It doesn’t debut until next month, but the Fox sitcom “Dads” is already taking heat in early reviews for being crass, sexist and exploiting racial stereotypes. Actress and singer Bette Midler is quickly becoming one of Hollywood's most addle-minded personalities. On Twitter Wednesday, she actually wrote, "Do you find it odd that in America today, it’s easier to take a life than to get health insurance?" Let's look at the facts, shall we? In 2011, there were about 14,000 homicides in our nation. That year, 48.6 million Americans were uninsured. For years, advocates of the gay rights movement have said that their goal is to make the world a more tolerant place for homosexuals. They have just as adamantly claimed that they had no intention of educating young children in the complexities of human sexuality. Not so in Hollywood. Take, for example, the new animated film Boxtrolls, created by studio Laika. The film is a riff on the old Mrs. Doubtfire morality that suggests that all families are created equal, no matter what their composition. “Families come in all shapes and sizes,” the narrator of the preview says. “Even rectangles.”...

“The Lone Ranger” was gunned down over the Fourth of July weekend, bringing Disney a paltry $50 million against its estimated budget of $215 million, not to mention its $175 million marketing budget. Forecasters are now estimating the film will lose $150-200 million. That’s a lot of mouse food. But the studio might not be the only one whose bank balance suffers. Many industry insiders are now questioning whether its star Johnny Depp – front and center in “The Lone Ranger” marketing campaign – will be worth his $20 million plus per-movie salary going forward.
