Former Terrorist, Nazi to Speak At Columbia By Nathan Burchfiel CNSNews.com Staff Writer October 09, 2006 (CNSNews.com) - One week after protestors interrupted a speech by Minutemen founder Jim Gilchrest at Columbia University, student organizers are asking their colleagues to allow two former terrorists and a former Nazi soldier to speak freely. The university's College Republicans on Wednesday will host former PLO terrorist Walid Shoebat, former Lebanese terrorist Zachariah Anani and former Nazi soldier Hilmar von Campe in a panel discussion on "issues that are vital to the safety of America and Western Civiliation," according to the university. "While last...

College students have organized clubs on dozens of campuses to defend their Second Amendment rights -- and to have fun with guns. "We go to the gun range because it's fun and educational," said Michaela LeBlanc, a senior at Smith College in Northampton, Mass. Miss LeBlanc travels to the nearby Smith & Wesson Shooting Sports Center with friends from the Smith College Republicans. This fall, they will seek recognition from the college as an official club. At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Dax Dixson founded the Tar Heel Rifle and Pistol Club. He said he thought fellow...

Confronting Academic Liberalism by: Julia A. Seymour, June 16, 2006 One sued her university, another was caricatured in her college newspaper, and the third stood up against school administration and would not back down. Conservative student activists are no longer anomalies, rare individuals who stand up to fight against liberalism on their campuses. The Eagle Forum Summit not only drew student activists, it featured several student speakers who have been waging battles for conservatism in Georgia, Virginia and Utah. Ruth Malhotra spoke first about her experiences at Georgia Tech which included being singled out in class and being threatened with...

WASHINGTON, June 2 /U.S. Newswire/ -- As more and more experts continue to confirm the harmful effects of global warming, the College Republican National Committee is urging its membership to mock the threat by throwing beach parties this summer. The College Republicans actions demonstrate the misplaced priorities and short-sightedness of the future of the Republican Party, according to the Democratic National Committee. As College Democrats continue to fight for issues that young Americans care about like an affordable college education, Republicans continue to push their out of touch agenda. "The College Republicans' beach parties mocking global warming are just another...

Governor Rod Blagojevich could have been snippy. He could have been terse. Instead, he had some fun with a group of College Republicans who came out to his appearance at the University of Illinois yesterday. The group wore blue T-shirts emblazoned with an anti-Blagojevich slogan ("Blagojevich sucks") to protest a decision that could put some of the Illinois Student Assistance Commission's student loan portfolio up for sale. The governor announced the program and touted its potential to provide student aid to more students. Then he looked at the College Republicans and said he wanted a T-shirt. In Blagojevich's words, "I...

When their affirmative action bake sale was shut down, College Republicans at the Georgia Institute of Technology bristled. When university officials ordered parts of their protest signs for “The Vagina Monologues” be painted over with white paint, they fumed. Now, two members of the student organization are suing the public university in Atlanta, alleging the school’s Community Policies repeatedly restricted their free speech and continue to infringe on their rights. The university’s Community Guide for 2005-06 identifies several “Acts of Intolerance” that are considered “unacceptable,” including “any attempt to injure, harm, malign or harass a person because of race, religious...

Yesterday, someone found some racist graffiti at a dormitory at DePaul's Lincoln Park campus. There were swastikas found, the 'n' word, the usual hateful stuff that mental midgets scrawl. The Chicago Police are investigating the incident as a possible hate crime. So far so good. But leave it to DePaul further muck up the waters. Denise Mattson, DePaul's Assistant Vice President for Public Relations, is alluding that, surprise, conservatives, specifically, the DePaul Conservative Alliance contributed to the incident. From UPI: DePaul University spokesperson Denise Mattson told WBBM Radio the incident was an assault on the university's values. Mattson said the...

