Transcript of Elder Dallin H. Oaks speech given at BYU-Idaho on 13 October 2009. My dear young friends, I am pleased to speak to this BYU-Idaho audience. I am conscious that I am also speaking to many in other places. In this time of the Internet, what we say in one place is instantly put before a wider audience, including many to whom we do not intend to speak. That complicates my task, so I ask your understanding as I speak to a very diverse audience. In choosing my subject I have relied on an old military maxim that when...

Sarah Palin's facebook page has been relatively quiet lately. She made it louder with a roughly 1000 word commentary on the Baucus bill. Most of the criticism echoed that of the Price Waterhouse report released earlier last week. The main criticism comes down to the idea that pre existing conditions will no longer stop someone from being covered but the penalties for not having coverage will be small. The bill prohibits insurance companies from refusing coverage to people with pre-existing conditions and from charging sick people higher premiums. [1] It attempts to offset the costs this will impose on insurance...

Ask the Norwegians who pick the Nobel Peace Prize recipient this question: “Which part of Europe are you from? The part whose butt we saved or the part whose butt we kicked?” They’d have to answer the former but only reluctantly because their answer would open a discussion about the ideology behind their bizarre choice of President Barack Obama as the 2009 prize winner. The Nobel committee has been widely and rightly ridiculed for that choice since the American president has yet to do anything to make the world a more peaceful place. They gave Obama the prize for making...

[Part 1 of this series.][The frustration of most Americans with the systematic destruction of their country, its society, and its economy, by a handful of corrupt politicians grows daily. It is not that they are not willing to do anything about it, but the fact they do not seem to know what to do. The growth of the tea-party movement and the huge march on Washington are evidence of their eagerness to do "something," but it is equally obvious that demonstrations and a millions articles have done nothing at all, and the leftist "Destroy America" railroad roars on without even...

Say it. "Freedom." The word itself has the power to move mountains and inspire greatness. Never before in the history of this great country has the danger of losing that power been more real than in today's world.

Will US Sovereignty make it until January 01, 2010? A question you seriously have to ask yourself given the full-court press to subvert the Constitution and deny the American people a voice. Congress had a *secret* meeting .. behind closed doors back on March 12, 2008. It was only the 4th in the nation's history not allowing anyone from the public or otherwise, to sit in on this private session. So alarmed were some Congressman by what they heard, a couple leaked the details of the meeting. The details were as follows: -- the imminent collapse of the U.S. economy...

Now that the Senate Finance Committee has approved its health care bill, it’s a good time to step back and take a look at the long term consequences should its provisions be enacted into law. The bill prohibits insurance companies from refusing coverage to people with pre-existing conditions and from charging sick people higher premiums. [1] It attempts to offset the costs this will impose on insurance companies by requiring everyone to purchase coverage, which in theory would expand the pool of paying policy holders. However, the maximum fine for those who refuse to purchase health insurance is $750. [2]...

Some things you may not know about Palin: What A Fisherman Says About Sarah Palin by Dewie Whetsell, Alaskan Fisherman As posted in comments on Greta Van Susteren’s article referencing the MoveOn.org ad about Sarah Palin. The last 45 of my 66 years I’ve spent in a commercial fishing town in Alaska. I understand Alaska politics but never understood national politics well until this last year. Here’s the breaking point: Neither side of the Palin controversy gets it. It’s not about persona, style, rhetoric, it’s about doing things. Even Palin supporters never mention the things that I’m about to mention...

Amid the chaos and turmoil that has accompanied the reign of the Obama Administration, there has been tendencies to lose focus on the important factors that have (and continue to) run the administration's game plan for pushing their initiatives forward. I believe this unique Obama Blitzkrieg strategy is worthy of observation and analysis - and by understanding it, we may also understand why it will ultimately lead to Obama's defeat.

We've got to work harder at getting information out, thanks state run media. A lot of people feel that conservatives are using "scare-tactics" in their efforts to gain more power and support. Yet, we've seen this done by both sides of the aisle for decades. There are certain things that we should be scared about because the fundamentals of our great nation have been compromised, whereas changes that have already occurred and changes that might be coming are eroding our freedoms, our spending power and our futures. Yes, we should be very concerned if not outright scared. I was scared when the Bush administration pushed through the Patriot Act. I was scared during...

Bank of America chief executive Kenneth Lewis has decided to forgo his total pay for 2009 -- giving in to pressure from the Obama administration's "pay czar" Kenneth Feinberg. Lewis announced recently that he was stepping down -- a victim of the continuing fall-out from BofA's Merrill Lynch purchase last year. Even though the takeover occurred as Merrill was going broke, its executives received millions in bonuses. While Bank of America received billions in federal TARP money, BofA shareholders ended up losing millions in stock value. Both federal regulators and New York's attorney general are probing the transaction. There needs...

