US agents at Guantanamo Bay tortured a Saudi man suspected of involvement in the 11 September attacks, the official overseeing trials at the camp has said. Susan Crawford told the Washington Post newspaper that Mohammad al-Qahtani had been left in a "life-threatening condition" after being interrogated. She said Mr Qahtani had been subjected to sustained periods of cold, isolation and sleep deprivation. Mr Qahtani remains at Guantanamo, but all charges against him were dropped. He had been facing trial on counts of conspiracy, terrorism, and murder in violation of the laws of war.

A Bush administration official responsible for reviewing practices at Guantanamo Bay says the U.S. military tortured a Saudi national who allegedly planned to participate in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, the Washington Post reported. "We tortured [Mohammed al-]Qahtani," Susan J. Crawford told the Post. "His treatment met the legal definition of torture. And that's why I did not refer the case" for prosecution. ‘Jim Crawford’ RepublicansThe GOP is working to keep eligible African-Americans from voting in several states. Jonathan Alter Newsweek Web Exclusive Updated: 2:37 PM ET Sep 11, 2008 It was a mainstay of Jim Crow segregation: for 100 years after the Civil War, Southern white Democrats kept eligible blacks from voting with poll taxes, literacy tests and property requirements. Starting in the 1960s, the U.S. Supreme Court declared these assaults on the heart of American democracy unconstitutional. Now, with the help of a 2008 Supreme Court decision, Crawford vs. Marion County (Indiana) Election Board, white Republicans in some areas will keep...

The AP gives us a story about some so-called “documentary” about what evil befell the poor folks of Crawford, Texas, after Governor George W. Bush bought his ranch property there. I’ll start right out with the key section that pretty much describes what we’re dealing with, a quote by the director of this film. “I wanted to do a film indicting Bush for this political stagecraft, using this town as a prop.” A guy that wanted to exploit the kind folks of Crawford, Texas is being presented as a wonderful fellow by the press? Say it isn’t so! Naturally, the...

The festivities got under way last night with a rehearsal dinner hosted by the groom's parents in the tourist town of Salado, Texas, about 54 miles from Crawford. There'll be a barbecue lunch today back at the ranch. The father of the bride uses his weekend radio chat today to pay tribute...

April 30, 2008, 6:00 a.m. Voters Are Far from the Biggest LosersLife after Crawford. By Abigail Thernstrom For one of the most anticipated big decisions of the current Supreme Court term, the Indiana voter-ID ruling Monday is certainly a bit anti-climactic. No big deal, Justice John Paul Stevens, writing the lead opinion, said, in essence. The Indiana law requires citizens, before voting, to show an approved photo identification — a passport or driver’s license, for instance. “There is no question about the legitimacy or importance of the State’s interest in counting only the votes of eligible voters,” Stevens concluded....

Officials said they have detained a British man after he flew near President Bush’s Crawford ranch, later taking him to Austin for a mental evaluation. McLennan County sheriff’s deputies were called by the U.S. Secret Service on Friday evening to a pasture five to seven miles from the president’s ranch about a possibly intoxicated pilot, Chief Deputy Randy Plemons said. Bush was not at the ranch when the incident happened. At the time of the call, a heavy thunderstorm was passing through the Crawford area, but Plemons said he wasn’t sure what factors caused the pilot to land in the...

CRAWFORD v. MARION COUNTY ELECTION BD. (Nos. 07-21 and 07-25) Web-accessible at: http://www.law.cornell.edu/supct/html/07-21.ZS.html Argued: January 9, 2008 -- Decided: April 28, 2008* Opinion author: Stevens =============================================================== After Indiana enacted an election law (SEA 483) requiring citizens voting in person to present government-issued photo identification, petitioners filed separate suits challenging the law's constitutionality. Following discovery, the District Court granted respondents summary judgment, finding the evidence in the record insufficient to support a facial attack on the statute's validity. In affirming, the Seventh Circuit declined to judge the law by the strict standard set for poll taxes in Harper v....

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court upheld Indiana’s voter identification law on Monday, concluding in a splintered decision that the challengers failed to prove that the law’s photo ID requirement placed an unconstitutional burden on the right to vote. The 6-to-3 ruling kept the door open to future lawsuits that provided more evidence. But this theoretical possibility was small comfort to the dissenters or to critics of voter ID laws, who predicted that a more likely outcome than successful lawsuits would be the spread of measures that would keep some legitimate would-be voters from the polls. Voting experts said the ruling...

The Supreme Court's refusal to strike down an Indiana law requiring government-issued photo identification at the ballot box could disenfranchise minority and elderly voters at next week's primary and prompt other states to pass similar laws, voting advocates said Monday. The court, in a splintered 6-3 ruling Monday, said Indiana's law, which took effect in 2006 and requires voters to present a state or federal photo ID card at the ballot box, does not violate the First or 14th amendments. The court said the law served as a justifiable protection to the electoral process. "It's especially worrisome that the court...