Since the 1960s, liberal organizations have infested American colleges like NIU. These groups have held numerous rallies and events promoting abortion, gay marriage, anti-American propaganda and countless other left-wing agendas. Thank the good Lord NIU has the College Republicans who constantly battle these liberal forces ... oh wait, never mind. They don't. Since my first encounter with the CR in 2004, I have been consistently let down by the group's lack of interest in promoting conservative issues at NIU. Rather than advancing conservative ideology or standing up to liberal detractors, the leadership of the CR has regularly and cowardly shied...

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Protests are planned for Monday in the same area of campus at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where, authorities said, a former student plowed a sport utility vehicle into nine people Friday afternoon. The College Republicans, Americans for an Informed Democracy and the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies are sponsoring the event, scheduled for 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday in "The Pit," a central area of the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. The event is open to the public and free of charge. Police said Mohammad Taheri-azar, a 2005 UNC-Chapel Hill graduate, admits...

FRAMINGHAM -- Leaders of the student group that protested a production of"The Vagina Monologues" at Framingham State College on Wednesday say administrators squelched their right to free speech by forcing them into shrinking the size of the picketing. They claim the restrictions placed against them are part of a larger suppression of free speech on campus. "It just seems like the campus is afraid of free speech and the administration wants to do whatever is necessary to avoid bad publicity for the college," said Thomas Lincoln, a member of the College Republicans. In the weeks leading up the protest, school...

A confrontation will be avoided "if our students have anything to do with it," UC Irvine Dean of Students Sally Peterson said. "But who knows who might show up." Peterson said her concerns are protecting students' safety and security as well as their free speech rights. She declined to reveal the specifics of the increased security. Representatives of...

2006: Turning point for young conservatives Posted: January 5, 2006 By Hans Zeiger Something big is going on in America, but few are yet aware of it. It is a generational shift comparable to that of the infamous '60s, and it will involve as much revolt and upheaval. In this case, revolution is desperately needed, for the previous revolution has almost destroyed the country. The new revolution will repair the country. Yet 2006 will not be the beginning of the revolution – it has already been gathering steam now for several years. But it will, I predict, commence the vigorous...

Where is the outrage that was manufactured to run Rush Limbaugh off the air? Is it absent because Gumbel is allegedly black? So just picture for a moment, if you will, that you're watching SportsCenter tonight and Dan Patrick says, "The lack of whites in the NBA makes it look like a welfare office." Think that would get buried like Gumbel's comments? For what it's worth, maybe Gumbel should do some research on the emerging face of the GOP.

Some cast aside traditional loyalties... Adam Hunter, an ambitious law student with bright eyes, an easy smile, and plenty of charisma, seems practically destined for politics... a first-year law student at Howard University, a historically black campus with a long record of liberal activism. He has political ambitions of his own -- but not with the Democrats. Instead, Hunter, who as an undergraduate headed Howard's chapter of College Republicans, sees himself as part of a younger generation of African-Americans. He is ready to cast aside traditional loyalties to the Democratic Party and forge his own political identity. ''There's a lot...

I'm heading home in a bit after an enjoyable event at Oberlin College kicking off the Ronald Reagan Lecture Series. It was refreshing to see a healthy, engaged group of College Republicans on campus, and some wonderful professors on their side grounded in reality. C-SPAN covered the speech, which will probably air in the next week or so. I think "Unhinged" is having the salutary effect of making liberal students very self-conscious about their behavior at conservative speakers' events. Before I spoke, students passed around anonymous flyers, which read in part: This flyer is written to inform you that the...

Conservative columnist Ann Coulter visited GW's campus Feb. 10. Gary Livacari defends the decision to bring her to campus. Tim Kaldas explores what it means for the College Republicans to stand behind Coulter's remarks: The anger has settled and the hysterics have faded. The Ann Coulter event of Feb. 10 is now a permanent chapter in GW history. For the College Republicans, it was the pinnacle of an already outstanding year. Ms. Coulter's address reminded the student body that conservative activism continues to prosper - in full force - at this ostensibly "progressive" university. Despite dire warnings from campus feminist...

