Reporting from Indianapolis -- Danica Patrick's ability to market herself is without question. But can she win another race? Getting to the front won't be easy. The 1-2 starters, pole-sitter Helio Castroneves and Ryan Briscoe, drive for powerhouse Team Penske And the IndyCar Series' other leading team, Target Chip Ganassi Racing, has 2007 Indy 500 winner Dario Franchitti starting third and defending Indy 500 winner...

INDIANAPOLIS -- Tire troubles that plagued Sunday's Allstate 400 at the Brickyard left thousands of NASCAR fans steaming Sunday. The caution flag waved 11 times at the race -- many of them planned because of safety concerns brought about by excessive tire wear. Many fans trickled into the speedway Monday morning to renew tickets for next year's race, but some of them said they considered not coming back for another year. Jerry and Diane Stoll, Jeff Gordon fans, said memories from Sunday's race are bad, but that didn't deter them from getting tickets for next year. "I wasn't happy with...

Lexington, Ohio — Danica Patrick finished 12th in the Honda Indy 200 IRL race Sunday, a day after a confrontation with the other female driver in the race. Patrick felt Milka Duno cut her off and got in her way several times during Saturday's practice and approached her in the pit area. Video showed Duno twice throw a white towel in Patrick's face. Patrick was also shown repeatedly telling Duno, "I just want to talk to you about it!" only to have Duno repeatedly tell her to "go away". Eventually, Patrick walked away from the area. Patrick, who has previously...

Danica Patrick and Milka Duno are the Indy Racing League's resident hottie race car drivers. Danica Patrick is American and Milka Duno is Venezuelan. The two tangled during IndyCar practice for the Honda Indy 200. One of Danica Patrick's resolutions for this season was to be less of a whiner and more of a winner in and out of the race car. And despite winning a race this year, Danica is...

An official with Kansas City International Airport apparently has tried intimidation in an effort to eliminate discussion about the recently installed footbaths, after repeated denials they are intended for Muslims to perform their footwashing ritual before their prayers. "That's the way I perceived it," Kevin Peterson told WND in a telephone interview. Peterson said he shares his name with a union steward for the Air Traffic Controllers Union at Kansas City's airport, but he is not the same individual. He was sent an e-mail from airport spokesman Joe McBride, who assumed he was writing to the union steward. "The...

Besides being the most radical-looking shift knob on the planet, the Gaslock Indy Cater has an energy-saving function. It tells you the exact point to shift to save gas, and if you follow its timely shifting tips, you can end up spending 15% less on fuel. It's not going to give you astonishing mileage like that 200 mpg Velozzi hybrid we showed you yesterday, but still, 15% savings might come in handy. Its auto-dimming LEDs adjust to ambient light so they won't be too distracting, and the shifter also has a helpful numerical indicator that reminds you what gear you're...

Everybody thinks Indianapolis Colts coach and Super Bowl XLI champion Tony Dungy is a great guy. Including me. His calm, considerate approach to the violent game of football is a refreshing departure from the manic, brutal skill set of so many other coaches. Yet there is a part of Dungy's philosophy that troubles me -- and, I believe, many others -- and that is his insistence upon making proper coaching not just a matter of good heart but of religious zeal, even dogma. God, he said, was responsible for the Colts' 29-17 victory against the Bears. Indeed, in the relatively...

ALBUQUERQUE -- Right in the middle of today’s deadly carjacker pursuit, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department arrested two members of Albuquerque’s famous Unser racing family. Both Al Unser Sr. and Bobby Unser Sr. were booked into the Metro Detention Center this afternoon charged with failure to obey a police officer and resisting arrest. Both walked out of the jail about 3:30 p.m. The brothers, who have a combined seven checkered flags at the Indianapolis 500 and are huge names in the racing world, apparently thought their celebrity status meant they were above the law. NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A fellow IRL driver says Danica Patrick has what it takes to succeed if she switches to the paint-swapping world of NASCAR and she's plenty aggressive in open-wheel racing when it's ``the right time of the month.'' Ed Carpenter, who trails Patrick by four slots in the IRL IndyCar Series' points race, made the comment when asked how Patrick might handle NASCAR racing during a radio appearance to promote Saturday night's Firestone Indy 200. ``I think Danica's pretty aggressive in our cars,'' Carpenter said Wednesday on WGFX-FM in Nashville. ``I mean, you know especially if you...

