Man, 21, fatally shot by police on Far South Side By Jeremy Gorner A man on a bike was fatally shot by police on the Far South Side after he aimed a gun at officers, authorities said. A Calumet District tactical team had tried to stop the 21-year-old man for questioning as he rode a bicycle in the 13300 block of South Forrestville Avenue about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, authorities said. Someone had earlier called police about an armed man on a bike, according to a preliminary statement from the Chicago Police Department. Police: 21-year-old man fatally shot Pat Camden, spokesman...

While rioting and racial tension continues in Ferguson, Missouri over the controversial shooting death of Michael Brown there was a ho hum, business as usual, nothing-we-can-do-about-it attitude towards the following headline  in the Chicago Tribune regarding shooting deaths that was probably similar to others across the nation over the week end.   Three people were killed, including a 16-year-old boy, and sixteen others injured in shootings across the city between late Saturday morning and early Sunday morning, police said. The majority of the victims--and most probably the shooters--in Chicago were black; the others Hispanic.  And yet, except for grieving family...

(VIDEO-AT-LINK)FERGUSON, MO (KTVI) – Rev. Al Sharpton speaks at the Greater St. Marks Family Church in Ferguson. Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster is in attendance and gave the opening speech. Koster said, “You have lost a member of your community at the hands of one of my community. Not just the Caucasian community. The law enforcement community.” Sharpton tells reporters before the speech that he is not a “drive-by” activist and plans to be in Ferguson until the Michael Brown case is resolved. He is critical of release of surveillance video allegedly showing Michael Brown stealing cigars. During the speech...

Between 1989 and 2010, Congress rejected nearly 700 cap-tax-and-trade and similar bills that their proponents claimed would control Earth’s perpetually fickle climate and weather. So even as real world crises erupt, President Obama is using executive fiats and regulations to impose his anti-hydrocarbon agenda, slash America’s fossil fuel use, bankrupt coal and utility companies, make electricity prices skyrocket, and “fundamentally transform” our economic, social, legal and constitutional system. Citing climate concerns, he has refused to permit construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, and blocked or delayed Alaskan, western state and offshore oil and gas leasing and drilling. He’s proud that...

The Chicago Blackhawks will no longer play "The Stripper" during their Shoot the Puck contest after hearing from fans who found the song demeaning to women, a team spokesperson said Wednesday. Blackhawks fans recently have been voicing their opinions about the song and a few other Blackhawks practices they deem sexist. The push for change picked up after Marissa Miller, 31, of Chicago, started gathering online signatures Aug. 6 for a petition for the Blackhawks to treat their female fans the same as their male ones.

Homicide Watch Chicago is dedicated to the proposition that murder is never a run-of-the-mill story. Attention must be paid to each one, not merely a select and particularly tragic few. We understand the reality of public’s demand for news - that some stories get more attention than others. But all murders represent a degree of human suffering - direct and indirect - that cannot be ignored. Our goal is to tell the story of every murder in the city, so that together we might fight the tendency to view homicides as just another rising or falling number, like mortgage rates...

Every big-city mayor and police chief in America — including the guys from Chicago — are watching what is happening outside of St. Louis, in the town of Ferguson. Ferguson was once a white suburb. Now it is predominantly black. And it's hurting. A young African-American man, Michael Brown, is dead, shot by police. In the days since there have been anger, rioting, looting and, of course, the politics of race. And the thug behavior of the looters accomplishes something else: It helps lock Americans into various camps from which we're comfortable listing grievances and condemning the behavior of others.

The former CEO of the company at the heart of Chicago's red light camera bribery scandal has been indicted by a federal grand jury. Karen Finley — the 54-year-old former boss of Redflex Traffic Systems — was indicted Wednesday, three months after city worker John Bills was charged with soliciting bribes to help Redflex win the city's lucrative red light camera contract, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting. . . . . . But evidence of unexplained spikes in tickets issued at intersections since then means the red light program remains a political headache for Emanuel.

GAGE PARK — A dognapping in which a Pomeranian named Sunny was held for $250 ended with a woman being arrested and the pup safely returned home after detectives listened in on the ransom call, authorities said. "I just thank God I got my puppy back. When you have a puppy for a long time, a puppy is just like your kid," the dog's owner, a 66-year-old woman who asked that she not be identified, told DNAinfo Chicago. Charged in the theft is Daniela Ramirez, 26, of the 6000 block of South Troy Street, who was arrested Thursday and appeared...
  • 'War on whites'? No way

U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., claims liberals are waging a "war on whites." If so, Barack Obama must be at war with himself. That's how goofy Brooks' logic sounds. But he's not nuts. It is an old reflex, when cornered in politics, to lash back with the same charge others have leveled at you — or, put another way, to project your own flaws onto other people. What's sad about Brooks' claim is his feeble attempt to play the white victim card, plucking the strings of white nationalism, just to have his way with the nation's immigration policy.

President Obama made a surprise video appearance at the opening ceremonies of the 2014 Gay Games in Cleveland on Saturday. Joining Greg Louganis, Lance Bass, the Pointer Sisters, and Broadway’s Andrea McArdle and Alex Newell in celebrating the event, Obama said, “Since 1982 the Gay Games have given lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender athletes and supporters around the world a chance to come together to compete, celebrate, and inspire others.” President Obama, who is vacationing on Martha’s Vineyard, noted how the country has changed since the games began in 1982. “We’ve also seen America change in that time, even since...

Two summers ago a home invasion by gang members on the city's South Side went wrong when one of the robbers shot another one in the back of the head, according to Chicago police. Sixteen-year-old Douglas Bufford was killed, and 19-year-old Jermalle Brown was charged with first-degree murder. His trial begins on Aug. 15, and it may attract more attention than usual in a city plagued by violent crime, just as his arrest did. Why? Because at the time of the shooting, Douglas Bufford and Jermalle Brown were also on the Illinois state payroll, earning $8.50 an hour to hand...

I have been writing for Freedom Outpost for nearly a year and then at the former Front Porch Politics for six months before that. There was a commenter who would always come on and say that no one is coming for our guns, and yet, here we are. The evidence abounds that gun confiscation is the goal and is currently taking place. We first saw it in New York under the NY SAFE Act and then in California. Now we’re seeing it in Cook County, Illinois, former home to Barack Obama. This is why American patriots have warned against gun...

Wednesday, August 6, 2014 Streetlight McCarthy: Concealed Carry Same As Drunken Driving The expert in carrying a firearm while intoxicated speaks: “This is what I said from Day One: More guns is not the solution to gun violence. That’s akin to saying everybody should drive drunk to stop drunken driving. It doesn’t work that way.” So what's giving Chicago Police Supt. McCarthy flashbacks? Something he thinks will be an excuse to restrict Concealed Carry in Illinois. After Wednesday’s meeting at Kennedy-King, McCarthy also disclosed that one of the men shot this week at a North Side nightclub had one of...

Pastor Corey Brooks is a giant on Chicago’s South Side, both figuratively and literally. Standing over six feet tall, the pastor of New Beginnings Church of Chicago is more than just a man of the gospel. To the neighborhood he serves, he’s a preacher, a mentor, a role model, and more importantly, he’s everything that the Reverends Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson aren’t — an outspoken advocate and spokesman for the betterment of the lives of everyone in his community. I first met Pastor Brooks last year when I wanted to get involved in solving the problem of violence that...
