It was the the party that Donald Trump was branded too uncool to be invited to be to – even at his own political convention. The most powerful Republican in the state, Governor John Kasich, threw the bash for a group he called 'friends': fellow party elder statesman, delegates, party workers and the future stars of the Grand Old Party. One senior Republican said there was an obvious reason why...

Since a 4-4 deadlock put an anticlimactic end to President Barack Obama's offer of deportation relief to certain undocumented immigrants, the U.S. government filed Monday for a rehearing when the Supreme Court gets a ninth judge. The filing comes nearly a month after the Supreme Court issued just one sentence on June 23 that put an end to one of the most closely watched cases in the nation. One vote short since the death of Justice Antonin Scalia in February, the partisan split by the Supreme Court failed to topple a lower court's injunction against Obama's Deferred Action for Parents...

I’m talking about we lay up under each other’s cars, lay behind each other’s houses then whip by, boom boom, kill everybody in the car…but as soon as a white boy kills one of us, everybody go to hoopin’ and...

Members of the Wichita, Kan., police department spent Sunday afternoon eating and talking with people from the community, at a cookout that was planned with the local Black Lives Matter group. The event was called the First Steps Community Cookout — a reference to its goal of bridging the gap between police and the community they serve. Taking place instead of a protest that had been planned for Sunday, the cookout came about after Wichita Police Chief Gordon Ramsay had a lengthy meeting with activist A.J. Bohannon and other members of the local Black Lives Matter movement. Bohannon told member...

Flame on. While the Olympic torch was being carried through the Brazilian city of Joinville on Thursday, a man attempted to put out the flame with a fire extinguisher. A runner ran through the streets with the torch when a spectator came out of nowhere and did his best to extinguish the flame. The man got one burst of the extinguisher off before he was swarmed by security. The attempt was, fortunately, a failure, but even in failure, a second attempt doesn't bode well for the remaining days of torch transit. We don't know the most recent attacker's motivations, but...

What’s more, Ted Eliopoulos, the pension fund’s chief investment officer, said the poor year has pushed CalPERS’ long-term returns below expected levels. “We have some challenges to confront,” Eliopoulos said during a conference call. “We’re moving into a much more challenging, low-return environment.” CalPERS assumes that, in the long-term, it will earn investment returns...

In a brief period of excitement (especially for completely unbiased John Harwood), Republican factions trying to stop Donald Trump's nomination noisily disrupted a vote on party convention rules. But, as The Hill reports, the Republican National Committee ignored the outcry from the angry delegates and adopted the convention's rules by a voice vote, rebuffing shouts by those looking to mount a last-ditch effort to sink Donald Trump. As Bloomberg reports, Delegates from Colorado were seen walking out of the convention hall, and former Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli was spotted angrily throwing his convention credentials to the floor. The disruption...

On Sunday three police officers were shot dead in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in an ambush attack. Three more were injured.
