American college prof develops cell-phone tool to help illegals cross borderIllegal aliens crossing the U.S.-Mexico border now have a cell phone tool to chart the best route, find food and locate people who will help them enter the country – courtesy of a professor at a state-funded university. Ricardo Dominguez, a University of California, San Diego tenured visual arts professor and activist, designed the Transborder Immigrant Tool, an application much like a global-positioning system used in cars, to help illegals find the best locations for food, water and groups to assist them as they sneak into America. Dominguez is also...

Maryland’s foreign-born population has grown by 34.6 percent while its native-born population has increased by 3.3 percent. .Public school enrollment of students who require special instruction in English has soared even more, rising by 93.5 percent from 2000 to 2008 while overall enrollment declined slightly. A pair of recently released documents on illegal aliens in Maryland discuss the effect the spending has had on the state treasury. Both agree the cash-strapped state is spending at least $448 million on children of undocumented aliens per year and more than $100 million on health care costs. The difference is in how one...

Gabriel Alfonso Gil-Tzun, 23, has been charged by police in Novato, Calif., with lewd and lascivious acts on a minor. He is also facing multiple charges, as he allegedly molested the 13-year-old girl on several occasions. Novato police Lt. Rich Hill said the arrest is the result of an investigation which began several months ago. According to Hill, Gil-Tzun met the girl through a friend and has engaged in intercourse with her at his house. Months ago, a warrant was issued for Gil-Tzun’s arrest. Last week, an off-duty officer noticed Gil-Tzun at a Terra Linda shopping mall. San Rafael police...

After months of lackluster response, US authorities have witnessed a sudden increase in demand for H-1B work visa, which is popular among Indian professionals, though the applications received so far are still over 6,000 short of the Congress-mandated cap of 65,000. Latest figures released by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) show an increase in the number of people applying for H-1B visas in the last two months. As a result of which, till November 27, the USCIS had received about 58,900 H-1B petitions. This is still over 6,000 short of the Congressionally-mandated cap of 65,000 H-1B visas in...

If President Barack Obama could snap his fingers and create 8 million new jobs, would you want him to do it? I would. And certainly the 15 million unemployed Americans would, as well. The good news is that the president can do just that --- implement a policy that opens up 8 million jobs. The bad news is that he won't. Four weeks ago, after the administration announced that the unemployment rate had hit 10.2 percent and 190,000 jobs were lost in October alone, 21 of my colleagues and I wrote to the president to recommend enforcing current immigration laws...

Sarah Palin made her position on illegal immigration known tonight in an radio interview with Rusty Humphries show. At the 11.00min mark in the interview Gov Palin states that we need to close the Southern border. She said that they are called illegal for a reason and if they can not follow the rules they do not need to be in this country.

Three Houston residents have been arrested and accused of transporting illegal immigrants after a pickup truck carrying the people plunged 40 feet from a roadway and injured them in Jim Wells County in South Texas. Patricio Rebollar Jr., 28, Herman Valdez, 29, and Nancy Martinez, 25, are charged in a criminal complaint with transporting undocumented immigrants, according to federal authorities. Of the 17 undocumented immigrants in the accident, five remain hospitalized with serious injuries and the others have been treated at hospitals and released into federal custody. Rebollar, who was allegedly driving the pickup, was hospitalized with unknown injuries.

When I linked to a USA Today story the other day about Americans elbowing illegals out of the way for day-labor jobs, under my headline of "And Yet, We Still Haven't Suspended Immigration," one reader replied, "Yah, because protectionism is clearly the answer for our economic woes." This betrayed a widespread misconception about immigration and trade, one that's important to keep in mind as the president unveils the political theater production called his "Jobs Summit." Restricting immigration is fundamentally different from restricting trade in two ways, one theoretical, one practical. First, people are not things — in addition to being...

The city of Denver may consider doing random checks on the immigration status of contract workers after a construction company was found to have used more than a dozen illegal immigrants to work on city projects. After being alerted by a constituent last summer, City Councilwoman Jeanne Faatz asked the auditor's office to check into Noraa Concrete Construction Corp. workers on a job in west Denver. The review found that 12 of the company's 25 employees on that project had invalid Social Security numbers. Auditor Dennis Gallagher's office found an additional 13 questionable Social Security numbers for Noraa employees on...

Paraguay named an undocumented U.S. immigrant to run its consulate in New York, discovering his illegal status only when the man returned home to get his diplomatic papers and was denied a U.S. visa. Paraguay's foreign ministry acknowledged Wednesday that it was a mistake to name Augusto Noguera as the consulate's "first official," but said President Fernando Lugo annulled the decision as soon as he was informed of the U.S. Embassy's visa denial. Vice Foreign Minister Manuel Maria Caceres told The Associated Press that the decision to name Noguera as a diplomat on Sept. 21 was made in good faith...

