President Obama told guests at the White House’s annual Iftar dinner tonight that “further escalation” in the Middle East “benefits no one, least of all the Israeli and the Palestinian people.” Faced with criticism from some Arab and Muslim activists who think he has been too friendly toward the Israeli side, Obama addressed the conflict near the end of his comments, which largely honored “the traditions of one of the world’s great faiths.” “For all of us, whatever our faiths, Ramadan is a reminder of just how much we share. The values of peace and charity, the importance of family...

We have released over a million images onto Flickr Commons for anyone to use, remix and repurpose. These images were taken from the pages of 17th, 18th and 19th century books digitised by Microsoft who then generously gifted the scanned images to us, allowing us to release them back into the Public Domain. The images themselves cover a startling mix of subjects: There are maps, geological diagrams, beautiful illustrations, comical satire, illuminated and decorative letters, colourful illustrations, landscapes, wall-paintings and so much more that even we are not aware of. Which brings me to the point of this release. We are looking...

The FBI has begun to send pictures and other data from the crime-scene investigation of the Boston Marathon bombing to law-enforcement agencies around the country, including an image of a shredded black backpack in which one of the devices may have been hidden. Reuters and the Associated Press managed to get copies of the unclassified bulletin and published a few of the images late in the evening, as did ABC: that the bomb inside the backpack was an “improvised explosive device (IED)” made out of a common pressure cooker. ABC News had previously reported that law enforcement recovered mangled parts...

New satellite images have shown the alarming speed at which Pakistan is constructing a weapons-grade nuclear reactor. The aerial images, taken on April 20, show the rapid building progress of the fourth reactor to produce plutonium in Pakistan's Khushab facility. The site was barren in 2009 and the facility 'costing billions' was undetectable by satellite just 17 months ago, but has since grown at an alarming rate. The facility in Khushab is the fastest growing nuclear program in the world, with the speed of the latest reactor's construction prompting concern from U.S. officials

A deadly volcano in Indonesia spewed another searing cloud of ash down its slopes today, sparking panic and chaos among thousands of villagers. The new blast came as rescuers hundreds of miles away finally were able to resume food deliveries and evacuate injured victims of a tsunami triggered by a 7.7-magnitude earthquake near a chain of remote islands off western Sumatra. The number of people killed in the twin catastrophes climbed to almost 500 on Sunday.Sirens blared, and people jumped into rivers trying to escape Mount Merapi's latest fury, while others sprinted down the mountain or

MINNEAPOLIS – Two Minnesota prosecutors say they won't file charges against a man who investigators say admitted posting anti-Muslim images in front of a mosque, a Somali-owned store and other spots. They say the cartoons are protected under the First Amendment. The posters put up last month in the St. Cloud area depicted images such as the Prophet Muhammad engaged in bestiality and an Islamic crescent with a swastika inside it. Some in the community say there should be legal consequences. But the chief prosecutors in both counties where the cartoons were found said they must be considered free speech.

Close inspection of the image "properties" of photos of Obama included in the whitehouse.gov website reveal the word "hero" in their file path names. "Right click" the above photo, scroll to properties, drag the popup window corner right and view the file path names.. The word "hero" is fundamental to the file path. (example of filename path: www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/imagecache/home_hero_rotator_main/hero_feature/hero_image/hero_greatwall_LJ-0160.jpg) Is this a bad case of EGO, or is the word "hero" some sort of file structure term I'm not aware of? Could it be possible Obama is the whitehouse.gov's webmaster? LOL

New Obama images creep into the public mind from sometimes unexpected sources. From Beijing comes Oba-Mao. The Anointed One, about whom American schoolchildren already chant ditties of praise, is being portrayed as The Great Helmsman, Chairman Mao himself. The only photos currently available are copyrighted, but Oba-Mao merchandise can be seen here and here. Best of all this new meme was created not by some right wing version of Shepard Fairey, but by an entrepreneur in Beijing. According to jezebel.com, the creator is Liu Mingjie, who owns a shop in the tourist district of Beijing. Reportedly, t-shirts are selling particularly...

Most people have already seen the following images in the ‘WTF’ sections of social bookmarking sites, in threads dedicated to badass pictures or just circulated through their inboxes by the “funny” boss. There is never an explanation for these pictures, because they seem to intrinsically defy explanation; they are just still moments in time of unbelievable scope, and epic badassery. It seems hard to imagine what brought about the extraordinary circumstances these images depict, and that’s the magic, really - letting your imagination run with these ridiculous situations. Well, I decided to do some research on what the actual explanations...

Thursday (01.29.09) I traveled up I-55 through Arkansas and Missouri on the heels of a rather nasty winter storm. From just north of Blytheville, AR to a bit north of Charleston, MO the storm dropped an unbelievable amount of ice. The results were devastating. Thousands of people without power and significant damage to homes, trees and power lines. Being the shutterbug that I am, I grabbed my digital camera to get images for my blog. But the batteries were dead. And since no one had power and all the stores were closed, I could not get any batteries. So, I...
