The Republican Party’s efforts to cite Illinois as a dire example of what happens when Democrats run a state was strongly contested by that state’s leading Democrats. Republicans say that the fact that there are more people on welfare in the state than are working is a sign of poor government policies. Governor Pat Quinn characterized this argument as “misleading. The fact that a prosperous minority is able to support the majority is a triumph of democracy. The ‘haves’ caring for the ‘have nots’ is the implementation of a moral ideal that lies at the core of every major religion.”...

Dr. Victor Ho lives in an upscale Houston neighborhood. He never imagined he’d be a victim of a violent crime. But that changed the day he came home to find himself face-to-face with two armed robbers. However, instead of feeling anger towards the young men who threatened him and his family’s safety, Ho and his wife, Arielle Lawson, instead threw them a lifeline: the offer of a free education. “We thought, how can we show our children how to make a good situation out of a bad situation and be a better person than the person who did this to...

Everybody recognizes the names of Michael Brown and Darren Wilson in connection with the riots in Ferguson. But here’s a question. What was the name of the manager of the convenience store who Michael Brown strongarmed? We may not be able to cite a name, but Joe Biden can put us in the ballpark. ”You cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent.” We know that whatever his name was it was of Indian derivation. The Ferguson Market, where Brown allegedly grabbed a handful of cigars before his deadly encounter with police,...

You know the fix is in when a suspect who shot an unarmed man voluntarily provides four hours of un-cross examined testimony to a grand jury without taking the Fifth. On Aug. 9, Ferguson, Missouri Police Officer Darren Wilson gunned down 18-year-old African-American Michael Brown. Since that fateful day, people across the country have protested against racial profiling, excessive police force, and the failure of the criminal justice system to provide accountability. The nail in the coffin of “equal justice under law” came on Nov. 24, when the St. Louis County grand jury refused to indict Wilson for any criminal...

The late Daniel Patrick Moynihan’s celebrated phrase “defining deviancy down” first appeared in a 1993 essay in The American Scholar. “I proffer the thesis,” wrote Moynihan, “that, over the past generation…the amount of deviant behavior in American society has increased beyond the levels the community can ‘afford to recognize’ and that, accordingly, we have been re-defining deviancy so as to exempt much conduct previously stigmatized.” What used to be a civil rights movement has drawn a bright line behind the late Michael Brown, whose guilt in two violent felonies (robbing a convenience store while assaulting a store clerk, and assaulting...

"But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere." - James 3:17 (NIV)- By: Larry Walker II - It was back in the late 90's when a good friend of mine, an old Air Force veteran named Dan, relayed to me that he had recently killed a young Black male at a bus stop. When I first heard this I was shocked and in disbelief. Old Dan must have been close to 70 years old at the time, his body riddled with cancer, brain...

What, you may ask, does a tragic police-involved shooting have to do with the brutal rape and murder—50 years ago—of a woman from Queens, NY? That’s easy… Learning absolutely zero from its absurdly inaccurate and biased coverage of the Genovese case, the media did it again—big time—with the Mike Brown/Darren Wilson matter. Everyone seems to remember that “38″ witnesses to Kitty’s death “did nothing.” Yet, no one seems to remember the name of the vile perp Winston Moseley, or that Genovese was at least his third murder victim. Nor do they remember that Moseley was caught precisely because the public...

Last year, Philadelphia abortionist Dr. Kermit Gosnell stood trial in Philadelphia for the deaths of one woman and seven babies who had their throats slit, but national reporters didn't want to cover it. It's a "local crime story," they said. Washington Post media blogger Erik Wemple said that when he asked national reporters about avoiding the Gosnell story, the typical response was "Get out of my face with this agenda-driven stuff, and come back when you have a real story." Ferguson, Missouri, is merely the latest proof that a "local crime story" can be elevated to national news -- when...

Embattled Nevada Assemblyman Ira Hansen was found innocent after facing a misdemeanor charge of illegally setting animal traps. A New River Township Justice Court judge ruled that Hansen was not guilty of a misdemeanor when he set four animal traps known as snares within 200 feet of public roadways in Churchill County. The decision caps what’s been a yearlong battle and difficult month for Hansen, a Sparks lawmaker who recently stepped down as the Assembly speaker-elect. In November 2013, the Nevada Department of Wildlife spotted Hansen removing traps that were within the 200-foot limit. The department assembled a case and...

A decades-long study has found that budding lawyers are increasingly in favor of harsher punishments. Professor Franz Streng at the University of Erlangen in Bavaria asked his first-year law students the same set of questions every year from 1989 to 2012. “At the beginning of their studies, they’ve still only had their opinions formed by school, their parents and the media,” Streng said. He found that despite the young people feeling less at risk from crime from year to year, they became more and more positive about harsher punishments for criminals. …

What do y'all think about the riots in Ferguson? Rocks, bottles, bricks, Molotov cocktails thrown. Stores looted and burned. Private property destroyed. Cars burned. Churches burned. Smoke, tear gas. Gunfire, including from automatic (assault) rifles. Looked and sounded like a war zone. Dang. Almost as bad as those tea party rallies the DHS has been warning us about.

This past week-end on Meet the Press, former NYC Mayor Rudy Guiliani was insulted and smeared by fellow panelist and MSNBC host Michale  Eric Dyson. Dyson went so far as to accuse Guiliani of having a mentality akin to white supremacists. This is all the left has when confronted with the truth, which is exactly what Guiliani provided as he cited crime stats. But Dyson would have none of it. (I wrote about the exchange, here.) Guiliani has continued to try to place facts between the ears of anyone out there who appears allergic to them when he was...
