Attention all Freepers located in Southwest Virginia! I am interested in holding a regional convention to discuss how we as a group move forward with the issues that matter to all conservatives. Your input would be greatly appreciated.

FreePAC A question came from Jim Robinson on Saturday the 14th; "This may be a topic for our regional FReeper conventions coming up, but how many of you would be interested in forming an official conservative FReeper PAC for raising funds to help replace Dems and RINOs and to get conservatives elected?" Personally, I think a narrow. concentrated focus on identifying and supporting reliable conservative candidates could be a most positive addition to the elctoral landscape...and I think there can be no nobler and worthwhile goal than the extinction of the American RINO. Some of the responses, I left names...

Capitalism in crisis has Davos forum scaling back on glitz this year1 hour, 36 minutes ago By Bradley S. Klapper, The Associated Press GENEVA - No Bono, no Angelina. With capitalism in crisis, the 2,500 business and political leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland this week will find less star power than usual. Organizers say the five-day event that starts Wednesday will focus on work and on shaping the world after the crisis ends. **SNIP** Appropriately, perhaps, one session has been titled "Update 2009: The Return to State Power" and will assess governments now taking a stronger...

Anyone else experiencing weird things with FR or is it just my computer?

Please save this link as a favorite. I post it here today because there is a 100% packet loss in the Vienna, VA, area going on. Generally, traffic is slower today.

I was listening to Bill O'Reilly's Radio Factor this afternoon, when lovely Freeper Ann Coulter came on the air for her book promotion interview (Guilty, by Ann Coulter). I was listening to the back-and-forth between the two when Ann interjected a plug for the Free Republic. We Freepers "get it" when it comes to the political stuff her books deal with, insists our brilliant Annie. I didn't realize till much later that she kept injecting her point about Free Republic till she got it through O'Reilly's subtle avoidances. Coulter was sticking it in O'Reilly's eye for her fellow members of...

The Wall Street Journal recently reported an important effect of the 2008 presidential campaign: For the first time, traffic at left-leaning political Web sites overtook traffic at right-leaning competitors. The Drudge Report and Free Republic had the largest number of unique visitors in September 2007, but in September 2008, that honor went to the Huffington Post.

There's nothing worse than a long holiday weekend for falling behind on the news. What group of clumsy criminals are we bailing out now? And, gosh, will a zillion dollars be enough? You can lose track. Plus what's happening with Heidi and Spenser? That's why a website like Free Republic is indispensable. I know most people write it off as the tragic mutterings of a bunch of dandruff-addled, pit-sniffing shut-ins without the social skills to form a lynch mob. But that's an oversimplification. It's also a news aggregator. With one click not only do I get all the headlines I...

Need some help.... I want to add a new Block (a keyword Block) to my Manage Blocks page, but can't figure out how to do it. I've done it in the past -- I've had a "Keyword: banglist" Block for a long time -- but the layout of the Manage Blocks page appears to have changed since I last did this. Many thanks in advance.

Thanks to Jim for having the vision and follow though to create this site

Proposition 8: Governor Schwarzenegger Respect the Voter's Will If you are a California citizen, please act immediately to sign this petition to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger who is urging the California Supreme Court to overthrow the results of the recent free and fair election which passed Proposition 8, defining marriage as between a man and a woman. His actions as governor in attempting to negate this vote are an insult to the voters of California and undermine the rule of law. We will deliver this letter with your signatures to his office as a means of saying that the voices of...

A Democrat is poised to take the reins of power in Washington, D.C., and Fresno resident Jim Robinson is feeling a sense of deja vu. It was President Bill Clinton's 1992 election that sparked Robinson's political activism, driving him to create a Web site that made him a grass-roots leader among conservatives before Clinton's term was over. This year, as Barack Obama prepares to sweep into office on another tide of Democratic votes, Robinson and denizens of that Web site, freerepublic.com, are preparing to do battle again. "We'll double and redouble our efforts to fight for what is right," Robinson...

