The family dog of 13 years had to be put down. Her body was shutting down and nose cancer had taken its toll. She wouldn't eat and I had to carry her. I can't say enough good things about the local vets, C-Vets Emergency, and NC State K9 Oncology. They did so much for her and us during her time. RIP to the world's best GSD ever. Terra. CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A Chesterfield family recently opened their door to find a scene from a horror film. There was blood covering the walls and floors of their home. The family said there have been several break-ins recently in the Ashbrooke neighborhood where they live. The family came home Thursday night to find they too had been the victim of a break in. They say thanks to a family pet, the would-be robber got away with nothing. In fact, he was lucky to get away with his life. “We didn’t see anything wrong nothing at the front door,”...

    The Telegraph ^ | July 28, 2017 | Henry Bodkin
German Shepherds are living and dying in misery due to intensive breeding for “cosmetic” reasons, a major new report by the Royal Veterinary College has found. A survey of data collected from 430 clinics across the UK reveals arthritis, cancer, aggression and sloping backs are afflicting the breed at higher rates than others due to aggressive selection. Nearly one in two German Shepherds is being put down because they are unable to walk, experts said.

A row has broken out over a German Shepherd bitch who won best of breed at Crufts - after viewers accused the breeder of animal cruelty. Three-year-old Cruaghaire Catoria was judged to be the best example of her breed at the world-famous dog show on Saturday night. But the dog was said by some viewers to be 'deformed', with an abnormally sloped back and a painful-looking out-of-step gait.

Alex Dennison and Ashley Lewis should have listened to people. The Australian couple adopted their German Shepherd, Nasra, when she was eight weeks old. The pair were frequently stopped on the street by strangers who complimented the beautiful canine while telling them that, based on the size of her paws and head, she was going to be a big girl. Dennison and Lewis usually laughed off the warnings. They did, however, create a growth chart by photographing Nasra every month. In the series, the first image starts with Lewis comfortably cradling Nasra to the latest image where the dog is...

Cyber warfare has gone nuclear. So says Valerie Plame, the former covert CIA agent who spent her intelligence career working against the spread of weapons of mass destruction. Now she’s taking on a new task: helping government agencies and companies stem the relentless flood of hacker attacks. “There’s a huge impact on national security and intelligence,” says Plame, who this spring became an adviser to cybersecurity startup Global Data Sentinel. “The new normal is going to be more and more of these hacks, whether it’s Target or Home Depot or the Office of Personnel Management or Jennifer Lawrence’s nude photos.”...

My tenants, who live out back of my house just came running up and told me there is a serial killer on the loose in our neighborhood. He just torched a car not 500 yards from my home. My tenants are loading their weapons, they say that several local hunters are out looking for this guy. We are also prepared. Weapons at the ready, all external lights on and our GSD is out patrolling the property. Maybe a practice run for what is coming. I'll update on this thread if anything happens.
  • Colombia’s vice president has a great excuse for refusing office: His dog

Instantly putting himself in the running for political candor awards, Colombian Vice President Angelino Garzon eschewed the tired spend-more-time-with-my-family cliche and went with a much rarer reason for turning down a government job: His dog would get too hot. Garzon had been nominated to be Colombia’s ambassador to Brazil, but apparently the Amazon nation’s tropical climate would not suit his beloved German shepherd, Orion. In an interview with Colombia’s Semana magazine, Garzon said that he had a “very hairy” dog and that Brasilia’s weather might “harm him.” “This is not a dog of the vice-presidency of the republic, it’s a...

PASADENA (CBSLA.com) — Military dogs that have served alongside soldiers on the battlefield are getting a special tribute at the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year’s Day. The four-legged heroes will be honored through a festive, floral float titled “Canines with Courage”, which showcases the exact replica of the United States Military Working Dog Teams National Monument in Texas. “It’s just amazing to see that they’re actually going to have a monument to recognize their service and everything they’ve done and all the lives that they’ve saved,” said Gunnery Sgt. Chris Willingham of the U.S. Marine Corps. Lucca,...

St. Louis, MO - A few days ago, Police Officer Cheryl Goede responded to a call about a "suspicious vehicle". When Goede arrived, she found a man sitting in a vehicle along with his two, adult German shepherds. It took some prodding, but Officer Goede eventually found out the true reason behind that the man was in the car with the two, large dogs. Not long ago, the man lost his job. After losing his job, he lost his home. With nowhere to go, and nowhere for his companion dogs, the man took up "residence" in his vehicle - sadly,...

I just sent the following to someone involved with animal rescue, and wanted to share with Freepers. It's been a very hard day here : I found out last night my family has to move overseas in the next 5 days because of my husband's job. I have a highly intelligent, well trained, well behaved, 4 year old German Shepherd. If I can't find a foster or permanent home, he will have to be euthanized. I've worked with him extensively. He's obedient and knows many commands, but he's not been able to be socialized to other people or animals. From...

On Oct. 4, Jason Dubin drove to La Guardia Airport to pick up the newest member of his household. Six days after that first happy meeting, Mr. Dubin returned to La Guardia with that same member, a German shepherd named Emmi, and sent her on a Continental Airlines flight to Seattle with a one-way ticket. “I just couldn’t control her anymore; it was just time to part ways,” said Mr. Dubin, who made the drive from his Port Jefferson home on Long Island as Emmi, who is 5, fidgeted and barked in the back seat. Mr. Dubin had bought the...

Investigators are awaiting autopsy results to determine what caused the death of Hex the champion German Shepherd. Meanwhile, his family is continuing to raise money in hopes of finding his killer or killers. Al and Marcia Govednik found the body of their prized German Shepherd the morning of Saturday, October 8, 2011, nearly two weeks after they believe Hex was stolen from their front yard. "They just beat him and his collar was missing and they dropped him right there," said Marcia Govednik as she pointed to the ditch.

Roy Rutland was on his way back to police headquarters, westbound on Northwest 36th Street, when he saw an impact up ahead. He saw a flash of brake lights and an animal rolling on the street. Rutland, a Miami-Dade detective, pulled up to the spot impact Monday night and rolled down his window. "I saw this beautiful shepherd on the ground and yelping so loud in pain," he said. "Two otherdogs were there and they were barking, almost like they were asking for help."

Günther Bonke, a dog expert for the police in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), said on Monday the trusty German Shepherd, or Alsatian, was slowly being replaced by the Belgian Shepherd. The breed, also known as the Malinois, is considered more dependable and robust than its German rival. Bonke said NRW had only 26 German Shepherds still working alongside the police compared to 281 Malinois. He explained that not all German states bred their own dogs, making the often cheaper Belgian Shepherd even more attractive when bought in bulk. NRW, which borders Belgium, has been breeding the Malinois since...
