  • Searching for articles on modern gunsmithing homages to the Mauser C96.

Okay, I was reading old pulp novels and finishing off the Christmas oranges and I got the idea (Okay, I stole the idea from the book and extrapolated it) to look into seeing what modern gunsmiths (who have access to allows and machine tools never imagined 90 years ago) might do with replicating the weapons most appearing in the books I was reading? I have seen the double barrel Colt 1911 models...but what about the Mauser C96? With modern steel could one be made to fire small rifle cartridges of the period (30-30 maybe?) And how about the Thompson Submachine...

I have been looking for a list of proposed station locations for implementation of Enhanced LORAN. Anybody know where to find that? My searches all wind up with demonstrations of the signals from four or five years ago and nothing newer. I had assumed that it wouldn't need as many stations as LORAN C but I can't find anything about the requirements.

There is a fire in historical downtown Denison. I have done contract work in a lot of the buildings there, and many of them are ancient lathe board structures that burn fast and hot if something like this happens.

I live in North Central Texas. For the last two months, American Bank of Texas' ATM system has ceased to function every Saturday afternoon. They don't get it back up until at least Sunday afternoon, sometimes Monday morning. It is fair to ask, are they insolvent?

An Arizona man claims he was sexually abused 30 years ago by a Penn State professor — and the university refused to investigate his claims. Paul McLaughlin, now of Phoenix, says the abuse began when he was just 11 and lasted from 1977-81, with an education professor and two other predators targeting him. The victim told ABC News that he made audiotapes in 2001 of conversations where Prof. Jack Neisworth admitted performing oral sex on him. “Although I had clear evidence of abuse by this professor, the university refused to act,” charged McLaughlin. “Last week’s arrest of Penn State coach...

You may have heard that there's something rotten on Amazon.com. We have learned that it doesn't end with the company's dropping of "The Pedophile's Guide to Love and Pleasure: a Child-lover's Code of Conduct." Books and videos depicting pre-pubescent Eastern European and Asian girls, some of whom are nude, are listed for sale on Amazon in the U.S. and Japan, as of press time. The listings are disturbing, as you may be able to sense even from the blurred item pictured above...

A Belgian Catholic Church-backed commission has released harrowing testimony from around 500 cases of alleged sex abuse involving more than 100 victims, 13 of whom were driven to suicide. The testimony from victims of clergy and church workers reveals 13 suicides and six attempted suicides "in relation to sexual abuse by a cleric", said the report published by the Commission on Church-related Sexual Abuse Complaints, set up by the Catholic Church. The commission, headed by independent child psychiatrist Peter Adriaenssens, said it had looked into 475 complaints between January and June this year. "Almost every institution, every school, particularly boarding...

One of Portugal's most famous television presenters and a former ambassador were among six men found guilty yesterday of involvement with a paedophile prostitution ring that exploited children from state-run orphanages. The guilty verdicts handed down to TV presenter Carlos Cruz and the five others exposed the truth of more than three decades of rumours about systematic abuse of young boys at the 230-year-old Casa Pia network of orphanages. It was only when Joel, a former orphanage boy, came forward in 2002 and accused some of the country's best-known names of being involved that Portugal woke up to full horror...

My First Week With The Dell Streak Yes, after a couple of years with the iPhone, I figured it was about time I checked out "the other side" and visited Android land. I went the whole hog and decided on a Dell Streak. I figured if I was going to contemplate jumping ship, I may as well do so in spectacular fashion! These are really just my initial thoughts after a week or so with the device. Almost suffice to say I haven't felt the need to use my iPhone once in the past week. In fact, a couple...

An Oregon jury found the Boy Scouts of America and the local scout chapter negligent today in a landmark case that accused the iconic organization of covering up alleged sexual abuse of several of its boy scouts for years. The Boy Scouts of America face charges of sexual abuse by scout leaders. The nine-member jury ordered the organization to pay $1.4 million in damages, and will now move into a punitive phase that could result in the Boy Scouts of America paying a penalty that could reach $25 million. That decision is not expected for weeks. ~ Skip ~ In the...

William Golding, the author of Lord of the Flies, the allegorical novel about childhood, admitted that he had once tried to rape a girl. He confessed to the incident in an unpublished memoir which he wrote for his wife in an effort to explain how his own “monstrous” character had developed. The attack is among the revelations about the Nobel prize-winning novelist in a new biography. It also turns out that when he was a school-teacher, Golding would pitch the boys in his care against each other in a real-life forerunner of his famous work. John Carey, the literary critic...

EVERYONE knew. When the Commission to Inquire Into Child Abuse issued its report this week, after nine years of investigation, the Irish collectively threw up their hands in horror, asking that question we have heard so often, from so many parts of the world, throughout the past century: How could it happen? Surely the systematic cruelty visited upon hundreds of thousands of children incarcerated in state institutions in this country from 1914 to 2000, the period covered by the inquiry, but particularly from 1930 until 1990, would have been prevented if enough right-thinking people had been aware of what was...

To discuss the scandal of child abuse in the Catholic Church without factoring in the role of the Vatican is to miss the main point. Irish Catholics had been told in advance, by Dublin Archbishop Diarmuid Martin in his Holy Thursday homily, that the contents of the report of the commission of inquiry published yesterday would “shock us all”. But we may doubt whether all were sufficiently prepared for what’s emerged. We are set for days of discussion of the different levels of culpability of priests, bishops, diocesan authorities, the institutional Church, society at large. Pope Benedict will likely issue...
