Went to the local PO today, saw the flag at half-mast and asked the manager why. I was thinking, oh dear we have lost another good soldier to that abysmal war! She hesitated then said that Obama had ordered the flag flown at half mast to honor the Sikh dead from the temple shooting on Sunday. I was stunned. Did we even fly the flags at half mast in 2009 when that Muslim psychiatrist shot our unarmed troops?

I am homeschooling a daughter this year. She is bright (the mid 120s) and a little Asperger-ish. She loves tech nothing brings her joy like cracking into one of the laptops and repairing it. She is looking at high school and for a variety of reasons she will need to have a portion of her schooling homeschooled. This gal wants to get going on growing up and living and I don’t think that college is in her future. Rereading Charles Murray's book on REAL EDUCATION has inspired me to try to put together a curriculum that includes some education to...

The kids are going with the estranged, who doesnt have the great judgement in the best of times, to do monument visits in DC. So aside from the minor detail of it being over 100 degrees, (Good Grief!) how is it in DC? Power in the city? All the little angels being good? Please tell.

Let's talk washers and dryers. The washers and dryers today have sensors to meet EPA Standards. I want to put a big frontloader washer and dryer in my garage which hardly ever gets too cold. When the plumber looked at the set up he said, you are right, there is no danger of the pipes freezing, however, there is water in all the sensors of the washers (and probably dryers) and that minute amount of water will freeze and ruin the sensor and render the equipment inoperable. I have been thinking about this. Is there a way to find a...

I am looking for links to stories about recycling not working. I seem to recall one of the Scandinavian countries admitting that they did not see any good in it. I had read many stories of how recycling was piling up at waste centers because it was to expensive to haul, and the economy had slowed down. But I cannot find links to show my leftist friend who believes all the fairy tales the leftist have to tell. Thanks fellow Freepers!

My son is in homeschool. He is an experiential kind of guy and is taking couses (some self taught) in tiling, heavy equipment and CDL. I may be able to graduate him as a two year senior with full CDL license. There are a number of other courses I could have him take after highschool, from building post and beam homes, to basic plumbing and electricity, engine repair, to gunsmithing and others. many are available to adults and provided by the private sector. I would love to be able to provide him with a post high school experiential program which...

Young Americans are eschewing cars for alternative transport, leaving carmakers to wonder if this is a recession-induced trend or a permanent shift in habits. For generations of American teenagers, the car was the paramount symbol of independence. But in the age of Facebook and iPhones, young adults are getting fewer drivers’ licences, driving less frequently and moving to cities where cars are more luxury than necessity. Figures from the Federal Highway Administration show the share of 14 to 34-year-olds without a driver’s licence rose to 26 per cent in 2010, from 21 per cent a decade earlier, according to a...

Glen Beck Called the Tax Code Something This Past Week and It was Perfect, Do you Remember the Word? Were you listening? He said this was the term that his accountants use to describe the tax code. The word was not: Evil or dispicable. It was a word that meant entrapment or get you. Please help out if you listened!

Yes, We ARE Entitled to what is rightfully ours “An element in the readjustment of our financial system more important than currency, more important than gold...is the confidence of the people.” FDR Mar. 12, 1933 Last year’s economics columns resonated with some readers, evoking both support and outrage. This year I am moved to consider so-called“entitlements” such as the Social Security and Medicare programs. These days, when denoting such programs, too many pundits and politicians use the word ‘entitlement’ as a pejorative as in “how dare some citizens feel entitled to these benefits that are bankrupting our country?” Even our President...

Our local am station caries Rush noon to three. At about 1:10 there was garble as two tapes were played simotanously. Then an old Obama speech played on and on. Seems though the show was hijacked. Any other places this happen?

Sooooo. Breitbart died. Our premier conservative activist. I notice that he is being branded a Provocateur. Interesting. ___________________________________________ I just learned something: All leftists are Activists. All Conservatives are Provocatuers...for there is NOTHING to be an activist about. But making trouble? That is what high profile conservatives are...

Would privacy and freedom sell well as products and selling points. For example, cell phones and computers with built in privacy and no ability to be tracked. Cars that have no tracking computers in them. Developments without the constant tracking of cams. Would it sell or would it be seen as a non-starter? Companies that can get your house or propterty off of MAPS I know some Eurpoean countries have demanded MAP privacy for their people, so I think it can be done. But would we want it?

OK HDTV Fans. Remember: Time to Purchase a TV HDTV Input please HDTV PING LIST PLEASE 12.02.11 | Chickensoup http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/2815455/posts Found a TV that I thought had terrific color. It mesmeriszes me because of its size and color saturation. It is about 1200 more than I planned to spend and I am trying to figure out whether it is worth it. On the one hand, I haven't done anything fun in a long time, on the downside, it is a lot of monies for me. Here are the specs: Sharp Aquos 70" TV http://www.sharpusa.com/ForHome/HomeEntertainment/LCDTVs/LC70LE733U.aspx With the introduction of the 70"...

We will mostly be watching CDs and downloads, not much broadcast...except for the Superbowl for my son (if I can figure out how to stream it on the net). The big Samsungs often have 3D. Will the 3D affect the regular view? I am looking for a clear viewing set that will manage action I keep reading that TV is changing and I wonder whether these TVs are old technology? How are we monitord in this country? What do we see that is changed? Where have our freedoms diminished? Bureracratic oversight is a big problem and different legislatures certainly suuport it. Our cell phones monitor our every move. Off the bat I think of banking oversight that reports to authorities all transactions. In our state smart meters utitities are required to report unusual usage patterens, Our pharmacies are not permitted to sell cough syrup in more than two bottle sales per three days. The IRS... I dont even begin to understand the ins and outs there on how they control our...

This is a link to the paper's website although the letter is not published on the web: To the Editor: I really enjoyed Doug Davis' editorial. His tongue-in-cheek approach to the Republican Party was perfect. I have always said that you have to be one of the following to vote Republican: cruel, ignorant, stupid, naive, greedy, or traditional (one or both parents were Republican). Education reduces biases and many Republicans just prefer to stay mean and thoughtless. It is easier to stay in the past than to learn new ideas. Arthur Balcom Windham (Maine) Kind note from local (apparently) environmental...
