David Knight couldn't look at the salmon entree, the chocolate mousse or the strawberry tarts at the conference luncheon. He had to address a crowd of Montreal educators and he was nervous. Eating would give the former bullying victim-turned activist a bout of stomach cramps - the kind he used to get as a teenager, when he had to return to high school after lunch and face his tormenters. Now 21, Knight is wiry and stands more than six feet tall. He has a steady girlfriend and loves fixing up old cars. He's wearing jeans and a pin from Canada's...

E-mail Author Author Archive Send to a Friend Version March 22, 2006, 7:35 a.m. Right on the Couch Are conservatives nuts? Remember the cocky, arrogant kid in nursery school, the one who always thought that he had all the answers and that he could do whatever he wanted, and was always ignoring what the teacher had to say? Chances are this bully grew up to be a conservative. Right now, I have no doubt that some liberal readers are nodding their heads and saying, "Yes! That makes total sense. Conservatives are such bullies!" Well, according to the latest "scientific"...

TEHRAN, Iran - Iran's president lashed out Wednesday at the United States and vowed to resist the pressure of "bully countries" as European nations circulated a draft resolution urging that Tehran be brought before the U.N. Security Council for its nuclear activities. In a speech to thousands of supporters hours after President Bush's State of the Union address, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad derided the United States as a "hollow superpower" that is "tainted with the blood of nations" and said Tehran would continue its nuclear program. "Nuclear energy is our right, and we will resist until this right is fully realized,"...

My rookie officers were third division, says 'bully' skipper By Stewart Payne (Filed: 17/01/2006) A submarine captain accused of bullying his officers told a court martial yesterday that some were so inexperienced it was like having lower division footballers on a Premiership pitch. Capt Robert Tarrant, 44, who was commander of the nuclear submarine Talent, told a court martial that he expected the very highest standards from his crew. He said he used a leadership style he had learned serving in the Falklands conflict. "I discovered that the margin of error between operational safety and therefore operational success and operational...

WINNIPEG - A teacher who punished four accused bullies last winter by making them wear helmets proclaiming "bullies are losers" will not be disciplined, says the Pine Creek School Division. The decision has infuriated the mother of at least one of the boys. Brandy Strong, who said she got a letter from the school division on the matter Thursday, said her 10-year-old son Clay has been prone to outbursts of anger since the hazing at Langruth Elementary School last February. "Nothing ever happened," said Strong. "The teacher, she never got suspended. She didn't even get penalized or written up on...

The case of John Bolton is about politics (unhousebroken conservatives must be stopped), payback (you tick me off, I'll pick you off) and personality. People who have worked with him allege he is heavy-handed, curmudgeonly and not necessarily lovably so. I don't know him, but I suspect there's some truth in it. Do the charges disqualify him to serve as American ambassador to the United Nations? If reports of his behavior are true--he is tough, pushes too hard, sends pressuring e-mails and may or may not have berated a coworker as he threw paper balls at her hotel door--the answer...

BOSTON -- New York Yankees right fielder Gary Sheffield got into a brief scuffle with a fan at Fenway Park during Thursday night's game against the Boston Red Sox. Sheffield was fielding Jason Varitek's two-run triple along the right-field fence in the eighth inning when a fan swung a short uppercut in his direction, appearing to graze the side of the slugger's face with his right arm. After Sheffield picked up the ball, he shoved the fan before throwing the ball back into the infield. Then he whirled around with a cocked fist, but restrained himself and began shouting in...

I’m not proud of this, but the parallels to Michael Schiavo are undeniable. When I was eight years old my little sister Joan was barely three. She could talk but no one could understand her. I remember teasing the crap out of her just to see her reaction as she went to dad to tell him how badly I was treating her. His reaction? “What’s the matter, honey? I can’t understand you.” She would then come back to me and complain about my treatment of her. And, what did I do? I teased her some more. It was really funny...

