The city worker had initially been given a written warning after the head of a dead cougar was cut off while the carcass was being stored in a city facility. A sex worker in Nova Scotia is pursuing a claim for non-payment of services in small claims court, in a case she and her advocates hope will help shift the conversation about sex work in Canada. The woman at the centre of the case said she spent an evening with a client in January 2022. Afterwards, she realized she wasn't going to be paid when the PIN for the bank card he'd given her to withdraw money didn't work. "It feels pretty humiliating to not get paid after providing so much for someone. And it's also frustrating that we don't...
  • Canada set to censor internet porn to ensure it’s 'Canadian' enough

    National Post ^ | June 24, 2002 | Tristin Hopper
Canada could be on the cusp of a bizarre new era in which federal regulators will be empowered to figure out whether our online porn is sufficiently Canadian — and levy the requisite punishments if it isn’t. Bill C-11 — the Liberal push to subject much of the internet to CRTC control — has passed the House of Commons with NDP and Bloc Québécois support. Absent any major revisions by the Senate, the likes of Netflix, YouTube and even Instagram will soon be forced to subject their content to Canada’s famously onerous strictures on Canadian content. But less discussed is...

A young woman in New York had been having health issues for some time and when she finally was able to see a doctor, she was so relieved that she had a brief cry. “She has a rare disease so she’s been really struggling to find care,” big sister Camille Johnson said in a tweet thread. “She got emotional because she feels frustrated and helpless. One tear in and they charged her $40 without addressing why she is crying, trying to help, doing any evaluation, any prescription, nothing.” “They charged her more for crying than they did for a vision...

Now, I do not have time to deal with all the traitors. But gradually they will all be punished,” Zelensky said in a speech. “That is why the ex-chief of the Main Department of Internal Security of the Security Service of Ukraine Naumov Andriy Olehovych and the former head of the Office of the Security Service of Ukraine in the Kherson region Kryvoruchko Serhiy Oleksandrovych are no longer generals,” he said. The EU will freeze the assets of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, as part of a sanctions package set for approval Friday, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell confirmed on Friday. They will not, however, be banned from traveling to the EU, according to four diplomats. "This is an important step," Borrell said in brief remarks, noting that the only other world leaders under EU sanctions are Bashar al-Assad in Syria and Alexander Lukashenko in Belarus. The move comes as the EU faces pressure from Ukraine to ratchet up its penalties on Moscow, with Russian...

What? You expected us not to make a juvenile joke in the headline of this story? Listen, most of us around here are still amused by bodily functions, so this shouldn’t be unexpected. What was unexpected for a Halton Police officer earlier this week was a contractor who failed to tightly secure the trailer hitch ball on their truck’s drawbar. According to a video posted to Twitter by the attending officer, the truck and trailer in question were bounding along Dundas Street when the gendarmes spotted something amiss at the hitching point. Closer inspection revealed the ball on which the...

A music video poking fun at officers sparked a country-wide search within the Royal Canadian Navy for the culprit who made the parody as well as threats to sailors that even watching the spoof would result in punishment. The video emerged on YouTube in February 2020 after news reports that the second-in-command of HMCS Calgary was relieved of his duties after disabling the smoke and heat detectors in the warship’s wardroom so he could smoke. The disabling of those safety systems took place less than two weeks after a fire broke out in the engine room of HMCS Calgary, causing...