PHOENIX — The Arizona Supreme Court refused late Wednesday to block enactment of a new state law that requires public employees to report illegal immigrants. Without ruling on the merits of the law, the justices said that the League of Arizona Cities and Towns, which had asked that the law be struck down as illegal, had not shown that the issue merited being taken directly to the state's high court. Ken Strobeck, executive director of the league, said he was "shocked and disappointed"' that the justices did not see fit to weigh in on the question, at least at this...

Growing numbers of noncitizens, including legal immigrants, are held unnecessarily and transferred heedlessly in an expensive immigration detention system that denies many of them basic fairness, a bipartisan study group and a human rights organization concluded in reports released jointly on Wednesday. Confirmation of some of their critical conclusions came separately from the Homeland Security Department’s inspector general, in an investigation that found detainee transfers by Immigration and Customs Enforcement were so haphazard that some detainees arrived at a new detention center without having been served a notice of why they were being held, or despite a high probability of...

Bring up the topic of economic stimulus and job creation, and you won't hear much about immigration. If the topic does arise, it's usually because somebody believes foreigners are taking U.S. jobs. It's time to bring the immigration question squarely into the debate over jobs. A change to immigration policy could help create jobs and rev up economic growth. It's a change that wouldn't be hard to bring about. I'm talking about the establishment of a Startup Founders Visa program. The program would make it easier for those with great ideas and the desire to start a company to live...

Two Houston charities that require proof of citizenship or legal residency before registering families for holiday toy drives said Tuesday their intentions have been misunderstood. Executive Assistant Fire Chief Rick Flanagan said people won't be turned away from a Dec. 23 giveaway even if they can't provide proof of their immigration status. “They ask,” Flanagan said of the Outreach Program Inc., which distributes toys collected by the Houston Fire Department. “If (people) don't have identification, they still get in. I wouldn't have the program if they didn't.” And the Salvation Army, which asks for a Social Security number when registering...

Amendments Expected to Target Issue WASHINGTON, Dec. 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Assurances that the two health-care reform bills would not benefit illegal aliens are not accurate. A new report from the Center for Immigration Studies examines in detail the immigration-related provisions of both the House-passed HR 3962 and the bill now being debated in the Senate, HR 3590. The report concludes that the bills, in their current form, would indeed give illegal aliens access to taxpayer-funded health care well beyond emergency medical treatment. The report, "Immigration-Related Provisions of Senate and House Health Reform Bills," is authored by CIS Fellow James R....

MEXICO CITY — Gunmen burst in to a Starbucks coffee shop Tuesday and killed a former policeman who was a protected witness in a drug corruption case, the second death of a high-profile witness in Mexico in less than two weeks. Edgar Bayardo was gunned down in the upper middle-class Del Valle neighborhood of the capital, and a man with him was severely wounded, city prosecutor Jaime Slomianski Aguilar said. Another customer who apparently had nothing to do with Bayardo also was wounded. Shell casings — numbered by police at up to 23 — lay on the shop floor between...

WASHINGTON (November 2009) – The Center for Immigration Studies is releasing the third video in its series Border Basics by Janice Kephart, Three Years of Fraud in the U.S.: The Case of Manoj Kargudri. Following closely on the heels of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano’s announcement that she is looking forward to working with Congress on “comprehensive immigration reform,” Janice Kephart explores how the agency that would be responsible for carrying out an amnesty of 12 million illegal aliens still cannot ferret out fraud in a single simple employment petition even eight years after 9/11. Kephart examines the...

Hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants could receive health care coverage from their employers under the bills winding their way through Congress, despite President Obama's explicit pledge that illegal immigrants would not benefit. The House bill mandates, and the Senate bill strongly encourages, businesses to extend health care coverage to all employees. But the bills do not have exemptions to screen out illegal immigrants, who usually obtain jobs by using false identities and are indistinguishable from legal workers.

According to Janet Napolitano, the Obama administration will insist on a path to citizenship for illegal aliens when it pushes for comprehensive immigration "reform" in 2010. The legislation will grant illegal aliens amnesty from serious job-related felonies including document fraud, perjury on I-9 forms and even identity theft. It is quietly ensuring that illegal aliens who lose their jobs are allowed to remain here rather than being prosecuted/deported. In addition to ending virtually all arrests, prosecutions, and deportations resulting from workplace crimes, the administration has restricted state and local law enforcement's ability under the 287(g) program to help immigration authorites...

Being a new immigrant myself, it is irking to witness other new immigrants- complaining about living in America. Seriously, with such unhappiness, why not just pack up and leave? Learning from the History of America the early immigrants had their own obstacles to overcome and managed to idealize their own beliefs into the American way of living and their success inspired others to follow suits. However, the new Immigrants argued because the European origins of the early immigrants had no cultural barriers on the American landscape, which simplified their assimilation. These “complainers” whine because European culture has become standard for...

