Gay marriage has been legal in Florida for a month now, and at this point, even the state’s hardcore conservatives seem increasingly resigned to the fact that marriage equality is here to stay. Accordingly, Florida’s more bigoted legislators have decided to turn their ire toward another maligned, disfavored minority—trans people—by proposing one of the most viciously sadistic, hypocritical bills the legislature has ever considered.

he Home Depot partnered with the Council on American-Islamic Relations–a group that has alleged ties to the Muslim Brotherhood–in order to help foster “cultural awareness” among its employees. CAIR is known for its radical agenda and labels any critic of Islam as “Islamophobic.” The United Arab Emirates has gone so far as to call CAIR a terrorist organization for their shady dealings. CAIR issued a release stating that the goal of the training was to educate Home Depot employees on how to better meet the needs of Muslim customers. You can read the full statement below: Picture at link.

Good afternoon everyone. I'm glad we had a bit of interest in a sewing thread. I'm looking forward to learning from you all! I got busy this past week and made the Little One a pair of shorts. Here is a picture: I'm very please with how they turned out considering it was my first attempt at making clothing. So I'm going to make a few more pairs for him in the next size up. A friend who saw them asked if I would make a couple of pairs for her niece's son and I agreed to do that. I...

Welcome to the FR weekly Thread Thread. With a thank you to meowmeow for the suggestion on the catchy name. As I mentioned to some, I'm really a pre-novice seamstress. I'm even hesitant to use the word seamstress. But, with the little guy growing out of clothes SO quickly I figured I'd put some effort into making some of his play clothes. And with 2 years of being a stay at home mom, after 15 years as a professional civil engineer, my brain is in need of some exercise. So I thought I'd start out by posting a couple of...

I've been dabbling in sewing off and on (mostly off) for a number of years. Mostly what I would call simple things like panel curtains, dog beds, etc. With a 2 year old outgrowing clothes so quickly I thought I might try my hand at making some simple items for him. We have weekly gardening threads and semi-weekly recipe threads. I was wondering if anyone might be interested in a weekly (or semi-weekly) sewing thread?

According to a report from the Daily Caller, the Obama administration has been aware of allegations about the VA’s secret waiting lists since 2010: The administration knew that an internal VA investigation into secret “paper” waiting lists was conducted in 2010 under (recently-resigned Secretary Eric) Shinseki. According to an August 17, 2010 VA Office of Inspector General (OIG) report entitled “Review of Alleged Use of Unauthorized Wait Lists at the Portland VA Medical Center”: “We conducted this review to determine the validity of an allegation that senior officials in Veterans Integrated Service Network 20 (VISN) instructed employees at the Portland...

Do you bite your nails? For 30 years, I did. We nail biters can be "pathological groomers" — people for whom normal grooming behaviors, like skin picking or hair pulling, have become virtually uncontrollable. But psychiatry is changing the way it thinks about pathological grooming, and these changes will be reflected in the American Psychiatric Association's DSM, short for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. A new version is coming out early next year, and it puts pathological grooming in the same category as another disorder you've probably heard of: obsessive compulsive disorder, or OCD. This rethinking gives pathological...

The U.S. Treasury Department’s estimated cost to taxpayers of the 2009 auto industry bailout has just taken a $3.4 billion jump. While the $21.7 billion estimate at the end of May was lower than the earlier $23.8 billion figure, now the treasury department told congress it expects to lose $25.1 billion – up $3.4 billion in just a few months, Detroit Free Press reports. The new figure is connected to General Motor’s falling stock price, which some have suggested is being affected by the performance of the Opel and Vauxhall brands. GM stock fell 15 percent between the end of...

My husband and I can run our household without spending more than we make. If our budget is running tight we know how to cut out extras. Give us a day to look over the National budget and I bet we could get it figured out. The welfare mamas would not be pleased, but ask me if I give a damn. Ex-CBO Employee - i bet you can not.. RoosGirl - There's plenty of money coming in to the treasury to pay for essentials; welfare - gone, farm subsidies - gone, food stamps - gone, planned parenthood - gone, aid...

Faced with a diminished drug-development pipeline in the private sector, the Obama administration is starting a federal drug development center, aiming to spur the creation of new medicines. The new National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences will get $1 billion in funding to conduct drug research with the goal of attracting private investors. Federal scientists may go so far as to start human trials if necessary, the New York Times reports. Federal officials want the center to open as soon as October.

Sheyenne Leona Contreras, age 30, who is the president of H&S Drywall Inc, was arrested in Lake County Florida on an Okaloosa County warrant. The warrant alleges that Contreras violated FS 817.568(2)(c) and 817.568(9) while under a subcontract to the US Army Corps of Engineers on the construction of the 7th Special Forces Complex at Eglin AFB. During the ongoing investigation, it was shown that H&S Drywall obtained over $900,000 in payments by submitting payroll invoices and records using stolen and counterfeit Social Security Numbers. While Americans across the country have entered the political game to save our country, moving that proverbial ball of freedom towards the end zone, we’ve been sacked.

The U.S. House of Representatives recently acted to end a national tragedy. According to a recent Harvard study published by the American Journal of Public Health, 44,789 Americans die each year because they have no health coverage. For uninsured Americans, the mortality rate is staggering. In any given year, if you take two Americans who are physically identical -- same height, same age, same race, same weight, even same smoking history -- and one has health insurance and the other does not, the one without health insurance is 40% more likely to die. That’s 122 Americans who die every day,...