Liberals beware! Your worst nightmare is near. No, I’m not talking about a visit from George W. Bush. But, like the president, her mere presence is enough to leave some leftists totally unhinged - and even elicit some flying pies! Her name is Ann Coulter and next Friday night [February 10] she comes to the George Washington campus. For the College Republicans, it will be the culmination of an outstanding, historic year. More importantly, Ms. Coulter’s address will remind the student body that conservative activism continues to prosper – in full force - at this ostensibly “progressive” university. Coulter has...

DePaul University is rapidly becoming ground zero in the battle to reform academia’s corrupted political culture. For the third time in less than a year the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) has publicly rebuked the university for its politically motivated abridgment of free speech, this time for shutting down an anti-affirmative action bake sale and threatening to punish one of the organizers for violation of a newly instituted anti-discrimination policy. The DePaul Conservative Alliance set up a table in the Student Center where they were selling cookies and suggesting differing prices based on race, ethnicity and gender. It...

Earlier this month, Chicago's DePaul University, pressured by the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), agreed to drop its bizarre "propaganda ban" that the administration used as an attempt to silence DePaul College Republicans last fall. Controversial University of Colorado Professor Ward Churchill, in a paid appearance, spoke at DePaul, and the College Republicans faced several school administration roadblocks as they tried to protest that event. FIRE's interim president, Greg Lukianoff, stated earlier this month on the Hannity & Colmes show that in terms of free speech issues, DePaul was "a basketcase." Still, with its dropping of the "propaganda...

The latest edition of the DePaulia, the campus newspaper of DePaul, is out and online. For those new to Marathon Pundit, I've been blogging about the misadventures of Chicago's DePaul University for almost a year now. This MP post from last month sums things up pretty concisely. Last March 1, I reported on DePaul's suspension of Thomas Klocek, who defended Israel from exaggerated charges from some Muslim students. As with most American colleges, there truly is a deep liberal bias at DePaul. For instance, last fall, Dr. Harvette Grey invited that hero of the anti-American Left, Ward Churchill, to speak...

Protests on college campuses are becoming more sophisticated and more often staged by conservative students. Some conservatives say activism is growing because of a national network reaching out to students who've felt too threatened in the past to speak up on liberal campuses. "The tides are turning on college campuses," said Jason Mattera, spokesman for the conservative Young America's Foundation in Herndon, Va. "Conservative students will not take liberal garbage anymore." At the University of Colorado at Boulder, student Republicans made national news by holding an anti-affirmative-action bake sale where the "suggested donation" for a cookie depended on the race...

First, a flashback to Tuesday's Chicago Tribune article about Thomas Klocek's free speech struggle at DePaul University, as the Chicago college's president, Father Dennis Holtschneider, speaks out about free speech: "I get accused of being against free speech," Holtschneider said. "But freedom of speech for students requires they have a professor who treats them with respect." Well, the free speech problems at DePaul go beyond its reprehensible conduct in the Klocek affair. FIRE, by the way, is short for Foundation for Individual Rights in Education. From the organization's mission statement: The mission of FIRE is to defend and sustain individual...

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) - California State University, San Bernardino has refused to allow a Christian group to organize on campus, saying it would discriminate against non-Christians and homosexuals. The Christian Student Association's proposed constitution included a statement on sexual morality and required members and officers to be Christian. State law prevents student groups at public universities from excluding people based on religion or sexual orientation. "We are not permitted to charter them under Title V," said Christine Hansen, director of student leadership and development in the office of Student Affairs. She was referring to a section of the state...

College Republicans Behave Better Than Liberals Letter to the Editor By: Benjamin Woodard Issue date: 12/9/05 Section: Commentary I am going to say something I never thought I would say as a UConn student. I commend the College Republicans. Not for their viewpoints, not for their choice of a speaker, but for how they behaved on Monday night during Cindy Sheehan's talk compared to the shameful display Ann Coulter received at the hands of dissenters on Wednesday night. This is, of course, not to say that I am impressed with Coulter at all. I find her comments, especially those spoken...

