The father of John Walker Lindh, who has spent nearly seven years in federal prison for serving in an Afghan army, told a room full of law students at University of San Francisco on Wednesday his son has been used as a scapegoat for the faults of the U.S. government. Frank Lindh of Marin County spoke for the fourth consecutive year about how he believes U.S. troops in northern Afghanistan in 2001 illegitimately captured his son, known as an "American Taliban," for fighting as a Taliban soldier just after the Sept. 11 attacks. Frank Lindh said he believes his son...

The statement by an aide to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki calling his remarks in Der Spiegel "misinterpreted and mistranslated" followed a call to the prime minister's office from U.S. government officials in Iraq. Maliki had expressed support for a withdrawal plan similar to that of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama in an interview with Der Speigel. U.S. troops should leave Iraq "As soon as possible, as far as we're concerned," Maliki had said. "U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama talks about 16 months. That, we think, would be the right timeframe for a withdrawal, with the possibility of slight...

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki supports US presidential candidate Barack Obama's plan to withdraw US troops from Iraq within 16 months. When asked in and interview with SPIEGEL when he thinks US troops should leave Iraq, Maliki responded "as soon as possible, as far as we are concerned." He then continued: "US presidential candidate Barack Obama talks about 16 months. That, we think, would be the right timeframe for a withdrawal, with the possibility of slight changes." Maliki was careful to back away from outright support for Obama. "Of course, this is by no means an election endorsement. Who they...

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki told a German magazine that he supports Barack Obama’s plan to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq within 16 months of taking office. The apparent endorsement of a cornerstone of Obama’s foreign policy drew swift praise from the Obama camp. But the White House stressed that any timelines are contingent on “security gains” in the region. “U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama talks about 16 months. That, we think, would be the right timeframe for a withdrawal, with the possibility of slight changes,” al-Maliki told the magazine Der Spiegel. He said he wants U.S. troops to leave...

IT NEVER FAILS: Murphy's Law. When applying for jobs, the one place you do not want to call you back inevitably will. I encountered this annoying fact applying for jobs in Richmond, when I landed one at the local Subway. Of all the interesting, vibrant-looking places in my area that I could have worked, this was definitely my last choice. But the only other places I had wanted to work told me it would be a few weeks or months, and I had to have something ASAP so that I could pay the rent. At first glance, the job didn't...

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan said Friday he would be willing to comply with a rumored congressional subpoena to discuss the administration’s handling of pre-war intelligence, telling CNN’s Wolf Blitzer he’d be “glad to share my views” if asked to testify. Facing a firestorm over his book, McClellan also confirmed reports that he had apologized to Richard Clarke for questioning his honesty after the former counterterrorism official published his own book critical of the White House. “That was part of our talking points at the time. I didn’t even read the book,” McClellan admitted Friday....

TORONTO, Canada (The Catholic Register) – Quaker and Christian Peacemaker Teams leader Tom Fox was remembered by Christians and Muslims together at a Mass in a Baghdad Roman Catholic parish March 12, the Sunday after his body was found. *snip* "We observed the human-rights abuses of the American armed forces and the chaos that the people were living through. And this time, with the kidnapping and the ultimate death of Tom Fox, I started to realize that we had shifted from being observers to being actual participants, victims, whatever you like."

I just finished reading another amazing novel by Dean Koontz, "Cold Fire". The afterword ... is hilarious: "Then, as is often the case when life is good, someone said, 'Hey, let's make a movie!' and life got strange, dark, and scary. "By this I do not mean to imply - although I can't stop you from inferring - that a lot of movie-industry executives are as brainless, voracious, and destructive as the flesh-eating bacteria ... I've met smart, fair, creative executives over the years...although I've noticed their kind either eventually get fired," (NOTE TO SELF: KELLY GOODE!!!) ... He goes...

NEW LONDON, Conn. A woman is suing the town whose police divers saved her from drowning. Barbara Connors is suing the town of Old Saybrook, Connecticut, saying she was rescued too late to prevent serious brain damage. The Massachusetts woman was in her son-in-law's sport utility vehicle when it jumped a curb, went through a chain-link fence and plunged into the Connecticut River. Connors was unconscious and in cardiac arrest when divers pulled her from the water. The son-in-law escaped the sinking vehicle and was picked up by the crew of a passing boat. Connors is also suing him. Among...

