College applicants are being rejected for merely following the Alex Jones account on Twitter, a digital privacy expert has warned. Bradley Shear, who runs the Shear on Social Media Law blog, claims one of his clients was rejected from a prestigious college after an admissions interviewer scoured the student’s social media account and found he followed Alex Jones on Twitter. While one of my legal clients (a 17 year old teen) was being interviewed by one of the most competitive colleges in the country he was asked why he was following Alex Jones on Twitter. My client, a teenager expected...
  • Facebook Algorithm Flags, Removes Declaration of Independence Text as Hate Speech

America's founding document might be too politically incorrect for Facebook, which flagged and removed a post consisting almost entirely of text from the Declaration of Independence. The excerpt, posted by a small community newspaper in Texas, apparently violated the social media site's policies against hate speech. Since June 24, the Liberty County Vindicator of Liberty County, Texas, has been sharing daily excerpts from the declaration in the run up to July Fourth. The idea was to encourage historical literacy among the Vindicator's readers. The first nine such posts of the project went up without incident. "But part 10," writes Vindicator...

LAS VEGAS -- Former heavyweight champion Ken Norton, who beat Muhammad Ali and later lost a controversial decision to him in Yankee Stadium, died Wednesday at a local care facility, his son said. He was 70. Ken Norton Jr., a coach with the Seattle Seahawks, confirmed the death to The Associated Press before handing the phone to his wife, too distraught to talk. Norton had been in poor health for the last several years after suffering a series of strokes, a friend of the fighter said.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Pamela Waldron makes $7.75 an hour as a cashier at the KFC in New York's Penn Station, where she has worked for eight years. That's just 50 cents above the New York state minimum wage. The 26-year old nursing student, and mother of two, says she has asked for a raise but her pleas have gone unheeded for weeks. Finally, on Thursday, around lunchtime she joined a protest of about 40 fast food workers who walked out of their shifts, carrying placards and shouting slogans to bring attention to their cause of fighting for higher wages...

I have a good friend who let me know his nephew was, once again, in the hospital this week. He's had a life full of hospital stays and doctors. Poor little guy was born with just one lung and has just one kidney. He's autistic and and has also been recently diagnosed with Tourrett's. His blood pressure is very elevated and they are keeping him in the hospital for awhile.

It’s been a while since we had our last round of creepy Stalinist behavior from Barack Obama, the Great Uniter. “Attack Watch” was just about the most fun conservatives have ever had. It will be a hard act to follow, but the Obama machine is trying.

Dear FReeper FRiends, My son has recently found that out that he has lymphoma. He underwent surgery today and they completely removed one of his lymph nodes. It will be sent off for more tests to find out exactly what kind of cancer it is and how to treat it. It was first thought he had thyroid cancer, however, that's not being considered anymore. I am in Texas and he is in San Diego at the Balboa Naval Medical Center. He was stationed on the USS George Washington and they were underway when he discovered the lump in his thyroid....

For weeks, I've watched it unfold, like an excruciating slow motion train wreck. One that I saw coming from far away, but was helpless to do anything about. I and a handful of others seem to be the only people in the entire country who gave a damn, and worse yet, those who had the power to fix it, who could have saved our country with a wave of a pen, a few written words passed into law, instead facilitated our demise. They sold us down the river, they destroyed the country that I truly believed in my heart could...

As the Democratic primary finally grinds to an excruciatingly messy halt, I keep hearing from Hillary Clinton supporters who vow to cast their lot with Republican John McCain now that Barack Obama has wrapped up his party’s nomination. Honestly, it’s an assertion that goes beyond ludicrous and eclipses disastrous, landing somewhere in the neighborhood of apocalyptic. After over five years of failed policies concerning the war in Iraq (and don’t forget that other unfinished war in the country that actually was involved in 9/11), electing McCain would lead this country beyond the point of no return. If George W. Bush...

Isabel Socías, a wiry, 48-year-old high school teacher with piercing dark eyes, has a firm commitment to Cuba's revolutionary ideals. But regardless of any animosity she may feel toward the United States as a result of her political beliefs, she is visibly troubled by what she has witnessed on television in the last few weeks. As she reflects on the terrorist attacks in Washington and New York that have left nearly 7,000 dead, tears well up in her eyes and her voice quavers with emotion.

Alot of this Florida legal stuff is confusing. But some aspects of the battles — and the public relations skirmishes surrounding them — are fairly clear. Here's one of them: It seems that Gore's top attorney knew, in advance, of the Broward County Election Board's decision to go ahead with a manual recount.Consider this: Yesterday, the two heavily Democratic counties of Miami-Dade and Broward appeared to decide against a hand "recount" of votes. The counties were abiding by a ruling from Florida's Elections Board that a recount can be called only if it is demonstrated that the machine count was ...
  • What's the best way to Freep?

I have a question about the proper way to freep. (I am new.) Tuesday night, there will be a townhall meeting in my city (sponsored by local conservative talk-radio station). The subject will be “Should we change the voting process?” My state voted 60/40 for Bush, but I figure with a subject like that, it would bring out the other side.I thought about printing some flyers to hand out with the “Sore/Loserman” logo that someone did up on another thread (very cool, I might add), but I also think some printed word might be added, as well.
