April 12 (Bloomberg) — More Americans than forecast filed claims for jobless benefits last week, a sign the pace of improvement in the labor market is slowing. Jobless claims increased 13,000 in the week ended April 7 to 380,000, the highest since Jan. 28, the Labor Department reported today in Washington. The median forecast in a Bloomberg News survey called for 355,000 claims. The number of people on unemployment benefit rolls and those receiving extended payments declined. On a non seasonally adjusted basis, oops! On the positive side, continuing jobless claims dropped on a SA basis. As my friend Rebel...

CLICK THE ARTICLE FOR THE VIDEO The video, which had just over 600 views since it was posted in Oct. 2010 on YouTube, has Obama, U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, former Michigan Gov. The failure of high profile “green energy” firms with the loss of hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars has made national headlines in recent months. Companies like Solyndra, Beacon Power and Solar Trust have become household names as a result. Less well-known are similar failures right here in Michigan, costing state taxpayers millions. Ironically, the state government agency responsible for much of this waste has created a one-stop source documenting the hype and failed promises that have become the hallmark of such adventures. Michigan Advantage is the (now-defunct) YouTube channel for the Michigan Economic Development Corp. The intention is to...

A few weeks ago, news broke that Trayvon Martin’s mother had applied to trademark the phrases “Justice for Trayvon” and “I Am Trayvon.” The news seemed to garner a mixed reaction. Some people found it slightly distasteful, while others saw it as both a way for a woman to gain any kind of restitution following an unspeakable tragedy as well as stopping others from misusing her son’s memory. Now, news has broke that some guy completely unrelated to the case has trademarked the phrase “I believe you Zimmerman.” In response to this news, some people found it to be a...

The real Vladimir Ilyich Obama stands up As part of his fantasy "deficit reduction" plan, Barack Obama proposed a number of new taxes. One of them was the so-called "Buffett Rule." When it was initially proposed, it was part of the plan to reduce the deficit. 'Buffett rule'President Obama "Middle-class families shouldn't pay higher taxes than millionaires and billionaires," he said. "It's hard to argue against that." Although negotiations over a package of tax increases and a proposed casino collapsed Monday night, the Maryland General Assembly passed a lot of bills this session — 791, to be exact. Of those, 96 percent were passed in the last week, including hundreds in the hours and minutes before midnight on Monday. Here are some highlights from the 90-day session’s last day: STORMWATER FEE The Senate spent much of the session’s waning hours fiercely debating a stormwater fee bill that was on few people’s radar earlier in the session. The bill requires localities to fund projects to reduce polluted runoff...

He did NOT announce any trial program or agreement with the Obama Administration about using Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to salvage the housing market. But he did say that an announcement will be out in a few weeks. As I said at Brookings, we have very little empirical evidence (other than anecdotal stories) that principal reductions work. Given the difficulty of estimating economic data it is common practice for government agencies to announce a preliminary number subject to later revision. While General Motors’Chevy Volt assembly workers are sidelined for five weeks (and more this summer) because demand for its strongly hyped electric car is weak, the prospects for its chief rival – Nissan’s Leaf – are shaky at best. Nissan North America, Inc. – a subsidiary of its Japanese parent – is the beneficiary of a $1.4 billion Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturingloan from the U.S. Department of Energy, to convert a plant in Smyrna, Tenn. to produce the Leaf and batteries for it. The project’s promoters say the alterations will lead to 1,300 new jobs, enabling Nissan to produce...
  • Penalizing for not buying insurance is not a burden, but insisting on free ID to vote IS a burden

The Obamacare individual mandate demands that everyone have insurance coverage and penalizes those who do not carry insurance. The fine for not purchasing health insurance under PPACA is $95 per person in 2014 (or 1% of taxable income, whichever is greater), $325 in 2015 (or 2%), and $695 in 2016 (or 2.5%). Thereafter, the mandate is indexed to inflation. But hold on, there are exemptions: In addition, many people are exempted from the mandate, such as those for whom premiums exceed 8 percent of household income. Hence, as premiums increase, more and more people will be exempted from the...

