EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Minnesota's Randy Moss was fined $10,000 Thursday by the NFL for unsportsmanlike conduct during the celebration of his fourth-quarter touchdown catch last week _ in which he pretended to pull down his pants and moon the Green Bay crowd. Moss also briefly bumped the goalpost with his back end before hugging teammates in the end zone after that game-clinching score in the Vikings' 31-17 wild-card playoff game victory over the Packers.

Nearly two-thirds of Americans are overweight and almost one in three Americans is obese, according to the federal government. Who's to blame for America's obesity? Is it bad eating habits or poorly executed exercise regimes? Could the government and the food industry also be to blame? "We're besieged," said Michael Jacobson, director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest. "Wherever we go, we're encouraged to eat junk food." Some say that personal health and well being are a matter of personal responsibility. But the processed food industry and the government know what is happening — and they are...

Security Council, buttressed with surveillance photographs and recorded phone conversations, should remove all doubt that Iraq's Saddam Hussein has developed and hides weapons of mass destruction, in violation of U.N. resolutions. Neither is there any doubt now that the United Nations will lose all its credibility if it allows Iraq's flagrant provocations to go unanswered. On Nov. 8, all 15 members of the Security Council (including Syria) adopted the now-famous Resolution 1441. That resolution...

Last night I attended my son's fall concert at his (gasp) public school. It was presented by all the 4th and 5th graders. On the wall behind the stage was a 30-foot American flag, properly displayed. At the beginning of the program, the principal asked all the veterans in the crowd to assemble in room 130. After some brief remarks, she then asked the veterans to present the colors. They walked in in a line, each one having placed their hand on the shoulder of the one in front. The choir of about 300 kids then sang the Star Spangled Banner, and ...

(snip) Organizers of a recall effort have dropped Madison School Board members Calvin Williams and Carol Carstensen as targets and are focusing solely on Bill Keys. The group intends to delay gathering signatures against Keys until November so that his recall election would coincide with the regularly scheduled spring election April 2, said Bill Geist, a district parent and a recall leader. That would spare the district the cost of a special election, pegged in excess of $75,000.(snip)

Mayor Sue Bauman has joined critics of the Madison School Board's policy on the Pledge of Allegiance. In a statement Wednesday, Bauman said she disagrees with the board's decision. "It is important that Madison residents and others understand that this policy is the Board of Education's attempt to respond to the new state requirement," she said. "It should not be construed to reflect the policy or the attitude of Madison's city government or its residents." Bauman said a better approach would be to let individual schools set policies that "best reflect the interests of the children and families they serve." ...
