Well, everybody, I have entertaining news. My Yellow Lab Kate was bred to a very nice Yellow Lab male about 4 weeks ago. Pregnancy confirmed by ultrasound - vet says "at least 7" puppies. Expected whelping date is July 6. Patriotic Puppies on the way . . . This should be a very nice all Yellow litter. Father is 2xGRHRCH, MH and QAA, around 65 pounds and dark yellow. Mother lacks one pass for her HRCH, passed her first Master test easily and has her CGC. 55 pounds and very pale yellow, almost cream colored. Both parents have very calm...

This has to be read to be believed. A group of competitive trail riders, having just completed 75 and 50 mile endurance rides, were evicted from Talladega NF in the middle of the night. Exhausted horses and humans were forced to move trailers out of a pine grove in the dark under threat of fines and prosecutions. The local park rangers were sympathetic, but U.S. Marshals were brought in (no doubt at great expense) to ensure that the rangers caused as much pain as possible despite their personal sympathy. Coming soon to a government function near you . . ....

After the repeat of the first verse, Mr. Weelkes slides through a dissonance into a minor key, then dashes back to major and back to the dominant. Not only is it a musical tour-de-force, it's gorgeous. Enjoy!

Looks like I'm going to be going to Panama City FL on business and have to stay overnight. Unfortunately I won't get to go to the beach! :-( The closest hotel to where I'm going looks to be the Wingate in Lynn Haven. It seems to have good reviews on line. Is this a decent part of town for a woman alone? Inquiring minds would like to know. Thanks!

Fast succumbing to FN-FAL envy . . . but the Belgian FNs have priced themselves out of reach since hubby bought his 30 years ago. I'm looking for a sturdy, accurate, reliable auto loader in .308 Win. (We have never owned a rifle in .223, hubby hated the M16 not just because they took away his M14 but also because the early ones had lots of problems. I have never been bothered by recoil, my deer gun is a Ruger M77 in .308. Besides, .223 would mean another set of dies . . ) I've looked at an FNAR, also...

Sagamore Hills Elementary is a small DeKalb County school, just outside the city limits of Decatur. While it is a public school, it's an old fashioned neighborhood school with a very active PTA. (Full disclosure: a good friend's kids attend this school.) The Children's Museum of Atlanta and Georgia Natural Gas are sponsoring a video contest for local elementary schools. The best video will win $2500 to go towards purchasing musical instruments for the school. Sagamore Hills is one of three finalists. Just got a telephone call from a good friend. Her Yellow Labrador Retriever, Woody, is at the vet with a blockage. OK, I got an iPhone back in November, and have slowly learned how to use it. I sync it periodically via iTunes on my computer, as instructed. Well, lo and behold, at some point it deleted all my calendar entries for 2009. I do not know how this happened, but assume it occurred while syncing it. Anybody got any ideas as to how this happened? It annoys me because I do refer back to calendar entries in the past.

Excellent news today from my husband's 3-month check on his chronic lympocytic leukemia. His "bad" white blood cell count has increased only slightly in three months. He had a surgical biopsy on Thursday, we are waiting for the results now. We hardly dare to pray that the preliminary diagnosis will be wrong, but we will.

Ginnie James, who has died aged 67, was a feisty yet warm-hearted figure, equally at home in the bullrings of Portugal and the racing villages of the Lambourn Valley. One of the high points of her life came in 1961, when she decided she wished to become a bullfighter. Aged 21 she took herself to Portugal, immersing herself in the culture and being taken under the wing of one of the most prominent families in the largely closed world of Portuguese bullfighting (which differs from the Spanish version in that the bull is killed away from the ring). Rome, Jan 2: The Catholic church is placing heavy metal, punk and jazz in hell and classical music in heaven in a musical on Dante's "Divine Comedy" composed by a Vatican conductor. Father Marco Frisina, who directs the Rome diocesan choir and has composed a number of pieces for Italian television and popes, plans to premier the show in autumn here before taking it on a tour of European capitals. According to a report in Tuesday's La Repubblica, Frisina will be using "rebellious" rock, punk and jazz tunes to represent hell while heaven will be described using classical and symphonic...

The Puppy to Be Named Later arrived today via Air Cargo, exactly 7 weeks old. She is, as advertised, a pistol. Very pretty, poised, self-confident to the point of brashness, friendly. She glommed onto me like a little black shadow. All I have to do is call "Pup-pup-pup-pup!" and she's there like a shot. Shelley-the-Lab is pretty o.k. with all this. We have had two "border incidents" - the puppy went galloping across the kitchen to shove her head in the water bowl while Shelley was drinking, and drew a snarl and a nip. Clad in black robes, judges of all stripes paraded through a downtown Atlanta church Thursday to receive a blessing of peace and justice. Federal bankruptcy magistrates strode alongside Superior Court judges at the annual "Red Mass" ceremony, an ancient service that dates to the Middle Ages. The service was billed as an interfaith celebration, and afterward the Catholic hosts gave awards to a Jewish judge and Protestant attorney for their work. But the ceremony was not without a heavy political undertone. judges to re-examine the death penalty and called for a ban on embryonic stem cell research. Of abortion, he...

Gregory, who had been serving as bishop in Belleville, Ill., will become Atlanta's sixth archbishop. "I welcome the opportunity to serve the people of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. As a newly-minted Catholic, I'm turning to Catholic musicians and singers for help. I'm now a "rotating cantor" in my church, about every fourth Sunday. I'm expected to lead the psalm and also provide a solo as an offertory anthem on Sundays when the choir doesn't sing two anthems. So far, I've had good luck using hymns and sacred solos that recall or elaborate on the Gospel for the day, drawing on my "English tradition" and 23 years in my former choir with a director who almost always managed to link the music with the Lectionary for the day.
