  • Syria's chemical weapons arsenal

There is a degree of panic, and rightly so, over whether the Syrian tyrant Basher al Assad will use chemical weapons against either his own people or foreign attackers. His regime has this week threatened to do the latter, thus finally confirming what was long suspected but never openly admitted, that Syria possesses chemical weapons. It is believed to have believed to have mustard gas as well as nerve agents such as tabun, sarin and VX. The fear is either that the Assad regime uses them or that they fall into the hands of Hezbollah, al Qaeda or other Islamic...
  • Quake hits eastern Japan, nuclear plant stable

TOKYO: A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Japan on Thursday near the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, but did not cause any further problems at the power station, officials said. The quake hit in the Pacific, 22 kilometres (14 miles) east of Iwaki in southern Fukushima, at 12:20 pm (0320 GMT) at a depth of nine kilometres, the US Geological Survey said. A tsunami was not expected, said the Japan Meteorological Agency, and there were no immediate reports of damage. Nuclear plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) said the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant remained stable.

There have been a number of odd happenings recently at the plant. What they all mean right now is not totally clear. On January 2nd, the day after the widespread new years quake, the radioactive fallout levels in Fukushima and also in Chiba spiked. A weird white ash was reported by some in Chiba, no word if this is related in any way. On January 6th the cesium levels detected leaking out of unit 3′s intake canal tripled in one day. We still have no explanation for the rush of police cars, fire engines and two buses of workers to...

On June 23, 2011, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers drastically increased the amount of water released from the Gavins Point Dam into the Missouri. On June 23, 2011, the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency announced that flood waters along the Missouri River at Plattsmouth, Nebraska, south of Offutt Air Force Base, surpassed previous flood records set in 1993 when they reached 36.03 feet. Nebraska City, Nebraska also surpassed 1993 levels with a record 27.79 feet. Intimidating, perhaps, but not surprising to the Army Corps of Engineers who announced Tuesday, June 21, 2011, that they would increase the amount of water...
  • Fence in Pacific to try to corral radiation coming from nuclear plant

    CNN International ^ | April 4, 2011 -- Updated 0429 GMT (1229 HKT) | CNN Wire Staff
Tokyo (CNN) -- Workers at the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant are onto "Plan C" in their bid to stop highly radioactive water from gushing directly into the Pacific Ocean through a cracked concrete shaft, a Japanese nuclear official said Monday. Neither of the first two attempts to fill up the 20-centimeter (8-inch) crack outside the No. 2 reactor's turbine building -- on Saturday by pouring in concrete, and then Sunday by using a chemical compound mixed with sawdust and newspaper -- has been successful. "We were assuming and hoping (that water) would stay in the containment vessel as...
  • U.S. robots aid in Japan relief efforts

Robots may soon be rolling through Japanese nuclear power plants, testing the air for radiation and evaluating the amount of damage to the facilities. Bedford, Mass.-based iRobot shipped four battery-powered robots to Japan late last week to help the Japanese military with the daunting relief effort in the wake of the devastating earthquake and tsunami on March 11. The company, which in the past has sent robots to aid rescue and cleanup efforts in the area affected by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill and at Ground Zero after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, also has six employees in...

DULUTH, Minn., Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Minnesota and Wisconsin set records Tuesday for the lowest barometric pressure ever recorded in the two states, the National Weather Service said. The weather service office in Duluth, Minn., said the all-time low for Minnesota was set at Aitkin, Minn., at 28.42 inches or 962.3 millibar. The previous record was 28.43 inches, or 962.6 millibar, set on Nov. 10, 1998, at Albert Lea, Minn. In Wisconsin, a new low of 28.38 inches, or 961.06 millibar, was set at Superior. The previous mark was 28.45 inches, or 963.43 millibar, set April 3, 1982, in Green...

BP's share price took another 2pc knock, after the chief of the company's oil spill response unit admitted that Hurricane Alex has spread oil inland. Robert Dudley, chief of BP's Gulf Coast restoration efforts, said high seas and winds were to blame for the growth of the slick. • BP said it was still investigating claims by a US freelance photojournalist that workers have been trucking new sand to Louisiana beaches. The new layers appear to conceal tar balls caused by the slick. • Admiral Thad Allen, the US incident commander, stuck to the official target date of August for...

