Most dog owners come into the veterinary office with their canine companions devotedly following them. Tails wagging, the dogs look up at their people with adoring eyes. Most cat owners, on the other hand, wrestle a cardboard box into the exam room, reach in like a magician and pull out not a rabbit, but an angry feline. For their efforts they get covered with furry shrapnel and sometimes raked with claws until their face and arms look like so many tic-tac-toe games. (It doesn't have to be like that, by the way.) As a lifetime pet lover and practicing veterinarian...

“Our data suggest that cats were attracted to ancient farming villages by small animals, such as rodents that were living on the grain that the farmers grew, ate and stored. “Results of this study show that the village of Quanhucun was a source of food for the cats 5,300 years ago, and the relationship between humans and cats was commensal, or advantageous for the cats. “Even if these cats were not yet domesticated, our evidence confirms that they lived in close proximity to farmers, and that the relationship had mutual benefits.” Cats have lived alongside humans for a very long...

... a group of cat rescuers staked out a Baldwinsville apartment complex, trying to rescue a group of kittens and their mother from a drainage pipe before the snow storm hit. After two long and stressful days, the rescuers were able to trap four kittens and the mother cat. But right now is the most stressful time for Daugard and other cat rescue groups in CNY. "There is no room for more cats," she said. "Everyone is booked to capacity, there is no more room to take in more rescues and there is no more money." Donations can be made...

It's a sad day in Tennessee as Buddha, the obese cat who became an internet sensation thanks to his workout sessions on a underwater treadmill, has died. The six-year-old cat, who weighed 31.4lb when he was rescued at the start of August, had made good progress with his diet and exercise plan. But when a congestive heart defect was diagnosed last month, the cat was forced to stop exercising and instead moved to a foster home with a strict eating plan. He died last night.

Cats, according to new research, recognize their owner’s voice. They just can’t be bothered to react to it. Researchers in Japan arrived at this conclusion after performing experiments with twenty house cats. They played recordings of the cats’ owners’ calling to their pets in whatever cat-talk voice they typically used. They also played recordings of three strangers calling to the cats, using the same words. To quantify the cats’ reactions, the researchers recorded how often cats moved their head, tail, paws or ears, or whether they meowed or dilated their pupils. While the cats showed a significantly greater response to...

What Would Happen If a Lion Fought a Tiger? We've always been speculating about battles between superheroes. We know the outcome of octopus versus shark. At last we have an expert speculating on lion versus tiger. Which one would win? Since there's a good chance you've spent the weekend slowly tearing apart a ritualistically slaughtered bird, before going out and trampling your fellow citizens in arenas, you probably won't be too horrified by speculating on the outcome of animal fights. After all, the fights in question are, for the most part, in the past. Romans used to pit lions against...

A female lion at the Dallas Zoo was killed by a male lion in front of visitors on Sunday and officials are unsure what prompted the attack. The female lion, 5-year-old Johari, was bitten on the neck by one of two male lions in the exhibit, Kamaia and Dinari, although it’s unclear what lion delivered the fatal bite. Lynn Kramer, the zoo’s vice president of animal operations and welfare, told MyFoxDFW.com he had never seen such an attack in several decades of experience with the animals.

A Japanese company has created Nyan Nyan Nouveau, a non-alcoholic wine for cats. Let's face it, your cat probably doesn't like you. Or need you. But maybe that can change. In the likely case that you're drinking that glass of Napa red alone, give your feline a reason to join you. As Kotaku reported earlier today, Japanese company B&H Lifes has released Nyan Nyan Nouveau, a wine made exclusively for cats. Three years ago, wooden toy wholesaler Yutaka Katayama picked up a camera and started taking pictures of ordinary life in KyÅto, Japan. Since then photography has become an obsession. "It's my life's work," he wrote over email. Katayama has taken thousands of pictures of the legendary ancient city that once was the imperial capital of Japan. He has also found a favorite theme: the stray cats that are found all over Kyoto. "I feel the strength to live from a stray cat," Katayama wrote. "They seem to live a quiet life always looking for food and a place to live...

Dear humans, We can't help noticing that you left for work this morning without leaving a heaping pile of presents next to our food dishes. It also appears you forgot there are no dogs allowed today, and we had to lock them in the bathroom ourselves. We know you're busy with human things, like removing all the hair we painstakingly left on your pants. (Yeah. We know you do that.) But since today is the most important day of the year, we don't think it's too much to ask you to cancel everything and come home immediately. In case you've...