Revising and extending my remarks: We're receiving lots of complaints lately from freshly banned liberals, trolls and malcontents. Well, Free Republic has not changed and will not change. We are NOT "fair and balanced." Never will be. We are biased toward God, country, Life and Liberty. Marriage, family and traditional values. Constitution, inalienable rights, private property and limited government. Small government, small spending, small taxes. National security, national sovereignty, strong defense and secure borders. Individual rights, individual responsibility and self-government. Privacy, individual and family security, self-defense and right to keep and bear arms. Rights to freely exercise our religion, freedom...

I don't post often, can't remember my last and I certainly cannot remember my last vanity, so I guess I'm entitled to one every couple of years. It is not uncommon for a departing Freeper to post an Opus listing all their grievances with the forum. Today I want to post my anti-opus for lack of better term. Today marks my ten year anniversary on FreeRepublic. First off, I'd like to thank Jim Robinson and his crew for the fantastic job they've done with this forum and how it has changed and improved from the early AOL days. Yes, it...

Tensions and anxiety are high right now and everybody wants to purge. But as the mods are constantly pointing out there are way too many vanities clogging the system. Here is an easy rule of thumb to use when thinking of posting a vanity. A good vanity is one that informs, educates, amuses or otherwise delights the reader. By its nature it is positive as it contributes to the participants overall FR experience. A bad vanity is a vent or whose purpose is to get something off the chest of the poster and is by its nature, selfish, because only...

Post navigation troubles here. Unless, of course, this is a duplicate thread and the moderator can lock this thread with the proper pointer to the thread where we should all go to.

As reported on another thread: "Major Garrett reports from Hawaii 10 minutes ago that David Axelrod the Campaign Manager for Barack Obama says as of this morning the campaign had a meeting in Chicago and according to internal numbers they have "a clear road to victory holding all Kerry states while picking up Ohio, Florida, Colorado, Nevada and Virginia with an excellent shot at Montana, North Carolina, West Virginia, and Indiana." They are saying they will get to 400 EV's election night." And I just heard through the grapevine yesterday that McCain-Palin are needing grassroots support in battleground states like...

The Cape Fear Bar-B-Q and Chicken restaurant has seen a few prominent figures come through the door:Lt. Col. Oliver North. Gov. Mike Easley. Army Gen. Hugh Shelton. But none brought quite the attention of Sunday’s visitor, presidential candidate Barack Obama. He stopped by with his security, staff and media followers for some takeout before his rally at the Crown Coliseum. As a result, this down-home restaurant that seats 75 people went national in media coverage of Obama’s visit to Fayetteville.“My accountant called me this morning,” said June Massengill, the 41-year-old owner of the business. “He was on a trip to Rhode...

I found Free Republic in 1998. It was the Clinton era, and I was fired up about Bill perjuring himself. I was so passionate about the issue that I started my first website with GeoCities. After finding FR during a Jeeves search, I quickly began coming here for information the lamestream media wasn't providing. Then I found something more. I started out slow, visiting every now and again, lurking, reading what seemed at the time a TON of information on the Lewinsky scandal and everything Clinton. Before long, I found myself on FR for hours, constantly refreshing the latest post...

Yada, yada, yada. ~~snip~~ The growing power of rumor is part of a much larger transformation in the way that voters receive information about politics. The old model was a vertical one, where professional journalists delivered their reports to a largely passive audience through television or newspapers. The new model is horizontal, where folks get information from each other and actively pass it on, through e-mail, text messages and viral videos. Everyone is a potential broadcaster. This "democratization of information" has many benefits - more sources, more perspectives, more choices. In a forum Steve moderated for The International Journal of...

Every once in a while I see Freeper lingo I don't understand and have to research to figure out the meaning/background.

Today, I thought it would be helpful for newbies (and 'seasoned' Freepers) to have a 'reference' for the lingo specifically related to FR (ie not stuff like LOL etc you can get everywhere else).

It certainly seems as though the right wing of the blogosphere will be kept quite busy over the next three-and-a-half weeks -- so little time, and so many Obama scandals to investigate!Over at National Review Online's blog, The Corner, Mark Hemmingway suspects -- based on, um, nothing -- that Tony Rezko may be telling the feds about nefarious dealings with a bank where Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias once worked. And we care because? Because Giannoulias has connections to Barack Obama! Hemmingway concludes: "Maybe there's nothing there, but it's worth looking into right?" Um, right. At American Thinker, Jack Cashill has another bombshell: he...

