The AOL-owned site Daily Finance this morning retracted a passage in an article that falsely stated Free Republic hosted child pornography. The article was about reporter John Cook leaving Yahoo News to return to Gawker. Included in Cook's reasons for leaving, according to Daily Finance reporter Jeff Bercovici, was that Yahoo would not allow him to write about Free Republic "hosting child pornography." The Salon.com article that was linked to support that claim actually stated that Free Republic did not host child pornography. The offending Daily Finance passage now reads:"... On similar grounds, he was prohibited from writing about the conservative website...
  • Gawker Tastelessly Gawks About Suicide of Fox News Employee

The lurid website Gawker.com recently posted a story about the suicide of a Fox News employee that was entirely empty of any real newsworthiness, but did serve as a platform to throw a dig at Fox News. In fact, it seems the only reason that Gawker posted the story at all is to attack Fox News. Exploiting this poor woman’s death and mental anguish just to get a dig at Fox News is over-the-top even for Gawker, but it is the culture our friends on the left have fostered in America today. Featuring a giant Fox News logo, the Gawker...

Yesterday, I made the mistake of answering the following email, addressed to Big Government editor Mike Flynn, promptly:Hi Mr. Flynn,I’m a reporter from the Business Insider working on a short item about the new Big Journalism site launched today. Usually it is easy ignore the commentary from that great bastion of cultural insight, known as the gossip Web site Gawker. But every now and then, even Gawker steps over the line. In a Sept. 11 post by Alex Pareene that was allegedly meant to reflect on the passing of eighth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Pareene launched into a hate-and-expletive-filled anti-President George W. Bush, anti-conservative and anti-Glenn Beck attack in his post. His first assault was on the prior administration. ...more...
  • Gawker Has Full Exit Polls (See Colemans Numbers To See How Off They Are)

Exit Polls! Exit Polls! Exit Polls! Sorry, Dianne Feinstein! Exit polls are useless and wrong (actually they're not entirely wrong and useless except that no one knows how to read them, except Marc Ambinder). But they're out, now, and soon they'll be everywhere. Let's get to it: "Senate sources" say the Dems will be stuck at 58 seats. Sad! After the jump, the numbers that people like Drudge have. There are no surprises but the slight Obama leads in MO and IN are probably LIES. (Or, uh, misleading.) GA 47-51 FL 52-49 IA 58-42 IN 52-48 MI 60-39 MN 56-39...

A memo today from Gawker Media honcho Nick Denton announces that he is laying of 19 of his 133 editorial positions and also suspending bonus payments, of which he forks over $50,000 a month. He notes also that advertising is up 30% over a year ago. He also confirms the hire of Gabriel Snyder to run Gawker.com, as we announced earlier this week. Gawker Media employees believe they will receive a "massive" pay cut without the bonuses—approximately 1/3rd of their current income. "There is no escaping the fact that we're losing some excellent colleagues and the environment next year will...

I've been searching for Gawkers advertisers? It looks like Gawker shows their advertisers on their own page. On their page they show their advertisers to be American Express, Chelsea Art Museum, Crunch, Hotflops, MINI, Mother on Fire, Sobieski, Starwood Hotels, Stolichnaya, T-Mobile, Unscrew America, and Sony VAIO. American Express, Chelsea Art Museum, Choke (Fox Searchlight), Cringe (Crown Publishing), Hotflops, How to Lose Friends and Alienate People (Paramount), Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency, MINI, New Kids on the Block, Sobieski, Starwood Hotels, Stolichnaya, T-Mobile, and Unscrew America. They're the best! You should advertise too!
  • Was Palin's e-mail hacked?

Gawker, a site best known for its catty observations about important subjects like celebrity clothing faux pas and stalker celebrity sightings, claims to have obtained screen shots from one of Sarah Palin's private Yahoo e-mail accounts. Now, of course, Gawker isn't the New York Times, so it's only reasonable to be skeptical, but there are reasons to think this report is legitimate. According to Gawker, numerous anonymous individuals managed to hack their way into one of Palin's private accounts, gov.palin@yahoo.com. This is a different e-mail than gov.sarah@yahoo.com, which Palin allegedly used to send work-related messages, including e-mails about her involvement...

Scroll for updates…Wired News confirms… Sometime early this morning, between approximately 3:00am - 4:00am, members of an infamous group of hackers broke into Gov. Sarah Palin’s private Yahoo e-mail account. The incriminating discussion threads included screenshots of Palin’s e-mail and private e-mail addresses of her contacts. The threads have since been deleted. Hacking e-mail is a federal crime. A TV anchor who broke into his colleague’s e-mail account recently pleaded guilty and faces a maximum five years in prison. The law will catch up to the hackers, but what about the lowlifes who are now gleefully splashing the alleged contents...

Per a contact with the DOJ, an investigation will begin into the group who hacked into Sarah Palin’s email and posted messages on the internet. Intercept of private email communication - even of a public figure - is a federal offense. Not only can the original hackers be charged, but all those who posted the messages as well. The website Gawker may be in further trouble for going beyond the email to post pics from the Palin’s personal message box, as well as other personal information that may be afoul of laws dealing with identity theft.

GamePolitics.com is reporting that United States District Judge Paul C. Huck has dismissed anti-video game crusader Jack Thompson's lawsuit against Gawker Media, the publisher of gaming blog Kotaku. Thompson had claimed that Kotaku and Gawker Media had failed to honor his requests to remove "threatening" comments from several of their blog posts that were critical of his eagerness to blame video games for the tragic Virginia Tech shootings earlier this month. On Wednesday, Thompson had added the blog publishing company, which also operates other popular blogs like Gizmodo, Wonkette, and Valleywag, to a list of defendants in a suit he...
