This may be a repost but an important one.Alexandria, VA) – Even though President Bush took the oath of office last week, taxpayers still have one piece of unfinished business from the election: some federal lawmakers – including many seeking higher office – received thousands of dollars in salary overpayments for being away from their jobs during 2003 and 2004. According to a study released today by the 350,000-member National Taxpayers Union (NTU), an obscure federal statute still on the books requires Congressional absentees to forfeit their pay unless they or a family member are ill; but leaders have failed...

Thanks to a generous pension system, life after Congress can be a lot more lucrative: that's the conclusion of a study released today by the National Taxpayers Union Foundation (NTUF), a research group known for its detailed estimates on Congressional retirement benefits. A total of 38 former Senators and Representatives from the 108th Congress qualify for taxpayer-funded pensions, with former Senator Tom Daschle, D-S.D., leading the pack at a projected $5 million lifetime payout. "Even as most Americans face high taxes and other roadblocks to their own retirement, Members of Congress have paved a smooth path for their golden years,"...

Departing congressmen cash in for big bucks By MATT STEARNS Posted on Tue, Dec. 21, 2004 Knight Ridder Newspapers WASHINGTON - For many congressmen and senators, Congress is something like the Eagles' song "Hotel California": Members check out, but they never really leave. With the 108th Congress now passed into history, another Washington tradition is playing out this month as departing members of Congress, rather than returning home, trade their years of service for big paychecks from lobbying groups, investment banks and law firms. Rep. Dick Gephardt, D-Mo., is sifting among offers. Rep. Jack Quinn, R-N.Y., will join one of...

When we look at the constant assault on all that made America great -- a common language, personal liberty, the right to assemble with whom we wish, conventional marriage, the Boy Scouts, religion, etc. -- we need only look inward to those working among us. We can call them Democrats, liberals, the left, or progressives. The label is not important. By their acts, we know them as socialists and they have a plan to disassemble society as we know it. We have written about the infamous House Progressive Caucus[1] many times before. The Progressive Caucus is the Congressional arm of...

Election Day was two weeks ago and no presidential candidate in history had received as many votes as did George W. Bush. More than 59 million voters sent the Texan back to Washington for a second term. The finger-pointing and second-guessing for John Kerry's loss has been going around Democratic circles for 13 days now. Everyone and everything has been blamed for his defeat. While John Kerry's campaign may be faulted for committing costly errors, one must not look past the fact that Kerry was a weak candidate. His support hit a record low for the percentage of people who...

The Missouri 3rd Congressional District seat has been held by Richard Gephardt since I was in High School ~25 years ago. Now we have D-Russ Carnahan, son of the late Missouri Governor, and former US Senator, Mel and Jean Carnahan, a sitting state representative, running gainst R-Bill Federer. Bill has run against Gephardt before and lost. Has the Republican party given up on this seat? I see nothing more than the usual campaign signs and a few bumper stickers in the area. The campaign is sending out eMails at the rate of about 1 every 2 weeks by my estimation,...

...There seem to be three arguments by Sen. Kerry's advisers that have prompted this sorry situation for the Democrats: First, that the Bush trade policy is no better; second, that electoral strategy requires that Sen. Kerry act like a protectionist, while indicating subtly... a likelihood of freer trade in the White House; and third, at odds with the previous argument, that the U.S. does indeed have to turn trade policy around toward some sort of protectionism (and restraints on direct investment abroad) if it is going to assist workers and reward the unions. Each argument is flawed. - Mr. Bush...

...First, back in October 2002 when the polls showed large public support, Mr. Kerry voted for the war. "I think it was the right decision to disarm Saddam Hussein," he said in one of the early Democratic debates. "And when the President made the decision, I supported him, and I support the fact that we did disarm him." But then Howard Dean rose in the polls as the antiwar candidate, and Mr. Kerry suddenly turned against the war too. "Are you one of the anti-war candidates?" asked Chris Matthews back in January on MSNBC's "Hardball." Mr. Kerry: "I am --...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: RNC Press202-863-8614 WASHINGTON – Today, former Minority Leader Richard Gephardt (D-MO) announced a new Kerry campaign squad in Washington. “Each member of Senator Kerry’s Truth Squad should watch the Kerry Iraq Documentary and explain Senator Kerry’s position on the war in Iraq, I doubt they can. “I doubt they will release Senator Kerry’s complete attendance record of Senate Intelligence Committee hearings, of which Senator Kerry missed 38 of 49 public meetings. “In fact, I doubt that John Kerry’s Truth Squad will say anything about John Kerry’s 20-year Senate record including 350 votes for higher taxes, votes...