I'm not much for vanities, so please forgive me this one. Why isn't ABC showing the Indy 500 in Hi Def? Did they have technical difficulties, or did someone at ABC sports decide it wasn't important enough? I personally couldn't care less who wins Indy, my style of racing starts this afternoon at 5pm, but I thought it would be cool to watch Indy in Hi Def. After listening to the media pundits imply that Indy is so much more sophisticated than NASCAR, you would think they would spend the money to broadcast it at the highest level possible. Almost...

Barcelona is a circuit that every Formula One team knows well as they complete thousands of kilometres there in testing throughout the season. The mix of high-speed corners, a very long straight and an abrasive track surface, makes the Circuit de Catalunya a uniquely ‘complete’ circuit. Finding the right set-up compromise is always a tricky business at the Spanish Grand Prix. World champion Fernando Alonso was the fastest race driver in Friday afternoon’s second practice session at the Circuit de Catalunya. In front of a huge home crowd, the Spaniard finished third in his Renault, behind Honda’s and Red Bull’s...

DRIVE 20 miles northwest of Sarajevo through the mountains of central Bosnia and you enter the broad Visoko valley, dissected by the meandering Bosna River. Beyond the river sits the town of Visoko, watched over by its minarets. And beyond Visoko rises an extraordinary triangular hill, 700ft (213m) high and looking for all the world like an ancient pyramid. Some say that is precisely what it is — a huge pyramid built perhaps 12,000 years ago by an unknown civilisation. And yesterday they set out to prove it. In the spring sunshine, watched by crowds of locals, journalists and the contestants...

Note: Click on any of the pictures in this report for a larger image. Over the 2005 Labor Day weekend we drove from Idaho to Bremerton, WA to visit my daughter and son-in-law (active duty US Navy) and our two grandsons. The highest honor given by Bush is a tour of his famous ranch. If you are not a head of state and a warlord, don't expect an invite. However, you can enjoy this virtual tour and see what only Tony Blair and his ilk have seen, or even use it as the basis of your own tourist expedition. It will be far more informative than the vague Time Magazine article (January 12, 2004) story about the ranch....

Canadian Forces officials are trying to figure out what caused a fighter jet to lose a piece of its wing during a flyby over Toronto on Sunday. The CF-18 jet was one of two participating in the kickoff to the Molson Indy auto race, flying over tens of thousands of spectators. Luckily, the metre-long piece splashed into Lake Ontario. Although the lake was dotted with boaters, no one was hurt. The part, identified as the nose door to a luggage pod under the wing, was recovered by the Toronto police marine unit. It appears the incident was caused by a...

Danica Patrick has surged onto the open-wheel racing world, but that might not be sitting well with the old-school boss of Formula One racing. Formula One is getting its most high-profile United States presence with the U.S. Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend, but Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone doesn't seem to be too crazy about Patrick joining her male competitors on the track, despite her recent Indy 500 success. "She did a good job, didn't she? Super. Didn't think she'd be able to make it like that," Ecclestone told a gathering of reporters about Patrick's Indy 500...

ABC Sports replaced veteran Indianapolis 500 announcer Paul Page, known as the Voice of the 500, with Todd Harris in an effort to boost buzz and ratings. The network described Harris, 39, as one of the "most respected young talents" in broadcasting. Page, a 28-year broadcast veteran, told his hometown Indianapolis Star he was "terribly disappointed" by ABC's move. "I love doing the Indy 500," said Page, 59, who will handle other sports duties for ABC and ESPN. "It's all I ever really wanted to do." It was the second time ABC pulled Page from the broadcast booth. Page joined...

Jeret Schroeder rockets the IndyCarTM two-seater through the gears exiting the empty pits at Nashville Superspeedway, gunning the machine all out. As a piggy back passenger along for the ride, my every instinct screams that there is no way the vehicle can possibly make it around the flat apron exit without hurtling toward an intimate and rude hello with the wall across from Turn One. And we aren’t even on the track yet. Last Thursday, preceding the weekend’s Firestone Indy 200, the visiting Indy Racing League and Nashville Superspeedway invited the media to climb into the cockpit of an IndyCar...