Not talkin' financial crash. Something much worse...a crash of FR servers.

Sarah Palin and Bill O'Reilly have been maliciously hacked by democrat party operatives in the last few days. Free Republic has been acting wierdly for the past week, now with a major system failure today. Given the democrat party and the Obama campaign's ferocious hostility to free speech and the open expression of opinion, has FR suffered the same fate?

Well, the good news first. After installing three very sweet machines and new networking equipment, FR is geared up for the onslaught of traffic we anticipate during this election cycle. All that is left is some tuning and bringing online another database server.

Any ideas why the Views: stat is missing? I like the stat so I can see when a topic has had a lot of FR interest even if replies aren't high. I checked computers in 3 locations and none of them showed views. I did a search for "views" and find 1 posting from 3/05 about Views - it vanished before and may not be a universal problem. Also, tried clicking on "Activity" as someone there indicated and some threads have views and others don't.

Chicago radio station WGN-AM is again coming under attack from the presidential campaign of Sen. Barack Obama for offering airtime to a controversial author. I'd like to welcome the Obama media and supporters who are visiting FreeRepublic.com thanks to the publication by the Obama campaign of Unfit for Publication.FreeRepublic.com is the most popular conservative news analysis and activism site on the web. It is the third most popular political website overall according to Hitwise.com. Not bad considering FreeRepublic.com has no advertising budget, relies solely on donations and is not promoted in the media like the two more popular sites on Hitwise: Huffington Post and Politico.FreeRepublic.com has been around for twelve years and, along with the Drudge Report, has helped revolutionize politics on the Internet.Over...

As you know, I call Washington, DC everyday (every weekday) and I even started to do a radio show each Friday to share with folks the responses that I get. This week I called Senator Obama's office about the Global Poverty Act, and all 23 of the cosponsors- some of them 2 and 3 times. Well, on Thursday, my focus changed. On Wednesday, the House of Representatives held a vote on weather or not they would stay and debate the energy issue, or go on their scheduled vacations. In this vote, 17 Democrats sided with ALL the Republicans and voted...

A protest planned by MoveOn.org against the ongoing House GOP floor protest became a surreal scene Tuesday when right-wing activists showed up outside the Capitol to protest the protest protest. The conservative activists, numbering about 20 and affiliated with Free Republic, stood behind the MoveOn speakers waving signs along the lines of “Pump Rage? Thank MoveOn” and “It’s the Supply, Stupid.” The MoveOn crowd countered with their own pithy “Drill and Spill, or Surf and Swim?” and “Just Say No to False Solutions.” The FReepers chanted “Drill! Drill! Drill!” as MoveOn’s Ilyse Hogue tried to speak into a bull horn....

Several newspapers and The Associated Press have settled a copyright infringement lawsuit against the operator of a collection of Web sites, the news organizations announced Friday. The Police News Publishing Co., Breck Porter and six affiliated Web sites had been accused of accessing the news content of the organizations without their authorization and posting it on the Web sites, where advertising appears. The content was then archived; the archiving, publication, distribution and display of the content all violated the news organizations' copyright, according to the suit. Porter, of Galveston, was the editor of the various Web sites. In addition to...

The Washington Post published a June 28th piece geared to protect Barack Obama from the nagging rumors that he is a secret Muslim, rumors that have been circulating since 2004. The Post's Matthew Mosk penned an attack on Free Republic, based on an Obama flak who claims she has somehow discovered that Freepers are to blame, if not initially responsible, for floating the Barack-is-a-Muslim chain email that so many millions of Americans have found in their email boxes over the last four years. But, the Washington Post's article is so filled with assumptions and a singular desire not to...

McCain Gambles with Awkward Joke June 27, 2008 7:38 AM In an interview with the Las Vegas Sun, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., was asked by columnist Jon Ralston why he didn't choose Gov. Jim Gibbons to chair his Nevada campaign. "I appreciate his support," McCain said. "As you know, the lieutenant governor is our chairman." Why snub the governor? Ralston asked. "I didn’t mean to snub him,. I've known the lieutenant governor for 15 years and we've been good friends," McCain said. "I didn't intend to snub him. There are other states where the governor is not the chairman." Maybe...
