Hoping to protect one of the Bay Area's main water supplies after the next major earthquake, construction crews will soon embark on a job that sounds like something out of a Jules Verne novel: building a massive, 5-mile-long tunnel underneath San Francisco Bay.The project is believed to be the first major tunnel ever built across the bay.Using a giant boring machine, workers will carve a 14-foot high corridor through clay, sand and bedrock from Menlo Park to Newark as deep as 103 feet below the bay floor. They'll then run a 9-foot-high steel water pipe through the middle."All the experts...

An employee at Guillermo's Sportfishing, Hotel and Restaurant said the larger quake was "muy fuerte" (very strong) but did not break anything. In San Felipe, the nearest large community to the north, about 150 miles away, "People report that they may have felt something but there are no reports of damage at this time," according to a 1 p.m. report on Sanfelipe.com. In Loreto, the largest city to the south, shaking was hardly felt. "My door slammed, but that could have been the wind," said Wendy Wilson, who lives in a Loreto RV Park.

The threat of a devastating tsunami hitting the U.S. West Coast might be higher than previously thought, scientists say, based on a new study of earthquake faults off the coast of Alaska. Tsunamis are often triggered by earthquakes, as was the case with the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which was sparked by the 9.3-magnitude Sumatra-Andaman subduction quake in the same ocean. The tsunami killed nearly a quarter of a million people. The new research suggests that future tsunamis could reach a scale far beyond that suffered in a 1964 tsunami generated by the great 9.2-magnitude Alaskan earthquake — "the most...

LOS ANGELES – Scientists have detected a spike in underground rumblings on a section of California's San Andreas Fault that produced a magnitude-7.8 earthquake in 1857. What these mysterious vibrations say about future earthquakes is far from certain. But some think the deep tremors suggest underground stress may be building up faster than expected and may indicate an increased risk of a major temblor.

CLEBURNE, Texas — The earth moved here on June 2. It was the first recorded earthquake in this Texas town's 140-year history — but not the last. There have been four small earthquakes since, none with a magnitude greater than 2.8. The most recent ones came Tuesday night, just as the City Council was meeting in an emergency session to discuss what to do about the ground moving. The council's solution was to hire a geology consultant to try to answer the question on everyone's mind: Is natural gas drilling — which began in earnest here in 2001 and has...

Gambolling in a toy-filled pen, pandas born after the Chinese earthquake chase each other and turn somersaults, oblivious to how many of them are lucky to be alive. The mothers of the eight-month-old cubs were pregnant when the Sichuan earthquake shattered the mountainside reserve that had been home to China’s national symbols. They were traumatised when the ground shook and boulders as big as cars came down the slopes, killing four keepers and one of the pandas. The last six animals were moved out of the Wolong reserve last month to a home in a similar lush gorge. The base...

The aftermath of the Abruzzo earthquake has witnessed the miraculous survival of people beneath collapsed buildings - and even of a small black dog which scampered out of the ruins of a house on Easter Sunday after nearly a week under the debris. But residents of Rocca di Cambio, a village high in the Gran Sasso mountains of Abruzzo 25 kilometres from L’Aquila, are celebrating the emergence of a more longstanding survivor: a long-lost 11th Century fresco depicting the Virgin Mary and infant Jesus. “This is wonderful news at a time of so much destruction and sorrow,” Antonio Pace, the...
