Walterboro is a small community along Interstate 95. It sits about one hour north of Savannah, Georgia. It is a small town typical of the south. It belongs to a section, of the part of South Carolina, known as the Lowcountry. It is 45 minutes from the ocean and has its own watery areas,swamps. When you think of small town America, Walterboro is a place you may think of. But the last week, Walterboro has become like LA.

Senator Lindsey Graham, the Republican with a maverick streak, has been censured by local Republican Party officials in his home state of South Carolina. The executive committee of the Charleston County Republican Party voted unanimously on Monday to rebuke Mr. Graham “for many of the positions he has taken that do not represent the wishes of the people of South Carolina, such as: passing a ‘cap and trade’ energy bill, bailing out banks and granting amnesty for illegal aliens.” Lin Bennett, the chairwoman of the local party, told the Charleston Post and Courier that party leaders were “fed up.”

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina Gov. Mike Easley is being lauded by the nation's top teacher lobbying group as "America's Greatest Education Governor." The National Education Association planned to give Easley an award Thursday during the group's annual meeting in Washington. The NEA cites Easley for his "More at Four" program for at-risk preschool students and the "Learn and Earn" program, which allows high school students to graduate with a diploma and an associate's degree. Data released by the U.S. Census Bureau today revealed that South Carolina’s Hispanic population showed the biggest percentage increase in the nation. Hispanics now account for 15 percent of the total United States population and remain the largest minority group. The South Carolina Senate is discussing a compromise on illegal immigration. The Senate is now talking about attaching the compromise to a second House bill. That would bypass procedural hurdles and could put the measure before the House for a simple majority vote later this week.