As seas churned by Hurricane Alex thwarted skimming boats, wide strips of gooey oil stained miles of Baldwin County's beaches Thursday on the cusp of the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Following an afternoon reconnaissance flight, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach employees reported that oil of some sort -- be it sheen, tarballs or orange globs -- struck all 32 miles of Baldwin's beaches, and streams of oil were spotted as far north as Wolf Bay in Orange Beach. The post-flight report also noted heavy sheen and streams of weathered oil moving into Mobile Bay off the tip of the...

While some other bloggers and journalists insist that recent winter snows are proof of global warming effects, they miss the fact that models have been predicting less snow in the northern hemisphere. See this 2005 peer reviewed paper: Frei, A. and G. Gong, 2005. Decadal to Century Scale Trends in North American Snow Extent in Coupled Atmosphere-Ocean General Circulation Models. Geophysical Research Letters, 32:L18502, doi: 10.1029/2005GL023394. 241-mile stretch all ice for 1st time since 1995-96 Take a picture of Lake Erie now, and you'll get a freeze frame. For the first time in 14 years, the 241-mile-long lake is virtually frozen over from one end to the other. Earlier this week, the Erie Times-News reported that the lake was 90 to 95 percent frozen. The relentless cold completed the job. Gary Garnet, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Cleveland, said Friday that the lake is completely frozen over, for all intents and purposes. He qualified that by saying satellite images show a small patch off Dunkirk,...

ARCADIA - The cold weather is a shock to many people's system, and an even bigger shock to the state's lucrative orange crop. And after Sunday night's deep freeze, damage reports are starting to come in from citrus growers throughout the state. Growers say that overnight freezing temperatures partially destroyed their citrus groves, but it will be days before they know the extent of the damage. Growers spent Monday slicing fruit with knives to check for damage. "You could get it from a quarter of an inch to all the way through the fruit...you would see ice crystals." Carlton says...

According to the Rutgers University Global Snow Lab, last month had the second greatest December Northern Hemisphere snow cover since records were started in 1966. Snow extent was measured at 45.86 million sq. km, topped only by 1985 at 45.99 million sq. km. North America set a record December extent at 15.98 million sq. km, and the US also set a December record at 4.16 million sq. km. A favorite mantra of the global warming community is that reduced snow cover will reduce the albedo of the earth and provide positive feedback to global warming – causing additional warming. Clearly...

Florida orange growers are bracing for possible crop damage as an arctic blast plunges temperatures to record lows Saturday and Sunday nights. Sleet and snow mixed with rain has been reported Saturday from the Tampa Bay area to near and north of Orlando, the first time snow or sleet has occurred in west-central Florida since Jan. 8, 1996, the National Weather Service in Tampa said. The immediate Tampa Bay area hasn't seen snow since Dec. 23, 1989. While citrus growers fared well on Friday night as temperatures remained above critical levels in the heart of the citrus belt, worries are...

Europeans in the grip of one of the toughest cold snaps in decades are worried about freezing to death in their unequipped homes, as much of the continent continues to experience a Canadian-style deep freeze. Polar wind is sweeping across Europe, from Spain to Sweden, but people in the U.K. are in panic mode as temperatures plummet to -22 degrees Celsius. It's just five degrees shy of a record set in northern Scotland in 1982. The government has ordered manufacturers and other corporations to stop using natural gas so that there will be enough to heat homes. British Prime Minister...

Solar geomagnetic index reaches unprecedented low – only “zero” could be lower – in a month when sunspots became more active. Back on December 12th 2009 I posted an article titled: Solar geomagnetic activity is at an all time low – what does this mean for climate? We then had a string of sunspots in December that marked what many saw as a rejuvenation of solar cycle 24 after a long period of inactivity. See December sunspots on the rise. It even prompted people like Joe Romm to claim: The hottest decade ends and since there’s no Maunder mininum —...

BRITAIN faces months of cold weather disruption according to a leading American weather forecasting company yesterday. The UK and northern Europe are in line for a “colder than normal” January, February and March, said the firm, WSI, which provides forecasts for many top US corporations. Its prediction, which contrasts with the Met Office’s much more cautious winter forecast, came as Britain struggled in the grip of more Christmas travel chaos caused by days of ice and heavy snow. Temperatures were expected to plunge as low as -6C in many areas last night. “The Met Office had predicted when the snow...

The President of Iran has accused Pakistan of involvement in the suicide bomb attack which killed at least 42 people including six senior commanders of the elite Revolutionary Guard. A local rebel Iranian Sunni group called Jundallah or Army of God says it ordered the attack. However, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says both western and Pakistani secret services are implicated.
