I was in Odessa Ukraine when the banks closed for a few days. No ATM’s, no debit or credit cards. Nothing but cash. Hirivna, Dollars,Euro,Pounds or Swiss francs....paper money!! .And the local cops enforced legal tender laws. As long as police and military are paid in Paper Euros that will be where the scared money goes. The Europeans know their history.

I agree with you 100% The system needs to collapse so that we can wipe out all the bad investments. In fact, I believe we have no choice...deflation is already baked into the cake. And Ryan believes that also. My only point was that by delaying the inevitable until the GOP (scum bag RINO’s and Tea Party conservative all) is in charge of all branches of the Government ( hopefully in 2013) we have a better chance of saving the system of capitalism from a panicked population than if Obama and his commies are in charge.

If you read Ryan’s answer he is a very astute politician who understands what is possible and what is tilting at windmills.....I was impressed with his answer on TARP....that if the deflationary depression hit at that time we counld have had a complete run to socialism. Now, in 2013, when it threatens again we will have the congress and the presidency to take the medicine and time to let the economy heal.

Baloney....The feds have been using taxes to punish behavior since the New Deal. Try buying an automatic weapon without buying a $200 TAX STAMP from the BATF. That was put in ONLY to secure the names of people buying the weapons and punish them for doing so. Has nothing whatsoever to do with “raising revenue”. It’s a stupid argument for us to make.

I’m no lawyer....but I think the decision was narrowly determined that a NON-MILITARY firearm could be regulated....in this case a sawed off shotgun.....but my point was that the TAX was never challenged on the basis of it being a tax. But I could be wrong.

The Feds already require a $200 BATF Tax Stamp to buy an automatic weapon. Nothing about raising revenue about this...it is pure and simple a behavior modification ruse to find out who owns machine guns. And this was passed during in the 1930’s and never challenged because they called it a tax. What’s the difference?

Days past? I just had my knives sharpened by a guy driving around the neighborhood in a pick up truck. And everyday I walk to an open market, where farmers bring in their produce, and buy fresh veggies and fruit. Being armed in a large city to protect yourself is the first rule. But living in a city with an infrastructure of oil refineries, hospitals, transportation, outlining farms and people being innovative to survive is my solution to a melt down. And as long as the dollar remains “legal tender” and the police and the militia are paid with it....shop keepers and farmers will have to accept it. The only way to survive is WITH OTHER PEOPLE, not alone. I was in eastern Europe when the SHTF and I can tell you being alone or out in the country is a death sentence.

I live near Philly. Every week or so I go down to the Italian market on 9th street. I get fresh jumbo eggs for 1.65 a doz. I get fresh veggies and fruit way cheaper than at the fancy grocery stores in the suburbs. And most of the customers are locals who live nearby in poor neighborhoods. This market is in the middle of a lower to poor neighborhood. It’s a myth that poor people can’t buy good food at cheap prices. At least in Philly.

This day’s story about the US and UK combining all food and material productions reminds us that the old statement that “War is the health if the State” is true. The leviathan state that crushes our liberties today is perhaps more a result of WWII than the New Deal. Even necessary wars like WWII have unintended bad consequences.

No. I have never heard of a tourist or a Gringo kidnapped for money. There have been killings of young Americans from time to time...but that was all drug related. The east coast port city of Limon is a known drug stop over point and a few yrs ago a couple of American kids were murdered. But like any port in the Caribbean you have to use caution. San Jose ( the capital) has plenty of rough spots that are best avoided.

It's important to remember that the population prides itself on being descendant from European stock with little inter marriage with the native population. Costa Rican's look and carry themselves very differently from Nicaragua, Panama or the rest of the people of Central America. Actually, the thought of a vicious drug cartel rising up in Costa Rica among the native population is laughable. They are much too passive and laid back for that !!

The odd thing about CR is that the $ is as much legal tender as the Colon. Every place takes it. Even taxi drivers....except they will cheat you if you don't know the rate of exchange.

But Panama has the dollar as the legal currency....so we all go down together there, I suppose.

As far as invasion from Venez....not likely IMO. I doubt very much Chavez's troops will fight once outside their own country. Like the Italians in WWII.

Yes. They love Americans. For example....the Chinese have built a sports stadium to curry favor. But the Chinese workers lived in a compound and didn't mix with the people. And they were rude and hostile. The Ticos hated them, but took their money.In contrast, many retried Americans live there and mingle perfectly with the regular people. English is taught in the schools and the people are the nicest folks you will ever meet. It is not a rich country but it can feed itself. And they are an industrious people who are little entrepreneurs in everything. And the American dollar is still king there !!

You’re right. They have no army. And Nicaragua in the North is always in a bad mood when it comes to CR. The Nicas come across the border to work and the Ticos treat them as illegals. But Panama in the south is very friendly. And well armed with American weapons. Plus we land Marines in the ports of CR from time to time for drug interdiction. And the terrain is similar to Switzerland - not easily overrun. And there isn’t much for an invading army to steal....mostly farm lands and crops. I wouldn’t worry about that.

I do a lot of business with Costa Ricans. Mainly exporting some of their products. I have lived there off and on for over 10 yrs. I know American couples living well - nice, small house in a safe neighborhood, minimal R.E. taxes if any, housekeeper 3 times a week for cleaning and cooking, cheap utilities ( no heat and Air Cond not necessary in most places because of altitude) - with a combined Soc Sec income of $1500 per month. And you get a one time duty free shipment of all household stuff and a car if you establish residency. On the bad side is that the roads are terrible, the infrastructure is not up to US standards....and the people are docile when it comes to petty corruption and lack of services. In ain’t America - but in a melt down here it is a good back up place to hold out in.

Ample food production - fresh water everywhere - Hydro electric power generation - healthy and benign climate - stable government - peaceful population - access to firearms - good medical system - popular culture similar to the US of the 1950’s - very friendly to Americans = COSTA RICA

You may be too young to remember but the left used to show a picture of Nixon laughing like this with the caption “Why is this man laughing?” If I had any skill I would duplicate it and post it everywhere. Especially as the economy tanks this could be worth a million votes!

Every immigrant who brought his "culture" to these shores was changed by the experience. The political and economic institutions established by the original English settlers allowed for this. I read the link. Thanks. But I don’t think it changes my assumption - IF we destroy the entitlement state ALL immigrants become Americans in order to survive and prosper. Just like the English, Germans, Irish, Italians, Jews, Finns, Swedes did before them. Nobody came here AS AMERICANS....the rough and tumble capitalist system made us Americans. I honestly believe that if we return to that our country will be fine. Changed? Of course. But still the land of the free. And the toughest guy on the block.
