It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity, they say. And according to one company with a distinct take on air-conditioning challenges, buildings can cut cooling costs substantially by dealing with the humidity separately. A central air-conditioning system made by Advantix Systems, formerly an Israeli company but now based in Miami, removes moisture from air and cools it with a mixture that is 60 percent water and 40 percent salt. Humid air is pumped past the salty mixture and water from the air tends to flow into the salt. If the salt is chilled, the air will be cooled, too. Finding...

Moorhead has set a new Minnesota record for mugginess. The State Climatology Office said the 88-degree dew-point temperature at Moorhead on July 19 is a state record. Minnesota's previous dew-point record was 86 degrees, set at Pipestone and St. James on July 23, 2005. Moorhead's 88-degree dew point was recorded from 7 to 9 p.m. The climatology office said that at the time, wind speeds were decreasing and air temperature rising, which suggests there were local influences helping to drive the dew point to "this extreme level."

HOUSTON, Aug 4 (Reuters) - Extreme heat and soaring power demand may force the Texas power grid operator to impose rolling outages on Thursday to prevent a wider blackout as residents struggle with a record-breaking heatwave. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas, ERCOT, warned there was a high risk of rolling outages as the state's power reserves were nearly wiped The state -- broiling under a relentless streak of 100-plus Fahrenheit temperatures and drought...straining power plants. I would trade a cow for these magic beans. Seriously. "Coffee Joulies" are a new invention that are stainless steel "beans" that keep your coffee at the perfect temperature for several hours. Hours. How do they work? Their Kickstarter page says: This material is designed to melt at 140 degrees Fahrenheit, and absorbs a lot of energy as it melts. This is how Joulies cool your coffee down three times faster than normal. Once it reaches this temperature, the special material begins to solidify again, releasing the energy it stored when it melted. This is how Joulies keep your coffee...

As newly minted princess Kate Middleton greeted Michelle Obama in the ornate surroundings of Buckingham Palace Tuesday, it was hard to believe she was wearing a $340 dress from British retailer Reiss — a frock any commoner could buy. (snip) While Michelle Obama has also been applauded for wearing clothes from affordable stores such as J.Crew and H&M, she also favors big-name designers such as Jason Wu and Isabel Toledo. The floral Barbara Tfank dress she wore to meet Middleton this week cost at least $2,000.

SYDNEY : Beware, Naga Viper. Your reign as the world's hottest chili pepper may be coming to a close. A group of Australians is seeking world record status for a new variety of chili, a bright red pepper so potent that processing it for eating requires gas masks and protective chemical warfare-like clothing. The "Trinidad Scorpion Butch T" chili, a mere 2.5 cm (1 inch) long, comes it at a fiery 1.46 million Scoville Heat Units (SHU) per chili, according to testing by Melbourne firm EML Chemical == taking it well past the Naga Viper British Chili, the current Guinness...

Despite doing an excellent job, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker should immediately resign. Readers of the Tygrrrr Express know that its unofficial motto is to never let principles get in the way of the author's personal desires. They also know that fake headlines are a great way to see how many imbecilic liberal bloggers will link to it without reading the column because they think everybody agrees with their wretched views. As a staunch supporter of Wisconsin Governor Walker, it is still time for him to step down. No, I have not lost my conservative mind. He is fabulous. It would...

OTTAWA - Are right wing politicians better looking than left wing politicians? That’s what a group of Finnish and Swedish researchers claim. The study, titled The Right Look: Conservative Politicians Look Better and Their Voters Reward It, had 2,513 non-Finnish respondents evaluate the facial appearance of 1,357 Finnish political candidates. The result, right wing candidates were deemed hotter. Female candidates on the right had a larger “beauty gap” over their left wing opponents than men did. The researchers argued that when the candidates were less well known, such as in municipal elections, looks play a bigger role in swaying voters....

No one has done more to promote this belief than Dr James Hansen, head of Nasa’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), responsible for one of the four main official global temperature records. On Tuesday's CBS Early Show, substitute co-host Russ Mitchell announced that "the lame duck session of Congress could hand President Obama yet another victory" with possible passage of the START nuclear arms treaty. Moments later, Mitchell declared that "The President seems to be on a hot streak." Mitchell got analysis from Republican strategist Dan Bartlett and Democratic strategist Jamal Simmons. Bartlett hardly offered an opposing viewpoint, as he completely agreed with Mitchell's assessment of Obama: "It's a great streak he's on. He's on a hot streak...

A New York couple have been charged with defrauding a wealthy musician to the tune of $20 million (£12.3 million) after he innocently visited their computer servicing company to have a virus removed from his laptop. The hard-to-believe story started started in 2004 when moneyed pianist Roger Davidson asked Mount Kisco computer store owners Vickram Bedi, 36, and his Icelandic girlfriend Helga Invarsdottir, 39, to rid his computer of a virus. On learning of Davidson's wealth, the pair are alleged to have concocted an elaborate social engineering scam that defrauded him of somewhere between the $6 million the police have...
