  • ATF rules SB15 can legally be shouldered

Video- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNMLO18kl98 Recently a Colorado police officer contacted the BATF to inquire about the legality of firing a pistol from the shoulder when equipped with a Sig SB15 brace. It doesn’t come as a surprise to me that the ATF said it’s perfectly legal to shoulder the “not-a-stock” device when attached to a pistol. I knew it was legal to shoulder the SB15 when it first hit the market as I had researched it years ago when AR15 pistols became popular and people were shouldered the stumpy extension tubes and firing them as if they were really short stocked rifles....

  • Why Can’t I Find .22 LR Ammunition?!?!?

Even though Sierra BulletQuestionMarks does not make .22 LR ammo or projectiles, we are constantly asked “Why can’t I find any .22 LR ammo anywhere?” Even the conspiracy theorists are at a loss on this one as they can’t even blame it on the government. They toss around thoughts of warehouses full of .22 LR rotting away just to keep it out of their hands, but that does not seem very realistic – even to them. So what is going on here? Why is it that 1.5 years later, the shelves are still empty and bricks of .22 LR can...

What is this thing? It’s a homemade, custom sized, plywood lower receiver for an AR-15. No permits, no licenses, no serial numbers. No casting, no machining. Not even very much metal. Just precise measurements, very careful assembly, and lots of sanding. And some epoxy. Oh, and quality hardwood furniture grade plywood. And it’s going to work. As a pistol. Follow the progress over at Summer Patriot / Winter Soldier ... John Jay is also hard at work on another wildcat cartridge, this time a .375 shorty.

This post is of interest to ham radio operators, and also anyone who wishes to monitor NOAA weather radio, police, fire, EMS, aircraft, marine, and other radio traffic using a $15 receiver plugged into your laptop. The Chinese USB "dongles", originally intended to receive the Far East mobile television service, are being re-purposed as VHF/UHF receivers for many different modulation schemes and protocols.  The software to re-purpose them runs either on a PC (Win/Mac/Linux), or on a single-board computer like a Raspberry PI (Raspian Linux). At about US$15, Ol' Backwoods just had to have one. The RTL-SDR receives on...

  • Reid to refund campaign $16K for 'holiday gifts' [liquidate g-daughter's business inventory]

The Federal Election Committee (FEC) is asking Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to explain the listing of more than $16,000 in holiday gifts in a campaign filing, according to a report. Ralston Reports, run by Nevada journalist Jon Ralston, reported Tuesday that 2016 campaign money was used on presents for supporters. Ralston said he learned the gifts were actually purchased by Reid’s granddaughter, Ryan Elisabeth Reid, who sells jewelry in Berkeley, Calif. She bought the gifts — using the campaign’s money — for Reid’s donors and backers, the report says. The filing only identified her as Ryan Elisabeth, and Ralston said...

We awaited zero  hour.  All was prepared; it was go time.  Furtively, we glanced at the clock. 5... 4... 3... 2... 1... GO! Two of my co-workers, T. and S., and I went to the outdoor shooting range today, taking off as close to the exact tick of the end of our shift as my WWV-synchronized watch could determine. Our three pickup trucks raced along the interstate, exited, then caravanned over a few miles of dirt roads to our local public outdoor range. The  spring weather in Alabama was shirtsleeve-warm with a stunningly beautiful sky as we pulled up to...

No, not 2x Obama voters   talkin bout the real deal here...   Even though numerous savage tribes in the southern hemisphere have engaged in 'head hunting' and cannibalism well into the 20th Century -as in the case of Michael Rockefeller, who got lost in the wrong neighborhood in 1961- only a handful of sub-tribes of the Shuar people (Amazon basin in Ecuador/Peru) are known to have actually shrunken human heads.   And they continued this gruesome ritual up until the 1950s, where they got cranked-up on psychedelic tea, marched into battle with other tribes, scored a kill, chopped their head off, then made a little ornament out of it. Leftists...

Pistol and holster rig Author was wearing.  Clothes were as described in story I was out running this morning with my usual rig when I am exercising: a Glock 17 in a Fobus paddle holster.  After experimenting with a number of combinations, this is the one I usually use.  In the last 15 years I have worn out two of the holsters and am working on the third. I was headed south on the right hand sidewalk alongside a moderately busy four lane boulevard.  I was wearing a mostly white t-shirt with a nondescript design on it, and light...

New to trap shooting, need scatter-gun advice I have been shooting all my life, but have never owned a shotgun before. I've always used pistols and rifles, other than a few blasts from a friend's 12 gauge double barrel. Then last week another friend invited me to a day of trap shooting sponsored by his church. He loaned me his semi-automatic 12 gauge Winchester, which was a dream to shoot. I didn't realize what a difference it made to shoot an automatic vs a double-barrel. The auto-load spring action made it far more pleasurable for me to shoot than the...

Connecticut: The Coming Storm, posted on March 1, 2014 is officially the most-read article I’ve ever put before the public on this scruffy little blog. As one might imagine, it has provoked a great deal of controversy, here and everywhere it has been reblogged, and the number of blogs doing that seem to grow by the day, for which I am honored and grateful. For those of you visiting SMM for the first time, welcome, and I’m glad to have you. I hope my fevered scribblings are worth your time. The initial response has encouraged me to write this, the...

Hackers (or disgruntled insiders) claim to have released a 700+MB file of Mt. Gox operational information and transaction data, including one sheet claiming the exchange could still have a balance of over 951,116 BTC. One of the hackers managed to post the data on Gox CEO Mark Karpeles’ own blog, then announced the feat on Reddit. Karpeles’ site has since gone completely offline and Reddit moderators deleted the original post. At press time the mods were engaged in a cat and mouse game with other community members who re-posted the original quote and several links claiming to be mirrors of...

On February 27, 2014, Bearing Arms Editor Bob Owens wrote an article asking one of the more relevant questions extant: “Does the NYPD Have A Training Problem?” Bob’s article tells the story of two rookie NYPD officers who, pursuing a pair of fleeing criminals, fired a total of seven shots and entirely missed the criminal that had turned and fired at them. Unfortunately, the criminal’s marksmanship was far superior and he, firing three rounds, hit one of the officers with all three, once in each leg and once in the groin. The officer is recovering. The NYPD is not publicizing...
