WASHINGTON, June 13, 2006 – While military servicemembers await deployment, some will find inspiration in their mailbox, courtesy of "Project Prayer Flag," a grassroots group that sends servicemembers pocket flags and letters of prayer and encouragement. 4th Infantry Division soldiers near Bayji, Iraq, hold pocket flags they received inside "Project Prayer Flag" kits. The display of the Mexican flag in recent immigration demonstrations is, to me and many of my fellow Americans, disturbing, annoying and unpatriotic. A short history fact: Mexico was soundly defeated, fair and square in open combat, by United States military forces in 1846-1848. Therefore, on former Mexican territories the Mexican flag comes down and the American flag goes up — period. It appears to me, and surely millions of my fellow Americans, that patriotism may be becoming a greater issue than immigration reform. —Frank Castillo Jr., Eagle Pass The immigration debate has sparked controversy about border security and illegal...

Shocking photos are now available that link Texas State House District 48 Republican Candidate Don Zimmerman to Senators Hillary Clinton and Ted Kennedy. Don Zimmerman's opponent, Jeff Fleece, has mailed out an attack ad claiming that "Don Zimmerman stood with liberal Democrats like Ted Kennedy and Hillary Clinton against President Bush". Now the truth can be revealed. On December 5th, 2003, Hillary Clinton came to Austin, Texas to promote her Living History book. We have uncovered evidence that Don Zimmerman was there to greet her as she arrived at BookPeople in downtown Austin. Only a week later on December 12th,...

Apache Junction High School students went through a Friday steeped in racial tension, confusion and ultimately, a partial reversal by an administrator who tried to calm things down. The day began with emotions high, a day after an incident in which Hispanic students raised a Mexican flag on a school flagpole only to see it taken down and burned by Anglo classmates. A shoving match ensued. On Friday, students wore Mexican and American flags to school as tension between Hispanics and Anglos reached a near-riot pitch, some said. The situation caused Superintendent Greg Wyman to create a new policy: No...

SOMETIMES EVEN MICHELLE MALKIN misses, in THE AMERICAN FLAG COMES SECOND, what's right in front of her eyes. It's understandable that with the disturbing images of misplaced loyalties represented by the much discussed "flag issue" of the last few days, that the real symbol of Mexican illegal immigration goes unremarked. Yet, in one of the pictures on Malkin's site, it's right there in the foreground. It's the Pinata. The pinata is a bright candy-and-toy-filled container (generally suspended on a rope from a tree branch or ceiling) that is used during celebrations. A succession of blindfolded, stick-wielding children try to break...

The "FRIENDSHIP (LAPEL) PIN" While commenting on another FR thread this past night/morning, I did a basic search for lapel pins that would show support when worn by us Americans for Denmark, and this is the most interesting result I found, the "Friendship Pin" from a U.S. company ("flagline.com")-- who also sells very well done American flags and many other interesting things. But, as to Denmark items, they offer the Danish flag on cloth, nylon and on dedicated lapel pins, too. I happen to really like this "Friendship Pin," however, and think it really makes the right message.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- Malaysian authorities suffered a setback Wednesday in their plan to send a 35-member team to drape Egypt's Great Pyramid at Giza with the flags of the world's 57 Muslim countries. The chairman of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, the body responsible for the Giza site, said in Cairo that he would not allow it to be draped. "This cannot take place," chairman Zahi Hawass said. "The pyramid cannot be draped by any person in this world. Nobody is allowed to do this." Hillary Clinton is co-sponsoring a bill to criminalize the burning of the American flag. Her supporters would characterize this as an attempt to find a middle way between those who believe that flag-burning is constitutionally protected free speech and those who want to ban it, even if it takes a constitutional amendment. Unfortunately, it looks to us more like a simple attempt to have it both ways. Senator Clinton says she opposes a constitutional amendment to outlaw flag-burning. In 1989, the Supreme Court ruled that flag-burning was protected by the First Amendment. But her bill, which is sponsored by Senator...

Raising the flag raises a flapNorway's military wanted to raise an historial version of the Norwegian flag during centennial celebrations in June. The Foreign Ministry, however, won't allow it, saying the flag used during Norway's unhappy union with Sweden, featuring Swedish colors, can no longer fly on any official Norwegian flag pole. The flag in question sports a mixture of Norwegian red-and-blue and Swedish blue-and-yellow colors in its top left corner. The insignia was commonly known as the sildesalat (herring salad), coined because the colors resembled a herring salad, common on the tables of both countries, which mixes the bluish herring...

Howard Dean and Yankee Democrats don't have a clue what it means to be a Southerner. It's not about Confederate flags. It's about honor, family, self reliance and American patriotism. Who are these Confederate voters that Vermonter Howard Dean wants to represent? Is Jefferson Davis on the ballot again? I thought he was dead, along with the Confederate States of America. Hey, I’m a Southerner, why didn’t I get the memo? Duh, Dean was just being "hisself", a Yankee liberal, describing voters as he sees people – divided by race, class and gender. What a hoot. Liberals imagine identity politics...

Yesterday I happened to be in a shopping area near White Rock Lake in Dallas and I noticed something a little different on a flag pole outside of a Post Office Branch office. Directly under the US Flag there was a black flag of the same size. Although at the moment I noticed it that was barely a breeze and both flags were moving, I recognized this black flag. At least I thought I did but, since I don't recall having seen one hung at a Post Office before, I wanted to make sure. So I stood and watch the...

