Iowa State Senator Brad Zaun is preparing to announce another bid for Congress, sources close to Zaun tell TheIowaRepublican.com. Zaun was the Republican nominee for Iowa’s Third Congressional District seat in 2010. The Urbandale native emerged from a crowded GOP primary field, but eventually lost to incumbent Leonard Boswell in a bitter general election battle. Last week, Zaun announced on his personal and “Zaun for Congress” Facebook pages that an announcement was pending after the New Year. “I hope each of you had a great Christmas! I will have some big news to announce after the first of the year...

Under Armour, the biggest sponsor of A&E’s “Duck Dynasty,” has issued a statement to TMZ pledging support for the television show. “We have no plans to change our current relationship,” the statement reads. “We are obviously aware of the situation. And his comments are not indicative of Under Armour’s views.” So, Under Armour doesn’t share the views of “Duck Dynasty’s” Phil Robertson, but they’ll continue to sponsor the show nonetheless. Fair enough.

Challenger: Harkin "Tokyo Rose" of al-Qaida DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Republican U.S. Senate challenger Christopher Reed is accusing fellow Navy veteran and Democrat Sen. Tom Harkin of aiding the enemy because of his call to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq on a scheduled timetable. In a taped debate scheduled to air Thursday night on Iowa Public Television, Reed calls Harkin the "Tokyo Rose" of al-Qaida and Middle East terrorism.
  • Nussle offered differing views on abortion

DES MOINES, Iowa (WOI TV5 via the AP wire) Jim Nussle's campaign for governor includes a different stance on abortion than what he proposed in 2002 when he sought another term in Congress. In a recent survey by Project Vote Smart, the Republican says -- quote -- "abortions should be legal only within the first trimester of pregnancy." Four years ago Nussle expressed another opinion on the matter during a taping of Iowa Public Television's "Iowa Press." When asked under what conditions a woman should be permitted to have an abortion, Nussle said -- quote -- "I don't have conditions."...

Bush Backs Off Fingerprinting Mexicans Mar 7, 2:18 AM (ET) By JENNIFER LOVEN CRAWFORD, Texas (AP) - President Bush gave Mexican President Vicente Fox a gift to take home on Saturday: his pledge to exempt certain frequent Mexican visitors from onerous new security checks at the U.S. border. The visit by Fox to Bush's Central Texas ranch, held a year and a half after it was originally scheduled, was designed to lay past disputes to rest. But with Bush eager to boost his standing in the U.S. Hispanic community, the nation's fastest-growing voting bloc, American politics were never far from...
  • (Metalheads) New Iced Earth CD is worth checking out

I just picked up the new Iced Earth CD, "The Glorious Burden". Barlow is out and Ripper (ex-Judas Priest) is the new singer and he is great. Now on to the CD itself. It is a decidedly pro-America album. Topics are predominantly history (Declaration Day, Valley Forge, Atilla, etc) with two post 9-11 songs thrown in (When the Eagle Cries and The Reckoning). The highlight of the album is the 30+ minute "Gettysburg" with the Prague Philharmonic. If you are a metalhead, an American and a fan of epic songwriting, "The Glorious Burden" is highly recommended.

Men involved in shootout here illegally, police say By TOM ALEX Register Staff Writer 01/27/2004 Two men charged in connection with a double homicide, rolling gun battle and attempted burglary in Des Moines on Saturday were in the country illegally, police said Monday. Police Sgt. Todd Dykstra said police have not yet determined where the suspects obtained the gun or how many bullets were fired in the gun battle with police. Investigators refused to release the 911 tape in the homicide investigation. Jorge Perez-Castillo, 23, of Guatemala was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and four counts of attempted...

Immigrant students seek college assistance Students who entered America illegally pay higher college tuition and are denied access to most financial aid. By BRIANNA BLAKE Register Staff Writer 09/05/2003 Esperanza Pintor of Des Moines has been overcoming obstacles her whole life. She came to the United States illegally at age 8 with her family. She had to learn English, work and help care for siblings, but graduated at the top of her class at Dowling High School last spring. Now she will attend Central College in Pella, despite a ban on financial aid for students who've grown up in the...

GOP Targets Pro-borders Tancredo Rep. Tom Tancredo, the nation's most outspoken opponent of the invasion of illegal aliens, is being targeted for defeat - not by the Democrats, but by the GOP establishment. Just last week Tancredo, R-Colo., crushed his Democrat challenger by 37 points. But the moderates and liberals see him as a conservative loose cannon packed with ammo. His "criticisms of President Bush's immigration policy bought him a 40-minute rebuke earlier this year from Bush adviser Karl Rove, who, in the Congressman's own words, warned him 'never to darken the door of the White House again,'" Roll Call...

Citizens for a Sound Economy August 14, 2002 A Conversation with a Conservative There is a widening gap between the values of Washington Republicans and America's conservative base. I have had two very different running conversations this year. The first is with inside-the-beltway Republican politicians. They tell me things are going fine and they’re doing the best they can. The other conversation has been with conservative activists all across America. They tell me how bad things look. They say it appears the politicians don’t care about freedom anymore. Activists get involved because they want to make a difference. They hold...

GOP DISCORD The national Republican establishment's plans to elect moderate Rep. Greg Ganske to the Senate from Iowa may face a serious challenge from the supply-side Club for Growth, which is helping finance an unknown conservative in the GOP primary. Three-term liberal Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin is a prime 2002 target of the Republicans, and private polls give Ganske a reasonable chance against him. Consequently, national GOP strategists are distressed by new backing in the primary for Bill Salier, a 33-year-old hog farmer from Nora Springs, Iowa. The Club for Growth began financing conservative candidates in Republican primaries during the ...

Hi all, As some of you know, Bill Salier is challenging RINO congressman Greg Ganske for the Republican nomination for US Senate. The winner gets to take on Harkin!! This will be one of the most watched races in the country. Bill Salier is a fomer Marine who went to Somalia after requesting a six-motnth extension of his tour to remain with his men. Prior to his service in Somalia, he was with the Marine Presidential Security Forces at Camp David. Tom Harkin and Greg Ganske look across America and see alot of problems that the government can solve. Bill ...

One of the most watched Senate races of the 2002 election cycle will be the race in Iowa to unseat Democrat Tom Harkin. Two candidates have emerged as challengers: Bill Salier and Congressman Greg Ganske. It is assumed by the party establishment and the media that Ganske will be the nominee. A scary thought, to be sure. Especially if you look at Ganske's record. Favors embryonic stem cell research Favors McCain/Feingold Received a D-Minus from the NRA Sponsored Ted Kennedy's Patients Bill of Rights in the House Sponsored the bill to federalize airline security in the House Now, Republicans in ...

Maybe my fellow FReepers can help me out here. I have been listening to all the coverage recently given to the Patient's bill of Rights and a prescription drug benefit for Medicare. I was wondering: Where in the Constitution does it give the President/Congress the power to enact such legislation? Do our elected representatives have a "teacher's edition" of the Constitution with extra amendments in it? I hope this will stir up some discussion.
