AUSTIN -- Forget Aggie jokes. Cheerleaders attending camp at the University of Texas have provided more than enough funny fodder for the state this summer. Ever wondered how many cheerleaders can fit onto an elevator? We’ll give you a hint: Not 26. But a group of peppy campers found this out the hard way at UT’s Jester Residence Hall. Twenty-six cheerleaders packed into an elevator there, but it got stuck and stayed that way for about 30 minutes. Some of the girls passed out. Others used their cell phones to call for help. Just a few weeks ago, teens at...

A pair of former Ware Shoals High School students have filed lawsuits against Ware Shoals School District 51 and its board of trustees in relation to the district’s employment of ex-cheerleading coach and guidance clerk Jill Moore. The lawsuits were filed on behalf of the two WSHS graduates -- one a former cheerleader, the other a former Hornets’ football player -- by Charleston attorney Lionel Lofton. “This is a civil lawsuit being brought by two former Ware Shoals High School students,” Lofton said Wednesday. Each lawsuit levies four causes of action against the district and its board, including gross negligence,...

CAMP KOREAN VILLAGE, Iraq — Unexpected visitors greeted an infantry battalion of Marines, sailors and other residents here June 6. The service members gathered around the Morale Welfare and Recreation Center aboard Camp Korean Village, Iraq, to see what the fuss was about. Little did they know that five Philadelphia Eagles cheerleaders had just come to visit them. “We came out here to say thank you for all the amazing things you have done out here,” said Laura Jenkins, a cheerleader with the Philadelphia Eagles cheerleading squad to the crowd of service members. “It was mentioned that there was going...

BAGRAM AIR BASE, Afghanistan, May 20, 2008 – Historically speaking, Vikings and Afghanistan don’t have much in common, but all that changed yesterday when five cheerleaders from the National Football League’s Minnesota Vikings pumped up a standing-room-only crowd of servicemembers here. New Zealand army Cpl. Murray Kinnell holds up the “No. 1” sign as Minnesota Vikings cheerleaders Amanda and Sarah cheer him on. Kinnell competed, and was unanimously voted best, in a “touchdown dance” competition during the cheerleaders’ performance at Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan, May 19, 2008. U.S. Air Force photo by Tech. IN the blink of an eye, India has gone from faith, prudence and chastity to ... Brittany, Courtney and Tiffani. On Sunday, a team of Washington Redskins cheerleaders landed in Bangalore to help create India’s first cheerleading squad. According to the Redskins’ Web site, the cheerleaders will “conduct a national audition of Indian women.” The aim of the exercise is to set up a squad of indigenous pompom wielders for the Bangalore Royal Challengers, one of eight teams that will play in the Indian Premier League, a rich new Indian cricket league. “Cheerleading is a unique American spirit and the...

MIAMI -- The Florida Marlins are looking for a few good men. Specifically, very large men. The team is hosting auditions for baseball's first all-male, all-obese cheerleading squad: the Manatees. Organizers said they want "big bellies with the biggest jiggle, big feet with the best dance moves and enthusiasm that will rock Marlins fans out of their seats." The guys will perform at Friday and Saturday home games this season. No experience is necessary. But don't expect to get paid either. The seven to ten men who are drafted will only get tickets to games.

Six of eight Ripon High School cheerleaders were suspended from school for two days over a cheer performed at a football game. The girls danced to a Britney Spears song and lifted their skirts at the end to spell out the school's nickname, Indians. Superintendent Leo Zuber said he couldn't discuss the issue because of confidentiality requirements on disciplinary matters. Parents can appeal suspensions, and Zuber acknowledged he has received one. He said he will investigate whether proper procedures were followed and whether suspensions were warranted. Bee staff writer Inga Miller contributed to this report.

Your rival. Your undereducated, cousin marrying disgusting scoundrel of a rival. Oh, sure you may say nice, cordial things to one another but let’s face it: you are fairly certain that the fan of your rival school I just mentioned is enriching uranium for Iran’s nuclear weapons program. Heck, for the sheer entertainment of it, he may kick puppies down the street and may have gotten saliva on either his SAT, ACT, or ASVAB exams in high school. Some of you got your hostilities out of the way early (Louisville/Kentucky). Even more of you like to Git R Done during...

Cheerleaders who flaunt their wares in front of visiting teams will be banned by the NFL, a news report indicated on Monday. The problem has become cataclysmic. The NFL has sent a memo out to all major league teams, according to CBS NFL analyst Charlie Casserly. Basically, home teams are not permitted to tell their cheerleaders to warm up, stretch, or otherwise do anything in front of the visiting team's bench that might distract the players before the game.

FORT HUACHUCA — The 11th Signal Brigade got a taste of football fever last Friday when four of the Kansas City Chiefs cheerleaders visited them. Prior to coming to the brigade area, the cheerleaders went out to the 40th Expeditionary Signal Battalion field exercise-training site. While out there, the unit showed the cheerleaders their signal capabilities and what soldiers do on a daily basis. The cheerleaders also had the opportunity to try on some of the soldiers tactical gear. “I could not believe how heavy the gear is!” said Ashley, who is in her second year with the Kansas City...

High school cheerleaders must now cheer for girls' teams as often as for boys' teams thanks to federal education officials' interpretations of Title IX, the civil rights law that mandates equal playing fields for both sexes. According to The New York Times, almost no one directly involved wants this -- not the cheerleaders, not the fans, not the boys' teams, and not even the girls' teams. But it doesn't matter: The law coerces cheerleaders to cheer at girls' games. Of all the myths that surround Left-Right differences, one of the greatest is that the Left values liberty more than the...