The outlook wasn't brilliant for the Democrats that day, The polls were down by two, with but one inning more to play. And after Gephardt died at first, and John Dean did the same, A pall-like silence fell upon the patrons of the game. A straggling few got up to go in deep despair. The rest clung to that hope which springs eternal in the human breast. They thought, "if only Kerry could but get a whack at that. We'd put up even money now, with Kerry at the bat." But Sharpton preceded Kerry, as did also Dennis K; and...

THE NEWS MEDIAMurdoch Is Said to Be Source of Post's Gephardt 'Exclusive'By JACQUES STEINBERG and DAVID CARRPublished: July 9, 2004 hen The New York Post tore up its front page on Monday night to trumpet an apparent exclusive that Representative Richard A. Gephardt would be Senator John Kerry's running mate, the newspaper based its decision on a very high-ranking source: Rupert Murdoch, the man who controls the company that owns The Post, an employee said yesterday. The Post employee demanded anonymity, saying senior editors had warned that those who discussed the Gephardt gaffe with other news organizations would lose...

When the NEW YORK POST tore up its front page on Monday night to trumpet an apparent exclusive that Rep. Dick Gephardt would be Sen. John Kerry's vice presidential running mate, the newspaper based its decision on a seemingly unimpeachable source: Rupert Murdoch, the man who controls the company that owns the POST! Rival NY TIMES set to source the "Murdoch" source to a NY POST employee, who demanded anonymity, saying senior editors had warned that those who discuss the Gephardt gaffe with other news organizations would lose their jobs. MORE Murdoch, the chairman and chief executive of News Corp.,...

The tabloid New York Post was wiping egg from its face yesterday after identifying the wrong man in a front-page "exclusive" on Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's choice of running mate. "Kerry's Choice" ran the banner headline in the Rupert Murdoch-owned newspaper, over a file photo of Kerry shaking hands with Congressman Richard Gephardt of Missouri. The accompanying story analysed the "stunning" choice of Gephardt, stressing how the 63-year-old had managed to beat out the strong challenge of the youthful Senator John Edwards of North Carolina. But Kerry announced yesterday morning that he had actually chosen Edwards for his vice...

John Kerry’s selection of North Carolina Senator John Edwards surprised me. Maybe it’s time to take a refresher course in political punditry. There were some candidates I was pretty certain Mr. Kerry would not choose. Senator Bob Graham of Florida, replete with his meticulously maintained notebooks about what he wore, ate and talked about every day, is just a little too strange. Iowa’s Governor Tom Vilsack was clearly out because until about a month ago no one other than his Mom knew who he was. I was sure Hillary Clinton wouldn’t be picked. John Kerry doesn’t want to spend the...

July 6, 2004 -- EXCLUSIVE John Kerry has chosen Rep. Richard Gephardt, the veteran congressman from Missouri, to be his running mate, The Post has learned. Gephardt, 63, a 28-year veteran of the House of Representatives, could be named by the presumptive Democratic nominee as the party's vice-presidential candidate as soon as today. The Massachusetts senator was set to announce the winner of the veep-stakes at a rally this morning in Pittsburgh, according to several reports last night. With the July 26 Democratic convention in Boston looming, Kerry is looking for some advantage in the polls, and is hoping his...

It's Gephardt Just got some scuttlebutt, top Gephardt aide Joyce Aboussie has been sent a private plane to join Dick Gephardt for....one can only assume the announcement that Dick Gephardt will be the next Vice President Nominee for the Democratic Party. UPDATE: If Aboussie is being flown out and ordering staff to be ready for a change, it's hard to imagine that it is anything, but gearing up for an announcement that he is the VP nominee. He and Aboussie are incredibly close and she is his right hand. Unless this is a bit of disinformation, this is the real...

Over the last few weeks, Sen. Kerry has had many more face-to-face meetings with potential picks than the press has reported. One such meeting, several well-informed sources say, took place last Thursday night. Kerry was in his home in Georgetown, and at around 10:30 pm, the last reporter staking him out -- someone from ABC News -- appeared to leave for the night. Our sources say that Kerry and his Secret Service agents then went the very short distance to the nearby home of former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Albright is a supporter of Kerry and has her office...
