ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - A Florida man's ex-wife used a stun gun on him, tied him to a truck bumper and dragged him for half a mile before he escaped, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office reported. Robert Hall, 54, remained in the surgical intensive care unit on Thursday at Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach, where he was being treated for a broken pelvis, broken facial bones and bleeding in his brain, according to the sheriff's office. Gangs provide a support system, a feeling of “community”, and a sense of purpose for many young people. Unfortunately, most of these gangs use violence and crime to achieve their goals, and they are taking over communities all over America. If your community is not a gang-infested war zone yet, you should consider yourself to be very fortunate. If nothing is done about this, the violence and the crime that is fueled by these gangs will continue to spread, and eventually nearly every single community in the United States will be affected by it. Let’s take a closer look at...

When the crime experts are baffled, I’m here to help. The Los Angeles Times reported last week that crime in the city of Los Angeles has dropped for the tenth straight year. As is often the case, criminologists are at pains to explain why. Note that there are always ready explanations when crime goes up. You simply point to whatever socioeconomic malady that happens to be occurring and blame it for any concurrent rise in the crime rate. Recession? Crime goes up. Housing slump? Ditto. Rise in unemployment? Uh huh. You get the idea. It all fits in nicely with...

But he also paid homage to the Washington conventional wisdom about the many and varied causes of this calamity — from mental health issues to school safety. In fact, the problem is not complex, and the solution is blindingly obvious. People point to three sets of causes...

An on-air stunt involving an empty high-capacity gun magazine brandished by NBC "Meet the Press" host David Gregory last Sunday in the wake of the Newtown, Conn., school shootings has taken a bizarre twist. But it raises important issues about fairness and equality before the law. After being called out by viewers, the Metropolitan Police Department confirmed that the incident is "under investigation" because it's illegal to even have such a device in one's possession in the District of Columbia, where the show was taped. The law in question is crystal clear: "No person in the District shall possess, sell,...

Soft targets are targets that are easy to attack. Generally they were places where there would be little or no defense and where many innocent children and adults would be murdered. Cowards go for soft targets so they can achieve their sordid goals with little or no resistance."

Unfortunately, those assumptions do not always align with the facts. Myth: Enhanced background checks will keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of these madmen. Reality: Most mass murderers do not have criminal records or a history of psychiatric hospitalization. Myth: Restoring the federal ban on assault weapons will prevent these horrible crimes. Representative Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) characterized the slayings as “a very fortuitous event for those of us determined to disarm the general public. The fact that so many of the victims were young children should go a long way toward softening up the opposition of the right wing gun nuts who have blocked constructive measures against this much needed action.” The ineffectiveness of current laws banning weapons in public schools failed to stem McCarthy’s hopes....

The two main proposals for making schools safer are: 1. Reduce or eliminate guns in the general population, and 2. Eliminate “gun-free zones” around schools permitting teachers and administrators to bring personal guns to school. We should seriously consider a third way: build a variety of defensive systems into each school that could stop or at least slow down armed attackers.

SUGAR CREEK TOWNSHIP — Although some local law enforcement officials say the concealed-carry law isn’t perfect, there has been little negative fallout in Walworth County during its first year. It’s been a little more than a year since Wisconsin adopted the concealed carry law, and despite high profile tragedies in Milwaukee, law enforcement officials in Walworth County report that the Wild West has not returned like detractors claimed it would. The Wisconsin Department of Justice has approved more than 138,500 concealed carry permits since Act 35 went into effect Nov. 1, 2011, and DOJ statistics show that handgun sales are...