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has ruled that states can require voters to produce photo identification without violating their constitutional rights. The decision validates Republican-inspired voter ID laws. The court vote 6-3 to uphold Indiana's strict photo ID requirement. Cindy Sheehan barely fits into her "campaign limo," her sister's blue Hyundai Tiburon. She ducks low to avoid hitting her head on the way in, and her knees are nearly at her chest when she sits, even with the seat rolled all the way back. Traveling over the Oakland Bay Bridge, her campaign manager at the wheel--steering with one hand and scrolling through e-mails with the other--the 6-foot-tall antiwar activist turned congressional hopeful tries in vain to stretch out in the passenger seat. It's raining when they pull into a parking spot near Berkeley City College, where Sheehan is about...

One morning last August in San Francisco, six women in pink sweaters marched up a hilly boulevard towing pink roller bags full of shoes. They unzipped the bags in front of Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi's house, dumped the shoes on her lawn, and went on to arrange loafers, pumps, and pink glittery sandals like hawkers at a yard sale. Anchoring their display was a pair of combat boots, placed on Pelosi's doorstep. The boots, like the other shoes, had been pulled from a dead body in Iraq—the body of Casey Sheehan, in fact, whose mother, Cindy, is running as an Independent...

CRAWFORD, Tex. It was just two years ago that Cindy Sheehan pierced the national consciousness with her roadside vigil near President Bush's Texas ranch in protest of the Iraq war. Several thousand demonstrators came to Crawford to join Sheehan in 2005, capturing the international media spotlight and seemingly crystallizing the antiwar movement. Before long, Sheehan was transformed from a grieving mother moved to protest by the loss of her son in Iraq into a globe-trotting antiwar hero. Eventually banned from the roadside, she bought five acres of land to serve as a base for future protests, dubbing it Camp Casey...

While US public has heavily turned against the Iraq war, the protest site near President George W. Bush's Texas ranch had just one permanent demonstrator Wednesday -- two if you count the dog. "She's full time, and I'm full time," Carl Rising-Moore, 61, said cheerfully of "Sunny," a frisky stray dog bounding around the arid grounds of the camp that anti-war mom Cindy Sheehan set up in tribute to her slain Iraq soldier son. Rising-Moore, a Canadian-born naturalized US citizen, said he runs workshops on how to hold non-violent protests and that the goal is to "create a movement here"...

CRAWFORD — From a wooden bench in front of a shop selling mementos of "The Western White House," tourist Chuck Yorde wondered aloud why he seemed to be the only visitor in town. "If his poll numbers were up there above 50-60 percent, this place would probably be a little more jumping," said Yorde, surveying the empty parking spots up and down Lone Star Parkway. The resident of Youngstown, Ohio, was almost apologetic about his own presence in the town near President Bush's 1,600-acre ranch. He said he was visiting his sister in nearby Gatesville who's "a big Bush fan...

Bush has been hinting around that he's about to play his big winning card and call his conservative base "racist" for opposing his mass amnesty bill. The Minutemen might even be able to find out.

Did St. Cindy’s peace group commit fraud to attract donations? posted at 10:55 am on April 5, 2007 by Allahpundit Niiiice work here by Sweetness & Light. He’s a teensy bit unfair when he says the process of filing for 501(c)(3) status should only take a few minutes (true with respect to filling out the application, but it can take months to be formally approved by the IRS) but otherwise he’s got himself a solid case of malfeasance. Do their actions rise to the level of fraud, though? To prove criminal fraud you typically have to show intent to deceive...

CRAWFORD, Texas - Near the lone stoplight on Main Street, a for-sale sign hangs from a dusty window where a souvenir shop used to sell cufflinks, cowboy boots and denim shirts emblazoned “The Western White House.” Another gift store across the street is shuttered too, though a sign says it will reopen elsewhere. And the biggest souvenir shop in Crawford is reporting a drop in sales. The Washington professionals have their polls, their focus groups and their newspaper editorials. CRAWFORD — War protester Cindy Sheehan and several fellow peace activists were arrested this morning outside President Bush’s ranch where Bush is meeting with Vice President Dick Cheney, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and others on Iraq war policy. Sheehan, arrested just after 11, said she and others were conducting a “peace surge” to address concerns that Bush may increase U.S. troop numbers in Iraq. The Bush administration is under mounting pressure to change its tactics in an increasingly unpopular conflict. Among the suggestions Bush is considering is a temporary surge in U.S. troops. Just before...

A six-person McLennan County jury Thursday convicted the two Iraq war protesters charged with obstructing a street near the president’s ranch in Crawford.
