A slain Staten Island soldier was honored at the Polish consulate in Manhattan Tuesday for his heroic actions during an insurgent attack in Afghanistan in August. Staff Sgt. Michael Ollis, 24, was killed on Forward Operating Base Ghazni in eastern Afghanistan on Aug. 28. When a car bomb exploded near the base and insurgents began attacking, Ollis first accounted for his men and then ran towards the site of the blast and sound of gunfire, according to Polish military officials. During the fighting, Ollis stepped between a Polish officer, Lt. Karol Cierpica, and a suicide bomb-laden insurgent, protecting the officer...

University of Wyoming President Bob Sternberg says he will "find a way" to help students whose veterans' benefits may be delayed as a result of the ongoing government shutdown, so no veteran will need to leave their studies because of political gridlock. Federal agencies have provided enough money to cover veterans' benefits for the remainder of October, but delays are likely if the shutdown continues past Nov. 1, Marty Martinez, project coordinator for UW's Veterans Service Center, said Tuesday. If those delays should affect whether a student could continue paying for classes at UW, Sternberg said, the university will find...

When a tarp was pulled away from a beat-up fire truck the first time Christopher Kolakowski saw it, he immediately reached out his hand to touch it. “It was a very spiritual moment for me,” he said. The director of the General George Patton Museum of Leadership was looking for the first time at what is believed to be the first fire truck to respond to the Pentagon as it burned and partially collapsed after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. He lived about 50 miles from Washington, D.C., at the time of the attack. Foam 161, a foam...

Weighing as much as an eight-year-old child, the jumbo Stag Turkey is 2ft wide and has been reared at Carr House Farm, in Ottingham, East Yorkshire. The super birds are so large, they will not fit in a conventional oven and are normally destined for large catering kitchens in hotels and restaurants. I have a friend and colleague who is moving to Fairbanks next week and he is looking for a pistol to carry in grizzly country. He is an avid outdoorsman and will be hunting up there on a regular basis, but the only pistol he currently owns is a Browning 9mm. He'd thought about getting a 1911A1, but I've pretty much convinced him that a .45ACP is okay against black bears, but is too slow hitting for effective use against grizzlies.

Shelby Foote's War Story How a Memphis novelist’s history of the Civil War made history itself It was supposed to be a brief assignment—eighteen months or so, tops. In 1954, with the centennial of the end of the Civil War approaching, Bennett Cerf, the president of Random House, wrote the novelist Shelby Foote to propose a “short history” of the conflict. In midsummer the author traveled from his home in Memphis to meet with the publisher in New York, and the two came to terms. The target was 200,000 words; the advance, four hundred dollars. For Foote the plan was...
