Minnesota’s Department of Commerce dealt a blow to Canadian pipeline-maker Enbridge with a report that said the replacement of the Line 3 pipe that runs through the state is unnecessary, as is the pipe itself. Line 3 brings in crude from Canada to a terminal in Wisconsin and passes through northern Minnesota. Enbridge plans to replace the pipeline, which was built in the 1960s, with a new, extended one. This will cost some US$6.5 billion, but environmentalists and the state government believe it will threaten water resources in the area.

Suburban housing construction has ground to a halt in Northern Virginia, according to county officials from the region, due to a law that changed the state's proffer system. "New home development has slowed across Northern Virginia since new rules kicked in last summer limiting what public infrastructure developers were allowed to pay for as part of new construction projects," reports Max Smith. That assessment was delivered by elected officials from around the region attending a meeting on the subject earlier this week. Officials from Loudon, Fairfax, and Prince Williams counties agree that housing construction has slowed since the law took...

SEATTLE - Amazon's announcement Thursday that it's looking to base a second headquarters in new North American location garnered quick reaction from leaders across the state. While the company said that it plans to keep its Seattle space, it will spend more than $5 billion to build another "full equal" headquarters that will house as many as 50,000 employees. Cities and states have a month to apply, and the company will make a final decision next year. Seattle Mayor Ed Murray speaks at a news conference at City Hall Wednesday, June 14, 2017, in Seattle. Prime Minister Theresa May has asked US President Trump to help broker a deal in a bitter aerospace trade dispute which could financially devastate one of Northern Ireland's biggest employers. Canadian aerospace giant Bombardier, which employs around 4,500 people in Belfast and accounts for 10% of the region's manufacturing exports, is facing significant costs in a spat with US aeronautics powerhouse Boeing. The dispute centres over Boeing's allegations that Bombardier received subsidies allowing it to sell its CSeries planes at below-market prices. The US Department of Commerce is expected to announce a decision on whether to impose duties against Bombardier...

There are milestones in life – personal, educational, religious – these may be birthdays, school graduations, wedding anniversaries, baptisms and first communions and bar mitzvahs. So many personal dates to remember – but they are worth remembering, because they are so meaningful to us. Even the sad ones are worth remembering; the day we lost a friend or family member to cancer or accidental death, or old age. By the same token, there are milestones in history. The date of a declaration of war or of the peace treaty that ended it; the day our Founding Fathers signed our Declaration...

Oracle Corp. is hiring another 5,000 employees for its cloud software business as it fights Salesforce.com Inc. for market share in the fast-growing industry. The hiring surge aims to beef up what’s already Oracle’s fastest-growing business, increasing revenue by 58 percent in the quarter it reported June 21 compared with a year earlier. The move is the latest in a back-and-forth between Oracle and its main rival that last week saw Salesforce Chief Executive Officer Marc Benioff bragging he was on track to generate $10 billion in cloud revenue this year, a goal Oracle was trying to hit first. It...

Content marketing is one of the best ways that you can bring new customers to your eCommerce store. A number of people have argued over the past few days that Hurricane Harvey will NOT boost the US housing market. As if any such argument would or should be required. Hurricane Irma will not provide any such boost either. News about the ‘resurrection’ of New Orleans post-Katrina has pretty much dried up, but we know scores of people there never returned, in most cases because they couldn’t afford to. And Katrina took place 12 years ago, well before the financial crisis. How do you think this will play out today? Houston is a rich city, but that doesn’t mean...

Employers in Hamilton County were struggling to find workers in the fall of 2015, back when the county’s unemployment rate was 3 percent—a rate that’s easily within the realm of what experts consider “full employment.” But today, the situation is even worse (or better, depending on your perspective). In July—the last month for which data is available—the county’s unemployment rate had dropped to 2.8 percent. And it has been even lower recently—it was 2 percent in April, the lowest monthly rate seen since 2001. That’s made filling open jobs—both existing ones and the thousands of new ones being added across...

All the Raisinets in the world aren’t enough to sugarcoat this fact: In recent months, the Hollywood box office has been a disaster. In terms of attendance, Tinseltown just wrapped up its worst summer at the box office in nearly a quarter-century. That means theaters now have to fight harder than ever to get butts in seats. “For a very long time, movie theaters were not overly focused on pleasing the consumer,” says Eric Handler, a media analyst at MKM Partners. But in recent years, he says, theater owners have wised up to a novel idea: making the theater experience...

A couple years ago, I bought the best-fitting pair of running shoes I’ve owned in a decade. This is significant because I have rather oddly shaped feet and the break-in process for shoes can be uncomfortable. This pair was different because I was able to search through dozens of shoe models on a website, following directions to determine the best fitting shoe. I was able to purchase a ready-made shoe at a reasonable price. They fit wonderfully. These shoes were available because a relatively free market allowed engineers in one country to design the shoes, workers in another country to...

Amazon is planning to build a second headquarters that could measure up to 8 million square feet — and create 50,000 jobs, many of which pay $100,000 or more. The company is calling the second site "HQ2." It is asking cities to bid on the project, which is expected to cost $5 billion to build and operate. Amazon is prioritizing metropolitan areas with at least 1 million people. “We expect HQ2 to be a full equal to our Seattle headquarters,” Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said in a statement. “Amazon HQ2 will bring billions of dollars in up-front and ongoing investments,...

A resident of my city of Pacific Grove recently did a huge service on Facebook by linking to a site that gives pay and pensions for state and local government workers. It's breathtaking. Question: Who received the highest pension in 2017 and how much was it? Answer: Ronald D. Miller. $366,529.20. Mr. Miller was on the teaching faculty at the University of California, San Francisco. The 7th highest pension, by the way, was received by someone I know and like: Richard W. Roll, the well-known finance professor at UCLA. So this is not a gotcha. It's simply pointing out...

Gov. Scott Walker today announced WEDC is providing Gold Standard Baking Inc. with up to $575,000 in tax credits to support the Illinois company’s expansion in Kenosha County – a project expected to create 96 jobs. In addition to the 96 jobs expected to be created by Gold Standard Baking, an economic modeling study estimates the expansion could indirectly generate 75 additional jobs in the region. Those 171 new jobs could generate up to $1.6 million in state income tax revenue over a five-year period. The new 200,000-square-foot facility in Pleasant Prairie, which opened in July, is expected to operate...
