Ukraine to oppose unauthorized entry of Russian convoy in Donbas Ukraine is making diplomatic efforts to prevent the Russian humanitarian convoy from entering Donbas without inspection by international observers and Red Cross, National Security and Defense Council spokesman Andry Lysenko said Aug. 14. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian army in a strongly worded statement said it will prevent the convoy from entering Ukraine. We will consider it as an enemy attack if the Russians get into Ukraine by-passing Red Cross and international observers. If this happens, the army will treat the convoy as an enemy force and will use its power to...

Two British newspapers are reporting that a column of Russian military vehicles has crossed into Ukraine separately from a convoy of some 250 Russian trucks that Moscow says is carrying humanitarian aid. Correspondents for “The Guardian” and “The Telegraph” reported witnessing the military convoy crossing the border near the Ukrainian city of Donetsk after nightfall on August 14. The column of about 23 armored personnel carriers was supported by logistics vehicles and used a dirt road to cross the border through a gap in a barbed-wire fence, “The Guardian” reported. The crossing occurred around 10 p.m. local time, "The Telegraph"...

... Across the country over the next year, federal agencies expect to manage about 60,000 minors who entered or will arrive in the United States without an adult guardian. That figure compares with about 7,500 who came in annually before the numbers surged to 13,625 last year and about 25,000 in the current year. Many unaccompanied minors land in Southern California; here they can be cared for by relatives who are part of well-established expatriate communities from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras — the impoverished and sometimes violent countries from which most have journeyed. Services for these students could be...

APPLETON, WI - Leaders in the Appleton area say they cannot find room for unaccompanied children who've been crossing into the U.S. at the Mexican border. The federal government was hoping to locate up to 400 children in the Fox Valley, as they escape violence in El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala. However, the Appleton Post-Crescent says Outagamie County officials are concerned about funding and education for the youngsters. The U.S. Health and Human Services Department said federal money would pay for the shelter itself. The agency has been looking around the country for large shelter facilities within 100 miles of...

... What is the immigration debate mainly about – Those who want to come legally, or those who have already come illegally? This “comprehensive immigration reform,” does it focus on those who want to come legally and respect us and our laws, or does it focus on those who have shown no respect for either and broken those laws? In both cases, it is those who have broken the law that are the focus of our conversations and legislation. The irony of writing and passing laws for those who don’t follow them is apparently lost, much like it is on...

Sens. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) and Juan McCain (R-Ariz.) blasted the Obama administration on Tuesday for releasing more than 600 immigrants living in the U.S. illegally, who have criminal records. “It is baffling how an agency charged with homeland security and immigration enforcement would knowingly release hundreds of illegals with criminal histories,” Coburn said on Tuesday. “In this single action, ICE undermined its own credibility, the rule of law, and the safety of Americans and local law enforcement.” The senators cited a new report from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) inspector general, which revealed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)...

BOERNE — Kendall County on Monday joined a growing number of local governments in Texas demanding more federal action to stop the arrival of undocumented immigrant children to the state and expressing concern about costs and potential health threats to localities that absorb them. Commissioner Gene Miertschin reported receiving numerous emails from resolution critics who decried it as mean-spirited, but he noted with surprise that no dissent was heard at the commissioners court meeting. In any event, he said, “The probability of any of these (immigrant) folks coming to our county is extremely low.” Some in the standing-room-only crowd didn't...

DONETSK, Ukraine - A humanitarian convoy accompanied by Russian military personnel and military vehicles advanced toward the Ukrainian border with the intention of crossing into the country late on Aug. 8, but it stopped short of the frontier, a senior Ukrainian official has said. He did not say where the convoy had planned to enter the Ukrainian territory. “Russia tried to make a serious...

KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. (AP) -- The cheerful sign outside Jane Cornell's summer school classroom in Pennsylvania's wealthiest county says "Welcome" and "Bienvenidos" in polished handwriting. Inside, giggling grade-schoolers who mostly come from homes where Spanish is the primary language worked on storytelling with a tale about a crocodile going to the dentist. The children and their classroom at the Mary D. Lang Kindergarten Center, near both mushroom farms and the borough's bucolic red-brick downtown, are a subtle reminder of America's changing school demographics. For the first time ever, U.S. public schools are projected this fall to have more minority students...