SPOKANE -- Gonzaga University, which has rejected recent attempts to bring a Planned Parenthood speaker and "The Vagina Monologues" to the school, now is under fire for the on-campus appearance of a conservative who contends homosexuality is a matter of choice. The College Republicans brought in Dr. John Diggs for a lecture titled "The Medical Effects of Homo-Sex." Some students criticized the lecture in the student newspaper, the Bulletin, as anti-gay and promoting stereotypes. Diggs' appearance Tuesday was intended to foster open debate and inquiry, said Daniel Brutocao, president of the Gonzaga chapter of College Republicans. The speaker focused on...

Young Republicans buck conventional campus wisdom By Curtis Miller In the 1960s, pot-smoking, tie-dyed hippies made up the university alternative lifestyle of an era. Today, staunch young conservatives are looking to find a similar niche on the other side of the political spectrum. In a country run by Republicans, college conservatives are steadily becoming a counter-culture to be reckoned with and more than the footnote they formerly were presumed to be. According to one study from the Harvard Institute of Politics, before the 2004 election, as many as 31 percent of college students were identifying themselves as Republicans, in comparison...

WHAT IS THIS EVENT ABOUT? DEFENDTHEWHITEHOUSE.ORG is sponsoring a rally this September 24th for people who are passionate in their support for economic and political liberty and love for our republic. Extreme views from the Left have seized a level of regard in the national discussion unequal to the merits of their contributions and blind to the disaster of their past prescriptions. These organizations plan to "surround" the White House this September 24. When Kimberly Teplitzky and Geoff Aung attended the College Republican National Convention in Arlington, Va., last month, they avoided talking about political issues with their fellow conventioneers. "We didn't want to scare them away," Teplitzky said. Teplitzky and Aung — who voted for Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) in the 2004 presidential election — are interns at Campus Progress, a new division of the Center for American Progress, a liberal Washington think tank. They were, to say the least, out of place at the GOP event. "We didn't want to give ourselves away right away," Teplitzky said. "But when they...

After Human Events Online posted a July 12 article on the College Republican National Convention (“President of College Republicans Sets Sights on ’06”), the blog CRNCtruthcaucus.com listed the piece as “More bad press.” Why, you might ask, is an unassuming story about the aspirations of newly elected Chairman Paul Gourley considered negative coverage? Maybe the last few paragraphs about fund-raising have something to do with it. An obviously displeased CRNC intern approached me soon after the article’s publication and asked if I’d be interested in writing an “alternative” piece about their field representatives. Gourley himself then offered, more delicately, the...

This past weekend marked the 56th Biennial College Republican National Convention in Arlington, Virginia. While I don't have anything against this convention (where else could you see anyone under the age of 80 wear a seersucker suit?), it seems like all these Tucker Carlson wannabees should be meeting in a different place - namely Iraq. If these College Republicans have enough time to hold conventions every two years (or is it twice a year? I'm too lazy too look up the word "biennial," but it sounds a little gay to me), then they should have more than enough time to...

WASHINGTON - They may be done cramming for exams, but the hundreds of College Republicans who gathered in Washington this weekend are hardly done with their assignments. At a hotel just a few miles from the White House, the College Republican National Committee kicked off its biennial convention with a roster of high-powered GOP speakers meant to rally the fresh-faced troops in advance of the 2006 midterm elections. After all, the College Republicans are viewed as a critical part of the GOP's grass-roots stampede and, as always, the source for the next generation of Republican leaders. The CRNC, which many...

. Stumbling Schwarzeneggerby MARC COOPER [posted online on June 15, 2005]Santa Monica, California A new high-stakes political campaign initiated by embattled California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger that seems destined to become a political battle involving organized labor from coast to coast has gotten off to a stumbling start. One day after he ordered a November 8 special election to pass a series of ballot initiatives, Schwarzenegger was jeered, heckled and loudly booed as he struggled to deliver a commencement address at Santa Monica College Tuesday evening. Several faculty members and at least two dozen graduating students stood with their backs to...
