  • France’s problem: up to half its prisoners are Muslim and the jails are a hotbed for radicalization

    National Post [Canada] ^ | Friday, January 9, 2015 | Graeme Hamilton
The 27-year-old man photographed in 2009 seemed to represent hope springing from Paris’s desperate suburbs. Part of a work-insertion program, he was about to meet then-French president Nicolas Sarkozy, who was trying to combat high youth unemployment.... The man was Amedy Coulibaly, who was killed Friday after seizing hostages in a Jewish supermarket in Paris, an attack he claimed was in support of the terrorist Islamic State of Iraq & Al-Sham. A close associate of Said and Chérif Kouachi, the two brothers who attacked the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo Wednesday, Coulibaly is a symbol of the huge challenges lying ahead...

"I am pleased the decision of the court today meant that these men, who used every available opportunity to frustrate and delay the extradition process over many years, could finally be removed. 'Radical Muslim cleric Abu Hamza can be extradited to the US after Europe's human rights judges rejected his request for an appeal, officials have said. Hamza wanted to fight a European Court of Human Rights ruling that extradition would not breach his human rights. But his request was rejected by a panel of judges, a spokesman for the court said. The unanimous judgment said there would be no human rights breach either as a result of likely detention in ADX Florence "supermax" prison in Colorado, or the length of possible sentences on conviction. The decision means Hamza, who was jailed...

American counter-terrorism chiefs are demanding a full explanation from Britain of how radical cleric Abu Hamza was able to smuggle murderous messages from his UK prison cell to Al Qaeda's deputy leader. The major diplomatic row comes in the wake of a long-running battle by US prosecutors to extradite the former imam of London's Finsbury Park mosque to stand trial in America. Hook-handed Hamza was jailed for seven years in Britain in 2006 for inciting murder and racial hatred and is held at Belmarsh prison, South-East London, supposedly one of Britain's most secure jails. Just an hour earlier, I had been awed by the grandeur of Big Ben, towering over the British Houses of Parliament. Although the eight suspects in London's two subway-bombings come from different backgrounds, investigators now believe that they share an important link: The notorious Finsbury Park Mosque in northwest London. Long a hotbed of militancy, the facility had become known as London's "Jihad Central" before it was shut down last year. And according to Newsday, it was frequented by at least three of the suspected bombers who were involved in both the July 7 and July 21 attacks. BLY, Ore. — This hard-knocks hamlet seems an unlikely place to search for clues to the al-Qaida terrorist network. It sits on an arid plateau in Southern Oregon, about 50 miles east of Klamath Falls. With a population of about 250, it has a couple of cafes and small stores, an antique shop, and the razed foundation of an abandoned lumber mill.