In the September 20 issue of Time Magazine, author David Van Biema/Jackson writes very flippantly about a “Muslims Only” event held at Six Flags in New Jersey. He seems irritated that anyone would raise objections to religious segregation at a public amusement park. Before objections were raised, just how did the event’s organizers, the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), plan to enforce Muslim-only entrance to Six Flags? By the way people dressed? By their skin color? Would entrants to the park have been forced to recite verses of the Koran? Were Jews wearing yarmulkes and Christians wearing crucifixes to...

This past weekend marked the third-year anniversary of the day that changed America forever: the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. More than 3,000 people died on that horrible day at work in New York City and Washington, D.C., and in a field in rural Pennsylvania. Although unspeakably terrible, something good did come of the attacks. Almost all Americans, of all political stripes, banded together in a show of unity not seen in nearly 60 years. People stood in line for hours to donate blood. Money, time and love were generously given. There was more respect for the armed services...

As hard as it may be to believe, the 9/11 memorial placed on campus here at UT Tuesday night has been vandalized. Apparently, some cowardly and despicable individuals snuck onto the amphitheater Wednesday night and removed all 3,000 flags. They moved them to Humanities Plaza (about 100 yards away) and replanted them, spelling out "The World Suffers." They also chalked various antiwar and anti-Bush slogans on the buildings and on the pavement - in direct violation of University rules. Fortunately, we were on top of this by 8 am. We quickly washed away the libelous cliches, and returned the flags...

"This is a great day for UCF students," said Heather Smith, president of Rebuilding on a Conservative Kornerstone, or ROCK, a student-based group that has been working for months to have the flags placed in the school's classrooms. Smith said it is national emblem of freedom and liberty. However, critics of the plan said the American flags would be used to show political support for...

Attention Atlanta Area!!!Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield park grounds are covered by the 3000 flags (one for each victim of OBL's attack) .... It's an awe-inspiring spectacle well-worth your drive out west of Marietta. TAKE YOUR KIDS !!!! - They'll well remember it. A camera is essential to capture the scene of these flags covering the whole face of the park. From Atlanta: 75 north, to either 41, Barrett Pkwy, or the Kennesaw State Exit. Go west about two miles from I-75, signs are marked. The entire acreage in front of the vistor's center at the Mountain itself is covered.

Don't Commemorate Sept. 11 Fewer flags, please, and more grit. By Christopher Hitchens Posted Monday, September 8, 2003, at 9:30 AM PT Unless I have badly mistaken the mood of everyone I know and almost everyone I meet, practically nobody has any particular use for the second anniversary that will soon be upon us. But it is vaguely felt in many quarters that something ought to be done by way of an observance. The first mentality is in my opinion the right one, even if people feel bad about harboring it, and the second one is defensible but somewhat sickly...
  • Ave of Flags

Liberals are suing the village of Montour Falls to stop a project called the Ave of Flags at the SheQuaGa Falls Park. We realize their concern for visual effect, but a majority want the flags and have donated 225.00 each for poles and flags. Enemies of the project have twisted all the facts and made the project into a horror story. The are attempting to discredit a enviormental statement the parks dept required. They want the flags "stuffed into some other corner" in other words you can put your flags where we want them. Flags will have a brick at the...

Editorial Second Thoughts By: William W. Lawrence 08/05/2003 There is an important undertaking going on in Marple and Newtown Townships. The Marine Corps League, American Legion and VFW have joined the Marple Parks Department and USPS for a flag depository project which brings five mailboxes to the Marple and Newtown communities. The boxes sport handsome stars and stripes and the veterans' organization logos. They are marked "Flags Only" to discourage other items such as eyeglasses from being dropped in these special receptacles. I would like to see this enterprise take wings and spread through the rest of Delaware County. Old...

I'm just coming back from Normandy and still have to unpack, but I wanted to offer you a new game to play, particularly if you're in for a D-Day tour this summer. If you planned it, you may want to cancel your visit to the Musée Mémorial de la Bataille de Normandie (Memorial Museum of the Battle of Normandy) in Bayeux. Unless you would like to play this game, I told you about.

While Israel Radio reported that while the streets of Aqaba are decorated today with the flags of Jordan, U.S. and the PLO/PA, Jordan declined to put Israeli flags in the streets. Amir Weiss, the spokesman of the Israeli Embassy in Amman, took an upbeat tone in an interview on Israel Radio, noting that Israeli flags were inside the king's palace in Aqaba for the meeting. At 9:47 AM Israel Radio pointed out it is becoming embarrassing that the Jordanians have yet to permit the Israeli flag to be displayed at the press center.

Second Thoughts By William W. Lawrence 05/14/2003A snappy salute to former Marine Corps Sgt. Roger Gibbons who acquired 80 American flags to be flown in Upper Chichester. Gibbons, who owns and operates the Gibbons Insurance Agency in the township, was watching the war on television when the idea came to him. The Korean War vet decided his town did not look patriotic enough. He made a deal with Tom Ferro, president of the Upper Chi Board of Commissioners. Gibbons would get the flags if the township would put them up. Ferro, a friend of Gibbons, agreed. Beautiful American flags are...

Court fight rages over 'illegal' flag April 5, 2003 BY STEWART WARREN At the Wesmere subdivision in Joliet, a flag isn't always a flag. Sometimes it's "tasteful holiday trim." Or a banner. Sound confusing? It can be. Particularly for Donna Guinta. In fall 2001, Guinta, who lives in Wesmere, decided to hang an Air Force flag on the front of her garage. Moved by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, her son Jon Guinta had joined the Air Force. Guinta displayed the flag to honor his patriotism. But the Wesmere homeowners association has a set of rules governing the display of...
