“I thought my last film was hard,” Zhao laughs, “but for a Chinese woman to try to wrangle a bunch of young cowboys?” Chinese filmmaker Chloé Zhao is making her second trip to the Cannes Film Festival’s Directors’ Fortnight this year, with sophomore feature The Rider. Born in Beijing, Zhao went to school in the UK and college in the U.S. before settling in Denver, basing her first two feature films on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Reservation. Zhao’s 2015 drama, Songs My Brothers Taught Me, was developed at the Sundance Institute and premiered in Park City that year. It centers...

Save HEREFORD — It was January 2010 when Horse’n Around Rescue Ranch and Foundation opened its doors on Single Star Ranch in Hereford. The nonprofit’s co-founders, Theresa Warrell and Steve Boice, opened the rescue after seeing a dire need to help neglected, abused and abandoned equines in southern Arizona. “At the time we started the rescue, we knew there was a need, but had no idea how great that need really was,” Warrell said. “To date, we have rescued 131 equines and adopted out 67.” On Sunday, Horse’n Around will be hosting an open house from 1 to 3 p.m....

Miami Beach city officials have revoked the business license for a nightclub after a woman brought a horse onto a crowded dance floor, Wednesday. Video posted on social media by Miami Beach Police Friday morning shows a scantily clad woman riding a white horse inside the Mokai Lounge, located at 235 23rd St. People were standing around before the horse became startled. The horse bucked, causing the woman to fall off. This was supposed to be the night’s entertainment, but speaking with reporters on Friday, Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber had a less flattering take on the spectacle. “Insane stupidity,”...

A bill has been proposed in the Wisconsin Legislature that aims to limit damage caused by horseshoes on freshly paved rural highways, the Leader-Telegram reports. State Rep. Kathy Bernier, R-Lake Hallie, is leading the push for the legislation after hearing local officials had considered creating their own laws, impacting area Amish populations. “I would rather do something that is consistent statewide,” Bernier told the Leader-Telegram The bill would allow counties or municipalities to adopt ordinances prohibiting studded horseshoes on roads where they’ll cause damage from April through October — the road construction season. Under her bill, the first offense would...

The American Veterinary Medicine Association is proposing removing the farrier exemption veterinary practice. It is unclear what this would mean but at worst, it would mean only a vet may shoe a horse, or a farrier may only do so under supervision or with a prescription from a vet. Clearly, this will add a cost to shoeing and may eliminate many shoers from the profession. It may require all farriers be certified. Given the predatory nature of some vets in my area, they will simply black ball certain shoers. Does anyone know from where the AVMA draws its power? They...

Hundreds of elite thoroughbred race horses sprinted away from flames Thursday as one of California’s major wildfires tore through a training center in San Diego County. Not all made it. There was no official count of how many animals were killed in the hazy confusion as both horses and humans evacuated, but trainers at San Luis Rey Downs estimated that at least a dozen had died, possibly far more.

Amid the charred landscape of Little Tujunga Canyon Road in Sylmar on Wednesday stood the remains of Rancho Padilla and the carcasses of nearly 30 horses who died in the fast-moving Creek fire. The Padilla family was there Wednesday morning, surveying the smoldering ranch that their father built more than 20 years ago. They somberly counted up the dead horses, whose charred bodies lined dozens of stalls. The family, who lives up the hill from the ranch, had awakened Tuesday to flames. One firetruck came and told them to leave. “All I could think about was the horses, the horses,...

Last week, my compadres and I traveled to El Reno, Oklahoma to participate in the National Cavalry Competition. The competition is hosted annually by the U.S. Cavalry Association and is attended by six different Army horse detachments as well as cavalry re-enactor organizations. The competition includes events in horsemanship, jumping, pistol, and saber designed to test the ability of cavalrymen to employ combat skills while riding a horse. For some reason, I chose to ride the Wonder Horse in this competition. We call him the Wonder Horse because it is a wonder he hasn’t killed anyone. It is hard to...

A prominent Black Lives Matter activist accused of punching a police horse will remain behind bars for at least two more days after being arrested on her way to court earlier this month. Shere Dore, 41, was a passenger in a car pulled over for an expired inspection sticker in her Fort Bend County neighborhood on July 6, her attorney said Tuesday. That led to her continued confinement without bail in Harris County. "I think they're trying to wear her down," attorney Jolanda Jones said. "I think her First Amendment rights are being criminalized." Dore was arrested July 6 for...

Like so many countries from the former Soviet bloc, Mongolia faced a terrible economic upheaval at the end of the Soviet Union. In the first few years, inflation went up over 250 percent; employment went down. And people started drinking much more heavily. "Alcoholism was devastating during the economic hardships of the '90s," writes Jargalsaikhan Mendee, a political scientist and former Mongolian defense attaché to the United States, in an email to Goats and Soda. The Dalai Lama says he made a difference. In an interview last Sunday with news comedian John Oliver, the Tibetan spiritual leader said, "I suggested...

California authorities are expected to head to flooded ranches in San Jose to rescue 28 horses that have been standing in water for two days. The horses have been trapped since Tuesday, when flooding prompted the evacuation of 14,000 San Jose residents. Police and animal control crews have been waiting for water to recede in order to safely pull the horses out. "Our agency has spoken with large animal veterinarians and large animal rescue agencies, who have advised us that it is best for the horses to shelter in place, due to the possibility of obstacles under the water that...

A devout woman, she credits her personal relationship with Jesus Christ for enabling her to keep competing. “The Lord keeps putting me together – I've broken every bone in my body, I have a titanium leg and I have a plate and screws in my arm,” she said. “I just follow the lead of the Lord and try to be obedient.” And, she added with a smile, “I don't want to retire, and I think I have the mount back on Blue (Haze of Fire).”

Eighteen years ago, on New Year's Eve, David Fisher visited an old farm in western Massachusetts, near the small town of Conway. No one was farming there at the time, and that's what had drawn Fisher to the place. He was scouting for farmland. "I remember walking out [to the fallow fields] at some point," Fisher recalls. "And in the moonlight – it was all snowy – it was like a blank canvas." On that blank canvas, Fisher's mind painted a picture of what could be there alongside the South River. He could see horses tilling the land – no...
