On the weekend of August 14, German diplomats routinely driving through Kabul’s diplomatic quarter noted an oddity. US soldiers who usually keep guard had abandoned the compound. The Germans also noticed that the road to the international airport, normally secured by American troops, was also undefended. They called around to Western colleagues and learned that the US had withdrawn the forces to their own embassy, according to German press reports. Only the next day did US diplomats inform their allies that they, too, should leave the so-called Green Zone and head to the airport, as the Americans were already doing....

An executive order signed quietly by Tennessee's Republican governor is troubling some Americans as it greenlights the National Guard and State Guard to implement quarantines and involuntary commitment of citizens "in connection with certain health care and emergency services operations," with the governor specifically concerned about "an increase in COVID-19 cases." Gov. Bill Lee signed Executive Order 83 on Friday "with little fanfare" according to Tennessee Stands, an influential conservative coalition. The group says it found some of the provisions in the executive order "exceptionally concerning," including: "Discretion to utilize National Guard and State Guard members in connection with certain...

What is the Shielding Approach1? The shielding approach aims to reduce the number of severe COVID-19 cases by limiting contact between individuals at higher risk of developing severe disease (“high-risk”) and the general population (“low-risk”). High-risk individuals would be temporarily relocated to safe or “green zones” established at the household, neighborhood, camp/sector or community level depending on the context and setting.1,2 They would have minimal contact with family members and other low-risk residents. Current evidence indicates that older adults and people of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions are at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19.3 In...

A heavily armed perimeter has now been set up around the entire DC federal center. Armed military and police with riot gear and 8 foot barbed wire fence now protect the Biden and democratically controlled branches of government from the free people of the United States of America. This is clearly not intended to guard against something that might have happened already, but something that may happen soon. What exactly is this administration and congress planning that will require this level of protection from our citizens? (Video)

The Secret Service has designated a “Green Zone” in central Washington as part of its security efforts ahead of President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, a move that sparked comparisons to the highly fortified swath of Baghdad that came to symbolize America’s struggles in Iraq. In a news release issued Thursday, the agency laid out road closures, public transportation disruptions and other restrictions affecting Washington, D.C., surrounding the Jan. 20 swearing-in ceremony. It identified a ‘Red Zone’ where during a six-day period only cars with special permits can enter, and a separate ‘Green Zone’ into which only permitted vehicles or residents or...

A rare daytime rocket attack hit Baghdad's Green Zone on Sunday, security sources said, as Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met top Iraqi officials. At least two rockets hit outside the US embassy in the high-security zone, the sources told AFP. Diplomats based in the neighborhood said they could hear sirens blaring for around an hour after the attack. The embassy's C-RAM rocket defense system was not triggered, possibly because the missiles' trajectory meant they would not strike within the compound. The heavily fortified Green Zone has come under repeated rocket attacks in recent months. In late January, three...

Qassem Soleimani inside Iraq, dramatically increasing regional tensions. The Iraqi resolution specifically calls for ending an agreement in which Washington sent troops to Iraq...

It was only a matter of time before ordinary Iraqis stormed the walled-in palaces of their corrupt politicians. hile the United States has been fixated on the Islamic State and the liberation of Mosul, the attention of ordinary Iraqis has been on the political unraveling of their own country. This culminated on Saturday when hundreds of protesters breached the U.S.-installed “Green Zone” at the heart of Baghdad for the first time and stormed the Iraqi parliament while Iraqi security forces stood back and watched. The demonstrators, supporters of radical Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, toppled blast walls, sat in the vacated...

Getting lucrative government contracts is easy – if you know the right people. And in the case of former ambassador Joe Wilson, husband of former CIA officer Valerie Plame, it was Hillary Clinton who greased the skids so that government contracts could go to business associates and friends. Is this really in the job description of the secretary of state? Daily Caller: Wilson’s requests for help — on behalf of an American engineering contractor he consulted for called Symbion Power — is a recurring theme in each monthly Clinton email dump. The latest two batches of records are no different....

In a bad sign for the future of security in Baghdad, ISIS forces are apparently close enough to the center of the Iraqi capital that they are firing mortars which are landing inside the heavily fortified Green Zone. Officials in Baghdad confirmed on Tuesday that two mortars landed within 500 meters of the United States embassy in the Green Zone. That portion of the city houses Iraqi government facilities as well as American and British diplomatic installations. ISIS militants on Twitter reportedly claimed credit for striking targets inside the Green Zone moments after the attack.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Blackwater security guard Matthew Murphy and now-indicted ex-colleague Paul Slough were friends, having survived the war in Iraq together, creating a bond that under different circumstances might have lasted a lifetime. But from the witness stand in the Blackwater criminal trial this week, Murphy testified that he saw Slough fire at least two grenades into a car where a woman and her son died, two of 14 Iraqis killed on Sept. 16, 2007, in a downtown Baghdad square. In three days of testimony, Murphy became the first Blackwater security guard to testify against his former associates...

Iraqi insurgents are preparing for an assault on Baghdad, with sleeper cells planted inside the capital to rise up at "Zero Hour" and aid fighters pushing in from the outskirts, according to senior Iraqi and U.S. security officials. Iraqis speak of a "Zero Hour" as the moment a previously-prepared attack plan would start to unfold. A high-level Iraqi security official estimated there were 1,500 sleeper cell members hibernating in western Baghdad and a further 1,000 in areas on the outskirts of the capital. He said their goal was to penetrate the U.S.-made "Green Zone" - a fortified enclave of government...
