German candymaker Haribo, famous for its fruit-flavored gummy bears, plans to build its first production facility in the United States and start making confectionery there from 2020. Family-owned Haribo, which employs 7,000 people worldwide at 16 sites in ten countries, said on Thursday it has decided to acquire property in Wisconsin for the factory. Haribo, a model of Germany's successful "Mittelstand" firms which make up the backbone of Europe's largest economy, was founded in 1920. It gave Germany one of its most famous advertising slogans, promising to make kids and adults happy.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Thursday that he wants to see "very significant" tax reform passed before Congress' August recess, in what could prove a tough task as lawmakers work through a complex agenda. "We want to get this done by the August recess. We've been working closely with the leadership in the House and the Senate and we're looking at a combined plan," he told CNBC in his first television interview since assuming office. President Donald Trump has repeatedly made pledges for tax reform and regulatory cuts since he took office, creating optimism among business executives and investors. So...

When Obama took office, the U.S. ranked sixth in economic freedom. Heritage's 2017 Index of Economic Freedom just revealed that the U.S. is now seventeenth, it's lowest score ever. Luckily, America has been given a unique opportunity to move away from Obama’s failed policies and toward an agenda that strives to restore economic freedom and spur growth. WARSAW Poland's state-run defense firm PGZ has signed a memorandum of understanding with French military shipbuilder DCNS that could allow them to work together on building submarines in Poland, PGZ said in a statement. The agreement marks an improvement in relations between Poland and France after Warsaw last year canceled a preliminary $3.4 billion helicopter deal with France's Airbus, a decision which has angered Paris."The signed agreement guarantees PGZ and the shipyards owned by PGZ ... a possibility to co-operate on building submarines in Poland," PGZ's Chief Executive Arkadiusz Siwko said in a statement published by the company. Both sides expressed their...

And now for something completely different in an election season dominated by Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump—a political ad starring "Dead Abe Lincoln" telling voters they "just got screwed" by the two-party system. "What Abe Lincoln prophesied about Trump and Hillary," created on a shoestring budget by viral video mavens the Harmon Brothers, touts Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson in a push to have the former New Mexico governor included in the upcoming presidential debates. Funded by Alternative PAC, a Johnson supporter, the five-minute video also promotes a movement called Balanced Rebellion, which, Abe says, "is like Tinder but not gross,"...
  • 3 Things Reagan Said About Trade That Apply Today

The Heritage Foundation ^ | July 29, 2016 | Owen Morgan, Bryan Riley
Ronald Reagan was an advocate of free trade throughout his presidency. But just like today, many Americans in the 1980s opposed free trade and pushed for measures that would keep the nation out of the global economy.Fortunately, Reagan argued persuasively in support of trade, and his success led to rapid growth in the U.S. economy. He knew that protectionist policies might benefit some industries, but they hurt others. When the government gets involved in trade, special interests get a chance to game the system. These groups excel at making it hard to tell how their policies harm Americans. In his 1987 economic report,...

Two years after Russia’s annexation of Crimea and invasion of the Donbas region, Ukraine remains a nation in peril. Russia considers its annexation of Crimea a fait accompli, has taken steps to consolidate its position in the Black Sea, and has created a frozen conflict in eastern Ukraine. Despite an official cease-fire, war is a day-to-day reality in the Donbas region, and Crimea remains under Russian occupation. Ukraine’s economic reforms remain incomplete; corruption continues to be a virulent and hardy foe. The U.S. needs to stay engaged in Ukraine. This means implementing policies that help the Ukrainians to defend themselves...

Millions of people around the world are emerging from poverty thanks to rising economic freedom. But by sharp contrast, America's economic freedom has been on a declining path over the past decade.America's declining score in the index is closely related to rapidly rising government spending, subsidies, and bailouts.According to the 2016 Index of Economic Freedom, an annual publication by The Heritage Foundation, America's economic freedom has tumbled. With losses of economic freedom in eight of the past nine years, the U.S. has tied its worst score ever, wiping out a decade of progress. The U.S. has fallen from the 6th freest economy...

On June 6, 2012—the 68th anniversary of D-Day—a statue of Maj. Dick Winters was unveiled in the Normandy village of Sainte-Marie-du-Mont. Winters was the commander of Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division after they parachuted into Normandy on June 6, 1944. His heroism and leadership was documented in the Stephen Ambrose book and mini-series "Band of Brothers". A young student named Jordan Brown—who lives just a few miles from Winters' Pennsylvania home—raised $99,000 selling armbands stamped with a phrase Winters used: "Hang Tough." The money was used to help pay for the statue of the late Mr....
  • U.S. firm blames Russian 'Sandworm' hackers for Ukraine outage

U.S. cyber intelligence firm iSight Partners said on Thursday it has determined that a Russian hacking group known as Sandworm caused last month's unprecedented power outage in Ukraine. "We believe that Sandworm was responsible," iSight's director of espionage analysis, John Hultquist, said in an interview. The conclusion was based on analysis of malicious software known as Black Energy 3 and KillDisk, which were used in the attack, and intelligence from "sensitive sources," he said. The Dec. 23 outage at Western Ukraine's Prykarpattyaoblenergo cut power to 80,000 customers for about six hours, according to a report from a U.S. energy industry...

Ukrainian human rights activists believe that over 87 percent of Ukrainian soldiers and half the civilians who have been taken prisoner by Kremlin-backed, pro-Russian militants in the Donbas have been subjected to torture or ill treatment. Additionally, in over 40 percent of the so-called "interrogations," key roles were played by mercenaries from the Russian Federation or by people who identified themselves as Russian military personnel. The coalition Justice for Peace in Donbas has just released a report entitled "Those Who Survived Hell." The study is based mainly on a survey of 165 people, both soldiers and civilians, who were held...

Abstract The impact of free trade on America is regularly the subject of contentious debate both on Capitol Hill and in the media. Questions and uncertainties abound: What is free trade? It didn’t take long, after Russia began its anti-terrorist bombing campaign, for social media to be flooded with ‘evidence’ of civilian casualties. The claims were readily repeated by Western mainstream media. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that it conducted 20 sorties on the first day of the Syrian operation and bombed eight targets in Syria, including weapon and fuel depots and command centers of the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) group. All targets were far from urban areas, the ministry stressed. Virtually simultaneously, reports started surfacing on social media claiming Russia is not attacking terrorists. Instead, it’s claimed Russian warplanes...

In a wide-open friendly that produced a barrage of chances, poor defending and a stunning finish, the U.S. men’s national soccer team scored twice in the closing moments to shock the sixth-ranked Netherlands, 4-3, on Friday at Amsterdam Arena. Danny Williams scored the equalizer in the 88th minute and Bobby Wood broke the deadlock in the 90th as the Americans overcame a 3-1 deficit in the last 20-plus minutes to produce one of the greatest away victories in the program’s recent history. It also marked the first time the United States has defeated the Netherlands in five meetings (1-4-0). Dutch...
  • Ukraine: Which way to Europe and for Europe? [to Russia, of course]

The Ukraine crisis served as a trigger for a broader crisis in the West-Russia relationship. Today, a year and a half after it started, what are the stakes and the bets? Firstly, the declared objective of the EU’s Ukraine policy is to have it firmly integrated in a Greater Europe, represented by the EU. Thus, it would influence Russia’s development in the right direction. We have no problem with that, all the more so that Ukraine’s transformation is long overdue and in everybody’s interest. But why acting secretly and unilaterally, rather than openly and multilaterally? We had always been told...
