The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019 was enacted this month well ahead of a still-pending budget bill. It was also the earliest date on the legislative calendar that the NDAA has been sent to a president for his signature in more than two decades. Congress matched dollar-for-dollar what the Pentagon asked for. The bill sped through Congress as the nation's military continues waging war in Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, Iraq, Niger, Libya, Somalia and an untold number of other global hot spots. All arise from what's been the Pentagon's main post-Sept. 11 focus: fighting terrorism. But this new...

As military personnel paraded through Warsaw on foot, horseback, and armored vehicles on Wednesday, Polish President Andrzej Duda reiterated his country's call for a permanent US military presence on its soil — a presence that the Eastern European country has said it's willing to pay $2 billion to get. A permanent US Army presence would "deter every potential aggressor," Duda said, it what was almost certainly a reference to Russia, whose recent assertive moves in Europe — particularly the 2014 annexation of Crimea and incursion in Ukraine — have prompted NATO members to increase their activity along the alliance's eastern...

A four-party delegation of parliament’s foreign affairs committee met with David B. Cornstein, the new United States ambassador to Hungary. Hungary has started a programme to raise its defense spending to an annual 2 percent of GDP. Zsolt Németh referred to frequent complaints from Donald Trump. The president supposes that Washington pays too much into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a military alliance between a host of European countries, the US and Canada. Parties at the talks agreed that Hungary’s “unilateral dependence” on Russian energy supplies was “not healthy” and agreed on the need of diversifying energy sources, Nemeth...

PITTSBURGH - Monday night several helicopters were seen flying low over the city, causing many Pittsburghers to question what was happening. At Channel 11 we received several calls, and got many more messages on the WPXI Facebook page. Viewers reported as many as six helicopters over the city, sometimes flying at heights that appeared to be just a few hundred feet above the ground. Channel 11 reached out to public safety officials and we're told it is part of a military training exercise "This is a planned exercise in cooperation with local authorities and is not in response to any...

Ukrainian president Poroshenko thanks Donald Trump ..... wonder that Putin has to say about this ? "Finally this day has come! The Pentagon announced Friday it would send $200 million in nonlethal military aid to Ukraine -- a move likely to anger Moscow. The American military hardware being shipped to Ukraine includes “secure communications, military mobility, night vision, and military medical treatment." Secretary of Defense James Mattis is also asking that Congress sign a waiver that would allow the U.S. to sell weapons to countries that also purchase arms from Russia. The idea is to make sure U.S. sanctions don’t push allies into the arms of Russia. “Russia should suffer consequences for its aggressive, destabilizing behavior and its illegal occupation of...

Among those who wish a disarmed population, any measure that makes firearms harder to access, possess, and use, is considered a positive thing. Thus guns with complex electronic circuitry, that only allow certain users, possibly at certain times and certain places, to fire the gun, are being promoted as items that can save lives. From Bloomberg the spark: Bloomberg follows 21-year-old inventor and entrepreneur Kai Kloepfer, who's created a "smart" handgun that could save thousands of lives. This is a one sided argument that pointedly ignores the other side of the equation. "Smart" guns can easily cost lives. According...

Italians are questioning the reasonableness and effectiveness of their complex and strict gun control laws. From thelocal.com: While 26 percent of people questioned in 2015 said they supported looser laws on owning a gun for self-defence, the latest research carried out by social studies institute Censis and private security sector organization Federsicurezza found that 39 percent were in favour. The percentage was highest among people with a low level of education and the elderly, rising to 51 percent among respondents who hadn't completed high school and 41 percent for the over-65s. The study also found that the number of...

Canada is a welsher state. (Hold your outrage, that adjective has nothing to do with the Welsh.) I am speaking specifically about this country’s financial contribution to NATO, the international alliance formed after World War II, constructed around the principle of collective defence. Article 5 of the establishing charter declares that “an attack on one is an attack on all.” Originally and for four decades the thrust of NATO’s raison d’être was deterring Soviet aggression. With the end of the Cold War, NATO shifted toward helping former Soviet-bloc countries embrace democracy and the market economy. But now it’s come full...

Is building a wall on our border a morally good action? As a professor who has taught biblical ethics for 41 years, I think it is – in fact, the Bible itself repeatedly views protective walls with favor. WALLS GIVE PEACE AND SECURITY In the world of the Old Testament, people built walls around cities to protect themselves from thieves, murderers, and other criminals, and from foreign invaders who would seek to destroy the city. People could still enter the city, but they had to do so by the gate, so that city officials would have some control over who...

Russia has pledged severe repercussions if President Donald Trump’s order to set up a new, space-oriented military branch violates a treaty banning nuclear weapons in the cosmos. Trump said this week he will establish a sixth branch of the military named the “Space Force,” pending budgetary approval from the U.S. Congress. The idea could require the U.S. to withdraw from the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, which prohibits the deployment of weapons of mass destruction but not conventional arms in space. Viktor Bondarev, head of the Committee on Defense and Security of Russia's upper parliamentary house, told the state-run RIA...

Austrian troops will carry out exercises preparing the nation’s border defence against a migration influx later this month after Balkans police warned 80,000 third-world migrants are heading towards Western Europe. With up to 1,000 police officers, soldiers, and riot police set to take part in June, the drill will be Austria’s largest ever border patrol exercise, according to Kronen Zeitung, Austria’s best-selling newspaper. The announcement came following a security conference in Slovenia at which police chiefs from countries along the Balkans migration routes warned they had seen a significant upsurge in the number of border crossings. Speaking after the conference,...

Poland is willing to pay the U.S. up to $2 billion for the installment of a permanent American military base in the nation. The ministry goes a step further in trying to coax the U.S. into agreeing to the terms, adding it is willing “to share the burden of defense spending, make the decision more cost-effective for the U.S. government and allay any concerns for Congress in uncertain budgetary times.” Poland has long asked for American support, including troops and a permanent military base, for decades. “For the first time since the Second World War, one European country has taken...

How a scary name for an arbitrary group of firearms distorts the gun control debate James Huberty, a 41-year-old survivalist who had recently lost his job as a security guard, spent the morning of July 18, 1984, at the San Diego Zoo with his wife, Etna, and their two daughters. The family ate lunch at a McDonald's restaurant in the Clairemont neighborhood before returning to their home in San Ysidro. After Etna lay down to rest, Huberty approached her and said, "I want to kiss you goodbye." When she asked him where he was going, he said he was "hunting...

"If they try to remove Trump, (there) won't be a Constitution Crisis; it'll be a Revolution Crisis," a call in guest told a popular U.S. talk show host recently. With a population of 325 million and over 300 million firearms, America’s gun owners have no intention of allowing gun grabbers to steal their lawfully owned firearms. Amendment II of the US Constitution states "A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." The militia acts of 1792 and 1903 are giving militia groups...