On October 1, 2009, the Obama administration in conjunction with the Egyptian government, introduced an anti-free speech measure to the United Nation’s Human Rights Council (HRC). It was adopted the next day without a vote. Earlier this year, when the United States sought a seat on the HRC, it was a controversial decision. Many who found the HRC neither credible nor useful, opposed the move. Yet, others were more optimistic that America could change the HRC from within. Perhaps the U.S. could spur debate stemming from its opposition to China, Sudan, Libya, Cuba, and Saudi Arabia on critical human rights...

I have repeatedly written articles about the complete disregard for the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts's as well as the disregard for the United States Constitution by elected officials in this State. Today, however, Massachusetts goes above and beyond into what can only be viewed as a true case of Big Brother knocking down the doors of American citizens. Today, by a vote of 113-36, the Massachusetts's House voted to grant the State's Governor the ability to force residents into mandatory vaccination in the event the Governor feels so inclined. It also grants him the right to declare martial...

What's Glenn Beck Up To? Something Big, He Says Hey -- we like conspiracies too! Here's one, with some fact attached to it: conservative media icon Glenn Beck is planning something big -- very big -- for 2010. On his radio show yesterday, Beck alluded to a major nationwide mobilization project of some kind that he and some colleagues will soon announce. "If you think the 9/12 project was something...you ain't seen nothing yet," he said (roughly -- I didn't have a pen handy when he uttered this). Beck's 9/12 project brought tens of thousands of his ideological compatriots to...

I hate to see what is happening in this country. I believe this HERO bill, dedicated to the Minutemen, sums it up. Sometimes something comes along that just blows you away. This is one of those times. Just as we are now, there was another time when America was fighting the strong advances of communism. There were many Americans who thought communism was the way to go, just as there are now. Lots of folks have vilified Senator Joe McCarthy, who held hearings looking for communists in America. Many have said there were no communists. History proves that McCarthy was absolutely correct. This cartoon is from 1948, just as the Cold War was kicking into high gear. Just as we have now,...

Just a little follow-up to Ed’s post earlier, tracking the progress of The One’s global disarmament efforts. Hey — the committee did say that Nobel was aspirational. In an interview published today in Izvestia, Nikolai Patrushev, the secretary of the Kremlin’s security council, said the new doctrine offers “different options to allow the use of nuclear weapons, depending on a certain situation and intentions of a would-be enemy. In critical national security situations, one should also not exclude a preventive nuclear strike against the aggressor.” What’s more, Patrushev said, Russia is revising the rules for the employment of nukes to...

Wednesday, October 14, 2009 So Much for the Post-Racial America [Andy McCarthy] I'm hunkered down on some projects and just heard about the phony attacks on Rush by the race-hustlers extraordinaire, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. I know Rush has big shoulders and he'll handle it just fine. But everytime one of these stories comes up, which is all too often, I can't help but think it says a lot more about us than whoever happens to be in the cross-hairs. Why do Sharpton and Jackson have careers? Why aren't they shown the door for serial racism and dishonesty? Why does...

The younger generation probably doesn't realize that the word socialism means and connotes a system that is profoundly un-American. Socialism has virtually disappeared from our national lexicon since the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) collapsed because of Ronald Reagan's policies and the National Socialist (Nazi) Party was destroyed by the United States in World War II. The American Heritage Dictionary defines socialism as a system of social organization in which the means of producing and distributing goods are owned by a centralized government that plans and controls the economy. Both Webster and Random House identify socialism as a "Marxist...

I would like to extend warm birthday wishes to Margaret Thatcher today. Baroness Thatcher continues to remain a role model to many people, particularly women, around the world. Her career is a collection of "firsts." She was the youngest female Conservative Party member to stand for election in history, she was the first woman to hold the title Leader of the Opposition, and she was the first woman to become Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. As Prime Minister, she took an active role in defending economic freedom and democratic ideals. Her push to privatize British industry and lower tax...

It's not about Barack Obama. It's about the United States of America and its role in history and in the world. The unambiguous message of the Nobel Peace Prize Committee of the Storting, Norway's parliament, is candidly stated in the public announcement of...

What do Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand have in common? An odd assortment, to be sure, they share the fact that each of them has a greater degree of economic freedom than the United States. The Index of Economic Freedom is an annual analysis of world economies, now totaling 183 countries. It is a collaborative effort of The Heritage Foundation and The Wall Street Journal. The rankings are an average of 10 components analyzed during the last half of 2007 and the first half of 2008, on a 100-point scale, with 100 representing the highest degree of...

A major new report confirms the worst fears of many: Health care reform will raise the costs for most Americans—by about 18% on average. That is on top of existing inflation of health coverage. Once the plan is fully phased-in (by 2019), a typical family of four would pay an extra $4,000 each year. When combined with existing inflation, costs would rise from today’s $12,300 annual average to $25,900. Of that 111% increase, $9,600 is due to existing factors uncorrected by the legislation, and $4,000 due to additional costs created by the legislation. For single persons, the differential is projected...