For all you loony couch conservatives, the General Election is not the time to sit home and cry over not having a choice. If you sit home and the Rats gain the majority in either House, blame yourself. I know I will. A Republican Rino is still better than a Rat. It gives the Republicans majority status. With that status, we control committees and keep the Rats from starting multitudes of witch-hunting investigations and impeachment procedures. Nothing may get done with or without the RINOs, but its better than having the Rats in control. If you don't like the RINOs...

He told reporters Wednesday from jail that he was trying to drive off trespassers and didn't intend to hurt the girls. TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iranian conservatives have called on President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to reverse his decision to let women into sports stadiums, saying it was against Islamic values, newspapers reported on Thursday. Ahmadinejad promised a return to the values of the 1979 Islamic revolution when he was elected last year, prompting many in the establishment to expect rigorous enforcement of Islamic dress and other social codes. But he has been more moderate on social issues than many expected, including saying dress codes should not be imposed by force and, this week, that women should be allowed into sports stadiums for the...

Trustees had been asked to reconsider an earlier decision to remove girls from the squad who did not initially qualify. After a presentation from some of their parents and...

TURIN, Italy - The Dutch oom-pah band had just finished Queen's ubiquitous rock anthem "We Will Rock You" and the crowd was on its feet Sunday night, stamping and clapping. Then the Olympic cheerleaders ran onto the skating oval. Dead silence. Followed by boos. The official cheerleaders of the Winter Games just can't seem to help it. They're not exceptionally good. Ranging in age from 15 to 26, these Italians were hired to entertain audiences at each Olympic venue. They practiced for four-and-a-half months. It just doesn't look like it. They have a lot of heart, but not much rhythm....

It's taken three months, but we've finally obtained a complete copy of the police report detailing witness accounts of what allegedly happened between those two Carolina Panther cheerleaders in the bathroom of a Tampa nightclub last November. The statements, previously withheld by Tampa cops, tell of moaning, "going down," and eyes rolling back into one woman's head as Keathley and Thomas...

I have steadfastly supported our president for his entire administration. I consider myself a patriot, a staunch supporter of this, the greatest country on earth. I looked the other way when he went into Iraq, even though I thought we weren't done in Afghanistan. I gave him the benefit of the doubt that he did not order soldiers to torture Iraqi prisoners, and that his policy in Iraq was one that would minimize and prevent civilian casualties whenever possible. I trusted him on free trade. I believed strongly that tax cuts would send our economy into the stratosphere. I hoped...

By Arian Campo-Flores Newsweek It was a dream come true for Ashley Burns when the lithe 14-year-old with the blue-ribboned ponytail and squeaky voice learned in July that she'd landed a cherished spot on the varsity cheerleading squad at Medford Vocational-Technical High School in Massachusetts. To celebrate, she and a friend got pedicures and tooled around town in a convertible blasting their favorite tunes. One week after joining the team, Burns was at practice, preparing to perform a stunt called a "double down." Held aloft by four cheerleaders gripping one of her feet, she was thrust into the air. But...

Shania Twain and Christina Aguilera might have turned midriff-baring into a televised sport, but the Minnesota State High School League has made sure the state's cheerleaders don't follow suit on the sidelines. The rule, unanimously approved by the league's board in February, goes into effect a year ahead of a nationwide directive by the National Federation of State High School Associations.

A lifetime ago, when William Jefferson was just a plain old congressman, not the central figure in what's shaping up as a major investigation of his business dealings, I sat down to talk to him about one of his pet subjects, international trade. Jefferson kicked it off by asking whether I was familiar with the Central American Free Trade Agreement. Having skimmed a stack of newspaper clippings on the subject, I told him, with utter confidence, that I was. Big mistake. Before long he was off on a treatise about trade deals past, with a particular focus on provisions to...

PHILADELPHIA - Call it fantasy football. Sexual fantasy football. Leaving little to the imagination, the Philadelphia Eagles unveiled their 2005-06 cheerleaders' lingerie calendar this week with a fashion show at the NovaCare Center. The calendar shows the Eagles' cheerleaders with most of the mystery removed, racier by a few provocative poses than the average Victoria's Secret catalogue, and its introduction definitely was not family entertainment. As the calendar picture of each cheerleader flashed on a screen, the woman herself strutted across the stage in high heels clad in fancy underwear - which was still a good deal more than most...

Most athletes don't perform racy routines, coaches say By Dru Sefton NEWHOUSE NEWS SERVICE Sunday, May 15, 2005 Pity the cheerleaders. After all that enthusiasm, and decades of striving to be recognized as dedicated athletes, an old stereotype is back: They're just too sexy. Or so says Texas state Rep. Al Edwards, D-Houston, whose bill would regulate sexually suggestive moves by public school cheerleading squads. It has passed the House but is languishing sponsorless in the Senate. No matter, the damage is done, and the headline writers can't resist: "Whole Lotta Shakin's Gonna Stop in Texas," "Bill Bumps, Grinds Through...

AUSTIN, Texas — A bill approved by the state House to ban bawdy cheerleading routines apparently isn't going anywhere in the Senate this year. The legislation prohibits "overtly sexually suggestive" cheerleading routines at school events and gives the state education chief the authority to ask school districts to review performances. It does not define sexually suggestive. The House approved the legislation May 3 and sent it to the Senate Education Committee, where it is expected to die. "We have some very important work to do in the next two weeks, and that's not one of them," Republican state Sen. Florence...

Politicians of the Texas State House took the time this week to pass HB 1476 which will put an end to "sexually suggestive" performances by middle and high school students. (a) A school dance team, drill team, cheerleading team, or similar performance group may not perform in a sexually suggestive manner at an athletic or other extracurricular event or competition sponsored or approved by a school district or...