When Walter Carl Abbott Jr. posted comments last year on a Maryland government Web site saying he would "strangle" Gov. Martin O'Malley, he learned there's a difference. The 45-year-old Pikesville construction worker was found guilty of threatening a public official. He is serving two years' probation for his rant against the governor, whom Mr. Abbott blames for personal financial problems that stem from business competition from illegal immigrants. ... Out back, a homemade sign leaning against his partially finished garage says: "Deport Illegals - Imprison Bush! By Order of the American People!!!"

t began in 2007 with the sale of stolen cell phones and PlayStation 2 systems to a fencing operation in Detroit, one with alleged links to the extremist organization Hezbollah. Over two years, the ring bought more than 20,000 stolen phones, hundreds of video consoles, and counterfeit Nike shoes. The group's appetite grew. It began to order laptops and military gear destined for Beirut. It even paid for stolen BMWs to be shipped overseas. And for nearly two years, an undercover agent in Philadelphia kept selling the ring whatever it wanted, patiently laying the trap. On Saturday, the FBI said,...

If I ever get in a jam, I wouldn’t think of asking for any special consideration. Just treat me like an illegal alien. The illegal alien du jour is Angel Castaneda, also known as Enrique Colon, which is the name on his driver’s license. It’s called identity fraud, at least if you’re an American citizen. If you’re an illegal alien, it’s called, “Nothing to see here, folks. Move along.” First of all, Angel is no angel. He’s already been deported once, and guess what - he came back. As the old song goes, “Everything free in America.” And now in...

Per the WSJ (link), bolding added: (Lou Dobbs) is working to repair what a spokesman conceded is a glaring flaw: His reputation for antipathy toward Latino immigrants. In a little-noticed interview Friday, Mr. Dobbs told Spanish-language network Telemundo he now supports a plan to legalize millions of undocumented workers, a stance he long lambasted as an unfair "amnesty." Now, to help illustrate why Wallsten is being misleading, here's what Dobbs said (video here, bolding added): What I have said from the very beginning... which a lot of people have chosen to ignore: that we need a rational, effective, humane immigration...

Mickey Kaus alerts us to the latest Greenberg-Carville's Democracy Corps poll suggesting that 6% of likely voters might vote for Lou Dobbs in a Romney-Obama race in 2012. Even tossing a hypothetical Green party candidacy by Ralph Nader into the mix, their numbers raise the possibility that a Dobbs candidacy might well take a serious bite out of the Republican vote. As a third-party candidate, Dobbs does bear some resemblance to Ross Perot in 1992: he's focused on nationalism issues (trade, immigration) rather than moral issues; his style is secular rather than religious; he speaks in specifics that create the...

The current of the Rio Grande drags the pebbles and water through the tale of two cities. Those who reside on the U.S. side of El Paso count their blessings to be living in the second safest small city behind Honolulu; while a hop, skip and jump across the bridge sits Mexico’s most violent city of Juarez, where murder, chaos and drug cartels are commonplace. Juarez has become the new Nuevo Laredo of 2009 and is a throw back into the wild west, gun battles in the streets, unidentified bodies taken away by the dozen; yet one thing protects the...

U.S. Border Patrol agents have arrested 57 people discovered packed into a Pirtleville house they believe was used by smugglers to hide undocumented immigrants. Although one would not know it by reading immigration policy debates, money paid to middlemen, mostly Americans, plays a major role in the whole process. If one seeks to manage, or at least nudge, events in immigration it is useful to visualize the financial transactions involving the non-migratory actors in the field, the people and institutions that shape migration but do not migrate themselves. As I see it, there are seven groups of such players, three of whom are motivated by personal financial considerations, three of whom are not, and one in between, where the institutions gain funds when there...

A top adviser on Hispanic issues to John McCain’s presidential campaign said Sunday that a joint interview with McCain and Sarah Palin planned for Univision last fall had to be canceled because Palin was unprepared to discuss Latin America policy. “She did not feel comfortable speaking about issues regarding Hispanics and Latin America,” GOP consultant Ana Navarro told Univision anchor Jorge Ramos in an interview. “Those are not topics that come up frequently in Alaska. So she asked to cancel the interview and, unfortunately, you were already there.”

Rise in kidnappings prompts more who cross regularly to seek training Security training companies in Texas and elsewhere, bolstered by an alarming increase in kidnappings and violence in Mexico, are finding a new niche in clientele: Americans and Mexicans living, visiting and working across the border. “Mexico has been very good for business lately,” said Dan Johnson, who holds a senior position for consulting and training with ASI Group, a Houston-based private intelligence and global risk-management company. But all were also on immigration holds, which means they will not be allowed to post bail and leave...

The truth is out. Illegal immigrants commit crimes at a much higher rate than Americans and legal immigrants. A new Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) report nails it. It proves the lies and smashes the myths of the “noble” illegal immigrant who only wants to “do the jobs Americans won’t do.” Using Freedom of Information Act requests to access otherwise embargoed government data on immigrant crime, the CIS establishes the fact that illegals commit “relatively high rates of crime.” The phony “academics” that’ve made careers of lying about the destructive impact of illegal aliens on our society are proved wrong....