The U.S. government yesterday took the next step towards partly financing environmental cleanup projects in China. As U.S. Trade & Aid Monitor previously reported, the U.S. Trade & Development Agency (USTDA) last month issued a Scope of Work related to a series of groundwater remediation initiatives in China—projects for which that nation intend to infuse (USD) $5.5 billion of its own money through 2020 (Monitor, March 16). Nonetheless, USTDA awarded a $44,000 contract to Ascendant Program Services, LLC, a Bethesda, Md.-based infrastructure consulting firm, to embark upon a "definitional mission," or DM, to China. (Contract award #USTDA-CO201261140). Despite the seemingly...
  • Kabuki: Arby’s fakes a Rush Limbaugh advertising protest

Last night, I linked to the story about Arby’s blocking conservatives on Twitter for protesting the company’s protest of conservative talk show giant Rush Limbaugh. Today, the Right Sphere notes that Arby’s president is a big Democrat donor. Here’s the bottom line on this latest manufactured attempt by the Hush Rush mob to make it appear that he and the radio stations that carry his show are suffering economic harm because of Soros monkey-directed pressure. It’s complete bull. Total Kabuki theater. Arby’s is not and has not ever been a national sponsor of Rush’s program. In the radio industry, advertisers can buy...
  • BLS: Employment to Population Ratio Falls to 58.5%, Teen Unemployment Going “Spanish”

According to the BLS, employers in the U.S. added fewer jobs than forecast in March. The 120,000 increase in payrolls , the fewest in five months, followed a revised 240,000 gain in February. Expectations were for 205,000. My ex-colleague from Deutsche Bank, Joe LaVorgna, called for +250,000. Unemployment fell to 8.2%. And U6 unemployment fell to 14.5%. Still, 14.5% is still numbing. But the most revealing employment rate, the employment to population ratio, fell to 58.5%. That means that the nonemployment ratio rose to 41.5%. And 164,000 Americans quit looking for work. And teen unemployment rose to 25%! But that...

For several years now I have been sounding the alarm that if you want to be engaged in the financial markets you need to assume that markets are being managed (rigged) more aggressively than at any moment in any of our lives. The Bernank and others on Wall Street and the District of Criminals understand that the situation is pretty much hopeless.

I keep hearing statements about how expensive it is to prep. Although it is not cheap it doesn’t have to be that expensive either. You do not need to stock 20 years worth of food to be properly prepared. As a matter of fact I would advise against it. Stockpiling a large food and water supply means you have to stay put and defend it. That may not be your best option in a lot of scenarios which means you would lose that investment. Do you think you really have enough ammo to defend a 20 year food supply for...
  • Nonfarm payrolls should fall by 377,000 (But they won’t)

Let’s play “guess the nonfarm payrolls.” After all, our guess is as good as the conomists’, whose forecasts nicely fit a random distribution of hits and misses month in and month out. My guess? The headline non farm payrolls number would be reported as a drop of 337,000 tomorrow if you believe the withholding tax data for the period covered by the survey. That would be a huge miss versus the consensus estimate of a gain of 201,000 according to Hizzoner the Mayor’s tout sheet. Rupert Hacker Murdoch’s rags are even more bullish, posting an expected gain of 210,000. The...

Deficit Hawk: a slang term used for politicians that place great emphasis on keeping the federal budget under control. Liberals only use this term for politicians that want to raise taxes. Deficit Chicken Hawk: a slang term used for politicians that claim to place great emphasis on keeping the federal budget under control but when faced with making real cuts in government spending always back down. Liberals only use this term to describe anyone who won’t raise taxes. President Obama displays a special kind of shallow, transparent, political opportunism when recently talking about deficits to the writers for financial...
