Researchers Say Notification Laws Not Lowering ID Theft Over the past five years, 43 U.S. states have adopted data breach notification laws, but has all of this legislation actually cut down on identity theft? Not according to researchers at Carnegie Mellon University who have published a state-by-state analysis of data supplied by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC). "There doesn't seem to be any evidence that the laws actually reduce identity theft," said Sasha Romanosky, a Ph.D student at Carnegie Mellon who is one of the paper's authors. The importance of full disk encryption solutions for laptops and other digital media has been espoused a myriad of times by numerous security vendors like AlertBoot. WeÂ’ve all heard the stories regarding identity theft, and the importance of keeping Social Security Numbers safe. Then there are those unique stories that cause oneÂ’s jaws to slacken. Those unique, imaginative capers that remind me again and again why protecting data is no laughing matter. For example, SSNs could be used to build up your wealth two cents at a time. Prevention is not the only element of security,-- digital age, or otherwise when an attacker is successful the next aspect of security is Detection and Response In our world today of course our electronic banking records make a tempting target for attackers. naturally we take reasonable precautions to keep key information from being lost but in addition we monitor balances and transaction records. SAN JOSE, California (AP) -- Todd Davis has dared criminals for two years to try stealing his identity: Ads for his fraud-prevention company, LifeLock, even offer his Social Security number next to his smiling mug. Now, LifeLock customers in Maryland, New Jersey and West Virginia are suing Davis, claiming his service didn't work as promised and he knew it wouldn't, because the service had failed even him. Identity theft in America goes hand and hand with illegal immigration. As everyone knows, America is experiencing an epidemic of identity theft. In the last five years alone, complaints to the Federal Trade Commission from U.S. residents who have had their identity stolen have skyrocketed 60 percent, to 258,427 in 2007—one-third of all consumer fraud complaints that the commission receives. What’s less well understood, however, is how illegal immigration is helping to fuel this rash of crime. Seeking access to jobs, credit, and driver’s licenses, many undocumented aliens are using the personal data of real Americans on forged documents. The immigrants’...

The federal government moved on Pilgrim's Pride Corp. facilities in Mount Pleasant and in four other states on April 16, gathering some 400 employees on various identity theft charges. A year-long investigation produced the arrests. It also produced a vacuum of information among much of the Latin immigrant community that feeds Pilgrim's Mount Pleasant workforce of about 3,300 people. Last year, identity thieves wormed their way into Michael Carner’s Sprint account, tacked on 14 new cell phones and began ringing up phone charges. Even though he reported the intrusion, things only got worse. For nearly a year, the real estate agent was hit with late fees, frequent automated collections calls, service interruptions, and a $5,000 bill. Anxiety is rising among local undocumented immigrants who fear they could lose their cars and mobile homes. Some fears may be unfounded. It comes as Indiana's Bureau of Motor Vehicles checks its driver's license and state ID card records with a Social Security database. If the mismatches aren't resolved by Jan. 31, licenses and ID cards will be revoked. And since Nov. 7, the BMV has been checking Social Security records before issuing...

The Government has accused China of carrying out an internet spying campaign against vital parts of the economy, it has been reported. The head of the MI5 sent a letter to more than 300 senior executives at banks, accountants and legal firms earlier this week warning them of a web-based attack from Chinese state organisations. The letter warns that British firms doing business in China are being targeted by the Chinese army, which is using the internet to steal confidential information to benefit Chinese companies. It is believed to be the first time the Government has directly accused China of...

Alistair Darling was at the centre of a new storm over the loss of personal data last night as The Times learnt that six more CDs containing confidential information were missing in the Revenue & Customs internal post. The Revenue’s head office, which adjoins the Treasury, reported that the data was missing more than three weeks ago. It follows the Chancellor’s announcement this week that the details of 25 million people on two CDs were lost in the post because a junior official failed to follow security procedures. The new loss, however, will strengthen Tory claims that the fiasco is...

Ex-officer wants new start Awaiting sentencing, illegal immigrant plans for life in Mexico By BILL GLAUBER bglauber@journalsentinel.com Posted: Nov. 21, 2007 It was a name he put on like a new suit of clothes, a name that gave him a new identity, a chance to succeed as an illegal immigrant in America. But Oscar Ayala-Cornejo could never have imagined the long-term consequences of taking the name of his dead cousin, Jose Morales, and claiming his birth certificate, Social Security number, even a childhood immunization record. He was just a teenager when it happened in 1999, a kid taking direction from...

A San Antonio-based bank has refunded money and canceled debit cards that were used by identity thieves to make small political donations to the presidential campaign of U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, officials said Tuesday. Paul, R-Lake Jackson, and campaign staffers had no role in the scheme, and a Frost Bank official said customers received refunds for the unauthorized charges of $5 to the campaign. "It's unfortunate whenever it happens, but our campaign and Frost Bank took rapid action," said Jesse Benton, a Paul campaign spokesman. The campaign spotted something amiss when several hundred charges came in from similar Internet Protocol...

The unimaginable loss means information on senior politicians, police officers and leading industrialists will be included in the missing data, which contains records on nearly half the UK’s 60.5 million population. It is reported that MPs gasped as Mr Darling revealed the scale of the loss in an emergency statement to the Commons. Two computer discs holding the personal...

Today I was notified that our credit card had been frozen because of suspected identity theft. The companies only charged $1, $5, and $17. The companies were Islamic Relief Fund and CCB or China Construction Bank. We have cancelled the card and new ones are being issued. My question to you freepers is, isn't this some sort of terrorism? And why only the small amounts? I am mad that even $1 of my money could have went to support terrorism. Is this maybe a way that they fund their work, unsuspecting people in the US?

An economist testified in federal court today that the practice of hiring undocumented workers at eight Tyson Foods plants allowed the company to pay wages far below what other companies paid unskilled workers. The testimony came during a hearing in a class-action civil lawsuit in which workers at Tyson plants are seeking damages for depressed wages that could top $25 million, according to a report compiled by economist George Borjas. Tyson attorneys contend there are problems with the data and are seeking to have Dr. Borjas' testimony excluded from the trial, which is scheduled for March 3, 2008. Chief U.S....

A driver's license bureau employee who earned roughly $24,000 a year made thousands on the side illegally selling licenses to Brazilian immigrants, state authorities said. Cammie Gray Andres, 46, a driver's license bureau employee since 2000, illegally charged at least five undocumented Brazilians between $2,500 and $3,000 for driver's licenses, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Using bogus Social Security numbers, Andres falsely issued them under a program designed to exchange licenses for valid ones from U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. She faces multiple counts of unlawfully issuing driver's licenses, official misconduct and unlawful...