Just when you thought things couldn't possibly get any worse (from The Times)... The Obama administration is considering outbidding the Taliban to persuade Afghan villagers to lay down arms as it struggles to find a new approach to a war that is fast losing public and congressional support. Didn't we send troops to Afghanistan to fight the Taliban? Now the Obama administration is wanting to legitimize yet another terrorist group: Apart from training more Afghan troops, the focus has shifted to accepting a political role for the Taliban, while also trying to weaken them by winning some over. Once again,...

Dozens Rally Against NJ School's Obama Song BURLINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBS) ― About 70 protesters let their voices be heard outside a school in New Jersey where students sang praise of President Barack Obama. Members of anti-tax Tea Party groups and others joined outside B. Bernice Young School in Burlington Township Monday to denounce what they believe was political indoctrination of students. The school houses children in kindergarten through second grade. The school began getting attention from conservative commentators last month after a video surfaced of a group of second-graders singing a song that praised Obama last school year. Protesters...

I've always believed in the existence of monsters. During my 20 years as a cop in NYC, I met quite a few of them, many of whom may still be doing time in prisons around the country. However, they were the garden-variety type of monsters; murderers, rapists, armed robbers and other assorted thugs. But there's another, even lower, level of criminal that exists in communities all across America, even in some of our churches. The creature I'm referring to is the pedophile. A few years ago, I received a 6-page letter in the mail from a woman in East Cambridge,...

This sounds safe... Obama's Safe Schools Czar Kevin Jennings wrote that killing someone who called you a name was not aberrant behavior. Oh really? Verum Serum discovered this article by Obama's Safe Schools Czar Kevin Jennings in 1998: We need to own up to the fact that our culture teaches boys that being “a man” is the most important thing in life, even if you have to kill someone to prove it. Killing someone who calls you a faggot is not aberrant behavior but merely the most extreme expression of a belief that is beaten (sometimes literally) into boys at...

Thousands of gays and lesbians claimed the streets of the nation's capital today in a demonstration demanding full equality under the law. The National Equality March snaked past the White House and streamed down Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol. Demonstrators chanted "Yes we can" in English and Spanish, resurrecting President Obama's campaign slogan, and waved signs and banners. Organizers said the LGBT community, which encompasses lesbians, gays, bisexual and transgendered people, are not satisfied with a piecemeal approach to gaining civil rights. They are seeking "full federal equality" and singling out issues pertaining to marriage, adoption, military service and the...

"It begins now, not months from now — with a road to 60 votes in the Senate." Graham's support is a major win for climate supporters, who...

SAN FRANCISCO – Marijuana advocates are gathering signatures to get as many as three pot-legalization measures on the ballot in 2010 in California, setting up what could be a groundbreaking clash with the federal government over U.S. drug policy. At least one poll shows voters would support lifting the pot prohibition, which would make the state of more than 38 million the first in the nation to legalize marijuana. Such action would also send the state into a headlong conflict with the U.S. government while raising questions about how federal law enforcement could enforce its drug laws in the face...

For those who haven’t followed it, there’s a battle shaping up over religious liberty at Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, N.C. At issue is the college’s ability to refuse to provide contraceptive coverage in its health insurance plan. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in Charlotte, N.C., ruled that Belmont Abbey discriminated against female employees by refusing to cover prescription contraceptives. “As a Roman Catholic institution, Belmont Abbey College is not able to and will not offer nor subsidize medical services that contradict the clear teaching of the Catholic Church,” said the college’s president, William Thierfelder, at the time. In March,...

Why gold could hit $1,500 on back of dollar’s decline: One view is that gold has become a currency of its own – one you can’t print more of The dollar's decline has paused and the record-setting ascent in the value of gold has slowed but now the political pressure is mounting on President Obama to reassure global investors that the US remains a sound financial bet. Republican politicians are looking to make political hay from the currency's slide, depicting it as proof of declining US power. Sarah Palin, the beauty queen turned vice-presidential candidate turned bestselling memoirist, is using...

Two days ago, British newspaper The Independent reported that a secret cabal of oil-producing Arab states, Russia, and China had conspired to dump the dollar for oil trading, a move which would have seriously weakened our currency and influence abroad. Many publications picked up on this report, written by the notoriously unreliable Robert Fisk, and a round of denials promptly appeared from the named states. Left unexplained by Fisk and the Independent was how these same states, with massive holdings in the dollar (especially China), would benefit in the short or long term by attacking it. However, it once again...

ACORN wants people to register to vote – as long as they’re Democrats. Republican registrations go into the trash. Here is a first-hand account of how it happens. ACORN paid her three dollars for each voter she registered, but Fatiyyah Muhammad says that the group threw out her votes and fired her when she brought them registrations of Republican voters. The British newspaper The Independent reported today that Gulf oil producers were negotiating with Russia, China, Japan and France to replace the dollar in pricing oil with a basket of currencies.[1] According to the Wall Street Journal, Arab oil officials have denied the story, but even the possibility of such a talk weakens the dollar and renews fears about its continued viability as an international reserve currency.[2] In fact, today a United Nations official called for a new global reserve currency to replace the dollar and end our “privilege” to run up huge deficits.[3] We can see the effect of...
