RALEIGH -- In an odd political bedfellows moment, three North Carolina congressmen - two progressive Democrats and one religious-right Republican - joined forces Monday to urge the Obama administration to withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan. At an anti-war town hall meeting in the Legislative Building, Republican U.S. Rep. Walter Jones and Democratic U.S. Reps.David Price and Brad Miller sought to keep the pressure on the administration to end the American combat operations by the middle of 2013. "Our concern is that too many times, administrations will say that the date for coming home is a year from now, 18 months...

This past weekend, a former mayor had his business vandalized and another community leader got beat up in Center City Park. "One of the teenagers came up from behind and just punched me in the back and kicked me and knocked me to the floor. Then, he just continued to kick me, punch me, step on me. People were screaming," Mitchel Sommers, executive director of the Community Theatre of Greensboro said. The swarm came from nowhere and the beating lasted seconds. "Within a minute, I'd say, hundreds and hundreds and hundreds...I'm not being dramatic...hundreds of young people...just came descending upon...

Siddiqui, 31, answering questions in halting English, admitted he claimed to be a U.S. citizen when he filled out a voter registration form in Durham in August, though he is actually a Pakistani citizen. "Yes, I am," he said when U.S. District Judge James Beaty Jr., asked if ...

I don’t get angry very often. But I’m angry right now. On May 10th, I’m moving to Manitou Springs, Colorado, to teach all summer at Summit Ministries. I’m living in a cabin at the base of Pikes Peak, teaching a whopping two hours per week, and starting work on my third book. But, obviously, that’s not why I’m angry. I’m angry because I will be missing a very important event on May 22nd at UNC – Gomorrah, which was previously known as UNC- Greensboro, and is also sometimes referred to as UNC Gonorrhea. The UNCG Speech and Hearing Clinics –...

OK, so this is a total vanity, but I didn't see anything on FR about the Greensboro Tea Party today. Zot away, if I'm out of line, here. So, I was there. I'd guesstimate 2500-3000 people - the entire plaza in front of the courthouse was full, along with all of the staircases and balconies on the buildings surrounding the area. It was a really good turnout in my opinion. Parking was hard, Traffic was terrible - the worst I've ever seen in the city. I was hoping to hear from / talk to some of the local conservative candidates....

GREENSBORO — The City Council just got a lot more conservative — starting with the guy at the top. First-time mayoral candidate Bill Knight ousted incumbent Yvonne Johnson in Tuesday’s City Council election. The victory is the first by a challenger over an incumbent mayor since voters began electing the mayor at-large in 1973. Knight ran on a platform of fiscal conservatism and cleaning up the city’s police department. He will lead a council that, in the course of one election, now has a supermajority of registered Republicans. “The voters spoke to change,” Knight said. About 18 percent of the...

WASHINGTON – The brother-in-law of alleged terrorist co-conspirator Sami al-Arian attended engineering classes at the same college and time as the suspected mastermind behind the Sept. 11 terror plot, records at the North Carolina college show. The overlap raises questions about the extent of al-Arian's ties to terrorist groups. He and his brother-in-law, Mazen al-Najjar, have been accused by federal authorities of supporting Hamas, a Palestinian militia responsible for anti-Israeli suicide bombings, through an elaborate network of terrorist front groups and fund-raising arms. Mazen al-Najjar Al-Najjar, a Palestinian refugee, was arrested in 1997 and deported last year. Al-Arian, who also...

GREENSBORO - Most churches can only dream that their finances would be good enough that the congregation could dole out $1.7 million for needy causes. North Pointe Fellowship of Greensboro is the little church that could. Although attendance at the 100-year-old church Southern Baptist church has dwindled to only eight people, the church recently gave $1 million to Southern Baptists' Lottie Moon international missions offering. Another $700,000 was divided among six other projects or agencies that the tiny church thought needed financial help. Don Smith, 75, treasurer and lay leader of the church remnant, said that donations went to Samaritan's...