An opinion piece was published last month in the Spokane Falls Community College newspaper "The Communicator" which was titled "Engendering Dissent: No pity for the new American Heroes" by a person named Lily Morris. I am unable to find a copy of this column, and to avoid soiling my computer by having to email the publication and ask for a back copy, I was hoping someone out there might have copied it.

Husband gets kidney, then flees with lover By ANDY DOLAN 20mar05 Carol Jewell did not hesitate to give her husband, John, one of her kidneys when renal failure threatened his life. But four years later, he showed his "gratitude" by running away with her brother's wife, Marilyn Edmeades, 52. Their world had revolved around local politics. Mrs Jewell is Mayor of Woodley, west of London near Reading, and Mr Jewell, 53, was a member of the same council for 25 years. Mrs Edmeades also was prominent in local politics as a councillor in nearby Bracknell. The Jewells and Mrs Edmeades...

When Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania launched his campaign for the 1996 Republican presidential nomination, he nattered on about his support for abortion rights. Lurking somewhere in the recesses of his mind was the notion voters would gravitate to a pro-choice Republican in much the same way they had flocked to "New Democrat" Bill Clinton in 1992. Well, then-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani already had staked out the pro-choice-Republican territory. He won bipartisan support because voters liked the way he ran the city and correctly perceived his position on abortion to be irrelevant. So no one paid much attention to...

PATRAS, Greece -- Iraqi midfielder Salih Sadir scored a goal here on Wednesday night, setting off a rousing celebration among the 1,500 Iraqi soccer supporters at Pampeloponnisiako Stadium. Though Iraq -- the surprise team of the Olympics -- would lose to Morocco 2-1, it hardly mattered as the Iraqis won Group D with a 2-1 record and now face Australia in the quarterfinals on Sunday. Afterward, Sadir had a message for U.S. president George W. Bush, who is using the Iraqi Olympic team in his latest re-election campaign advertisements. In those spots, the flags of Iraq and Afghanistan appear as...

MESSAGE TO FRANCE, GERMANY, & EVERY NATION SUPPORTING IRAQ & TERRORISM. Much of Western Europe, Russia, China and Canada has aligned with Iraq and with Islamic fundamentalism against Christians and Jews in America, against the Jews of Israel and Europe, against the Hindus of India, and against the Christians of Africa and the Far-east. Desiring to counter this support for our enemies by our putative "allies," I and fellow Americans do pledge: To buy no products made whole or in part in nations not standing with the U.S; To downgrade, boycott and completely eliminate any involvement with businesses based in...

VALPARAISO — Investment banker and Muslim activist Aly Kahn will try to add state senator to his list of titles. Kahn joins an increasingly crowded field of candidates who want to be appointed to replace Sen. Bill Alexa, D-Valparaiso, who will resign at the end of the month to be appointed to the bench in Porter County. “I think it is an uphill battle, but this is a country where you can do anything,” Kahn said. Alexa’s district is spread across parts of seven counties, including the southern portion of Porter County. It will be up to Democratic precinct committeemen...

After all George Bush has done for steel, the United Steelworkers of America yesterday returned the favor and endorsed Richard Gephardt for President. Call it more evidence, if any more were needed, that the Administration's decision to impose 30% tariffs on steel imports last year was a major economic and political blunder.

In the moments before America was attacked by terrorists on Sept. 11, 2001, Ben Cohen, the co-founder of Ben & Jerry's ice-cream kingdom, was begging for a real enemy of the U.S. to show up. In an ironic and hauntingly prophetic Internet column dated Sept. 4, 2001, Cohen posted an "enemy wanted" ad, hoping that a worthy adversary would soon make itself known to justify President Bush's defense budget: ENEMY WANTED. Serious enemy needed to justify Pentagon budget increase. Defense contractors desperate. Interested enemies send letter and photo or video (threatening, OK) to Enemy Search Committee, Priorities Campaign, 1350 Broadway,...
