Like most cats, Max had a swagger in his walk. But because he was slightly overweight, the 15-year-old Maine coon began having trouble “jumping up on things,” his owner says, the extra pounds worsening his arthritis. So his owner, Jaime Wilson, decided her pet needed to go on a diet — barely two tablespoons of dry food in the morning and again at night, along with a larger portion of canned wet food once a day and a supervised exercise program that included treadmill work and running through stationary poles.

SALINE COUNTY, Ark. - The sound of a barking dog echoes down terrace drive. A sound that may haunt Bobby Brimer. "I mean it hurts to even think about what I've seen," he said. Monday morning, returning from errands, he turned on a road he's driven up for 30 years, only to witness an horrific attack. "Seen these dogs dragging a woman down the road into the ditch." He jumped out of his truck with his cane and tree trimming tools and tried to beat away the 8 or 9 dogs from the helpless woman. "She was laying in the...

Like a cocaine-fueled Homeric epic, Colombia’s long tragic battle with the drug cartels has produced countless heroes and villains. But one figure cutting across the country’s current narco battlefield, a name drawing praise and hate alike, is actually a 6-year-old German shepherd you can find trotting through the country’s airports. Sombra — “shadow” in English — is a drug-detection dog with the Colombian National Police. Over the past few years, her radar nose has led to more than 200 arrests and the seizure of at least nine tons of illicit drugs. That success has turned the dog into something of...

PYONGYANG, Korea, Democratic People's Republic Of -- In North Korea, summer is not a good time to be a dog. With the sizzling heat upon the country, North Korea's biggest brewery is pumping out twice as much beer as usual, Pyongyang residents are queuing up to get their "bingsu" -- a syrupy treat made with shaved ice -- and restaurants are serving up bowl after bowl of the season's biggest culinary attraction: spicy dog meat soup. Euphemistically known as "dangogi," or sweet meat, dog has long been believed to be a stamina food in North and South Korea and is...

You speak dog better than you think you do. You may not be fluent; that would require actually being a dog. But if you went to live in a dogs-only world, you’d be pretty good at understanding what they’re saying. You can tell a nervous yip from a menacing growl, a bark that says hello from a bark that says get lost. You can read the body language that says happy, that says sad, that says tired, that says scared, that says Please, please, please play with me right now!

DALLAS – Norman Junge was cleaning out a tank at a west Dallas metal recycling plant when his truck was stolen and eventually led police on a high-speed chase. But Junge, a burly, bearded fellow who spoke to the media in a tank top and a trucker’s cap, wasn’t worried about his Ford F-250 or the tank-bearing trailer hooked up to the back. His 10-year-old dog, Mia, was in the car with the suspect. “My first reaction is this dog. As far as that’s concerned,” he said, gesturing toward the truck, “that’s just material goods.”

Dog licks have been considered medically beneficial to humans for millennia. In ancient Egypt, dogs were used in healing practices since they believed that dog licks help heal injury or cure disease. Fijian fishermen also allowed their dogs to lick their wounds. And the French have a saying, “langue de chien, langue de médecin” which translates to “a dog’s tongue, a doctor’s tongue.” It is also a common belief that it is beneficial for us to lick our wounds because the mouth is home to an abundance of disinfectants or antimicrobial compounds. And in fact, this common belief does have...

The Humanization of Animals From the beginning of domestication, our ancestors in their great wisdom worked hard to erect a barrier between animals and humans in order to avoid falling into the trap of animal humanization and the very damaging sentimentality that accompanies it, as much for animals as for humans. Since animals are not inert objects that can be exploited at will without any risk of illness, injury, and environmental damage, it was necessary for reasons of common sense to take precautions to avoid the worst. PETER SINGER But for the past fifty years or so, animal advocates, such...

The Fourth of July is good fun for fireworks-loving humans. But for Stella, a 5-year-old pit bull mix, it feels like the end of the world. Stella finds the noise of the fireworks so terrifying that “she pretty much spends the whole week in the bathtub,” her owner, Vlad, who declined to share his last name, tells The Post. So this year, the Bushwick resident is trying a natural chill pill for his pup: CBD-infused dog treats. “We bought them out of desperation, really,” he says. His girlfriend ordered the chicken-flavored treats, which contain a calming, non-psychoactive hemp extract, from...
