Police say Arrez is a Mexican citizen and had been in the state for just a few days. "He's in Texas less than a week and involved in an ambush-type shooting," said homicide Sgt. Bruce McDonald. For perhaps the only time Wednesday evening, the masses assembled outside Dallas City Hall grew quiet as the man who drew them there, Phillip Dennis, hunched over a wooden lectern, his eyes narrowing. "We will be called haters, and we are. We are haters of big-spending politicians. We will be called racists, and we are – we are members of the human race," Dennis, a McKinney resident, said as silence turned to roars. Such moments encapsulated the spirit of area "Tax Day Tea Parties" – unapologetic public rallies that involved Republicans, conservatives and libertarians railing against government expansion, federal taxation...

George and Laura Bush left their cul-de-sac in the back of a dark sedan, exited through a Secret Service checkpoint and rode down streets bordered by lawn signs adorned with gigantic Ws to welcome them home. It had been a bad week for the country. President Obama spoke on television about the burdens he had inherited in office: anti-American sentiment, two wars, a recession. But it had been a good...

Anti-God Ads Hit Dallas by Christine Dao* In the heart of the Bible belt, billboards stating “Don’t believe in God? You are not alone” have been posted in parts of Dallas, home of the Institute for Creation Research. The boards are sponsored by the Dallas-Fort Worth Coalition of Reason (DFWCoR), an atheist nonprofit group which joins together smaller local anti-theistic organizations to “increase the growth, visibility and acceptance of nontheists throughout the Metroplex.”[1] Two ads have been posted in the D/FW area, one just a few miles from ICR headquarters, and will remain up through April. According to Fred Edwords...

Don't miss the Tea Party scheduled for Apr 15, 2009 at Dallas City Hall from 6pm to 9pm. The drive by media can't ignore us if we have a strong showing. Web site is www.dallasteaparty.org and I would encourage everyone to show up and let our voices sould the alarm. It's way too late to say it doesn't matter, and the heck we raise might keep the socialists in check. Contact Philip through this web site or e-mail me. Perhaps a few of you remember the greeting we had for the Health Care Express in Arlington in 1994. I do...

As he rushed his family to the hospital, 26-year-old NFL running back Ryan Moats rolled through a red light. A Dallas police officer pulled their SUV over outside the emergency room. Moats and his wife explained that her mother was dying inside the hospital. "You really want to go through this right now?" Moats pleaded. "My mother-in-law is dying. Right now!" The officer, 25-year-old Robert Powell, was unmoved. He spent long minutes writing Moats a ticket and threatened him with arrest. "I can screw you over," the officer told Moats. "I'd rather not do that." The scene last week, captured...

I am visiting my children in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. I intend to take them shooting today, but I have not been to a range in the area for a few years. My daughter lives in the northern part of Dallas and we want to go shooting pistols this afternoon. I would appreciate any suggestions about ranges or places that would be available for us to shoot. In Arizona, where I live, it is fairly easy to find places to shoot on public land, as about 85% of Arizona is publicly owned land. However, most of Texas is privately owned,...

This time it's United State Trade Representative nominee Ron Kirk who owes back taxes, joining the ranks of other tax-addled Cabinet nominees such as Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, former Health and Human Services Secretary designate Tom Daschle, and former chief performance officer nominee Nancy Killifer. Kirk owes $9,975 in back taxes, most of that from speaking engagement honoraria. Kirk had told organizations to give speaking fees directly to his alma mater, Austin College. In all, $37,750 of honoraria were not reported as income for tax years 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007, the Senate Finance Committee reported, saying that Kirk should...

Add former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk to the list of Obama Cabinet picks with tax problems. The Senate Finance Committee says he underpaid by $9,975 in the last three years. Senate aides uncovered the shortfall during weeks of vetting, and Kirk – the administration’s designated point person on trade -- has promised to pay the Internal Revenue Service in full. The problems: Kirk deducted too much for season tickets to the Dallas Mavericks and too much for tax preparation fees, and failed to report as income speaking fees that he donated to his alma mater, Austin College. The full political...

The city of Dallas' gun buyback program yielded 147 guns in exchange for $50 grocery store gift cards Saturday, the city announced. Although many of the guns turned in were generations-old rifles and shotguns, a few of the guns more typically used in crimes – handguns – were collected. "This shows that people will be behind a positive activity," said Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway, who spearheaded the event at Reunion Arena. "Some of those guns are ones our officers are up against." Throughout the morning, a steady stream of young and old braved the cold weather to turn...

Bush and his wife, former first lady Laura Bush. Former first lady Laura Bush says she didn't watch President Barack Obama's speech to Congress because "I just totally forgot about it." But Mrs. Bush hasn't become totally disengaged from politics in the roughly five weeks since she and her husband, George W. Bush, moved out of the White House. She says, for example, that she remains very interested in what happens in Afghanistan, calling Obama's developing policy there "encouraging." Mrs. Bush made women's rights issues in Afghanistan a personal priority, and she visited there alone on at least two occasions. She said the fact she overlooked Obama's speech was...

If you've seen the yellow bags on your door knob, you probably know this is the day Boy Scouts collect food for the hungry. Their goal - 500,000 items. But behind one door knob, a local Cub Scout troop solicited a pretty special donor, former president George W. Bush. For 10,000 local kids, scouting for food is door to door, and it's neighbor to neighbor. But for the boys of Troop 19, their newest neighbor is guarded by the police and the Secret Service. Getting the former president's canned goods is no simple matter. "You had to do a bit...

The website of a New York TV network whose aim is to improve American perceptions of Islam was shut down this morning, two days after its founder admitted to the beheading of his wife. And while that irony might bring a momentary smile, another attempt to conceal the facts behind an honor killing right here in America should stir nothing short of outrage. Muzzammil Hassan, CEO of Bridges TV, whose motto is "connecting people through understanding," apparently didn't think Thursday's honor killing -- and make no mistake about what this was -- at the station might somehow blur that message....

The Gulf Cartel in Mexico has now been deemed the biggest terroristic threat in the United States, including in North Texas. In recent months, there have been no kidnappings or deaths related to the Gulf Cartel in North Texas, authorities say. However, a large task force recently arrested dozens of cartel members and confiscated millions in cash, drugs and weapons. The Gulf Cartel has been called one of the most dangerous groups in the world, and authorities said they have waged a war to control all the drugs coming into the U.S. from Mexico. "Where is the Money?" Where is the Outrage?? by: Tom McClusky The Washington Post today has an article on how protestors are currently in Washington to protest that the federal government isn't providing the victims enough money (presumably because they believe President Bush created the storm with his weather controlling machine.) The Post article certainly romanticizes the protestors: "They came to Washington yesterday from temporary housing, from apartments in Houston, hotel rooms in Dallas and spare bedrooms in cousins' homes. They came to say that the only place they really want to go is home." What the Post fails to mention is...

And if he did make it, Hayes wasn't sure he'd be alive to see the day. In 1999, he made an emotional October trip to Washington, D.C., to visit his older sister, Lucille Hester. In a hotel restaurant, they discussed a variety of subjects, including what he wanted her to say if his dream of getting into the Hall of...