Abercrombie and Fitch Thinks They’re Turning Japanese March 3, 2005 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- by John Phillips -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Clothing manufacturer Abercrombie and Fitch and entertainment giant Warner Brothers Studios have been known to use the same marketing techniques to sell their racy flicks and relaxed yet dressy wool sweaters: scantily clad models, the art of seduction and most recently a desire to “nip the nips.” In regard to the latter, Warner Brothers produced the 1944 cartoon Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips -- A&F allegedly refuses to hire or promote Asian Americans and other ethnic minorities. These charges were cemented in the minds of...

I am here this morning to inform you of the events of last night. A courier service delivered the official written interdict from the Archdiocese of St. Louis and its representative, Archbishop Raymond L. Burke. We ask that everyone respect the wishes of the board members and not contact them during this sensitive time. I will first read a statement, that some of you already have received, from the St. Stanislaus Six through their advisor. Afterwards, I will continue with a statement from the parishioners. Archbishop Raymond L. Burke has rejected the reasonable and generous offers of St. Stanislaus Kostka...

Carrying over from last year, I predict that Burst.com will beat Microsoft in their current lawsuit. But to avoid having to eat crow again over timing, let me put this in greater context. IF a trial actually takes place, as it is now scheduled to do this summer, Burst will easily win. Microsoft is at a disadvantage already as a bully. Burst will probably get Judge Motz to tell the jury that Microsoft deliberately destroyed evidence, and it doesn't hurt, either, that Burst is just plain right on all counts -- Microsoft DID violate their patents, DID violate Burst's non-disclosure...

(antiTainment) Fox News has asked a judge to allow them to fire the woman that sued talk show host Bill O'Reilly for sexual harassment and to declare that the firing not be classified as retribution. Andrea Mackris, is an associate producer for "The O'Reilly Factor" on the cable news network. Last Wednesday, the network and O'Reilly sued her and her attorney, Benedict Morelli, claiming that they had tried to extort $60 million in "hush money" from the controversial host in return for her dropping her harassment case. The 33-year-old Mackris filed the sexual harassment suit against O'Reilly the same day....

The newest ad takes Kerry's testimony out of context, editing what he said to distort the facts. He testified as a 27 year-old Vietnam veteran. He opposed a war that, at that point, cost...

Former California gubernatorial candidate Arianna Huffington is blasting the man who beat her last year, saying that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is "a bully" for calling Golden State Democrats "girlie men." "What we've seen in Arnold is an alternation of the seducer and the bully," Huffington told the New York Times. "Seduction worked for a while because he's a very charming man and the people were so relieved to be rid of [recalled Gov.] Gray Davis and have someone entertaining in his place." But Huffington warned, "When the seduction doesn't work anymore, the bully comes out. The expression 'girlie man' is...

Blogosphere 1, New York Times 0 In response to a fax sent by attorney Ronald D. This being The Times, however, things are never quite that simple. The Times legal department wrote: Thank you for responding to our complaint. By adding the bold-faced disclaimer at the top of the faux Columnist Corrections Page, you are no longer confusing readers and as...

<p>An outgoing deputy prime minister, Nebojsa Covic, said voters had punished the reformist government for failing to raise living standards.</p>
<p>"Living standards." There’s always an excuse for hatred, it seems: "We supported Hitler because the economy was bad," or "We didn’t oppose Stalin because he kept order." The behavior of many Serbians over the last decade sickens me. Remember the TV images of Serbian youth holding rock concerts in support of their soldiers’ genocidal activities in Kosovo? Just to set the record straight, I’ll once again remind people of the blood that some (not all) Serbians have on their hands.</p>

Maybe you’ve cruised past the church marquee in the middle of a sweltering summer afternoon that read: YOU THINK IT’S HOT HERE? For some reason, making light of such a heavy topic just doesn’t seem right to me — though of course I know what they’re trying to accomplish. Hell. It’s not a popular subject these days. No one wants to talk about it, much less go there. I have a friend who actually wrote a full-blown, hardback book on hell. Needless to say, it wasn’t a bestseller! Part of me wants to forget I ever heard the word. I...

"In the cities of Palestine, in its refugee camps, in its settlements and villages, its plains, its mountains, its groves of trees, and its coasts, over 70,000 martyrs and wounded have fallen defending the homeland's freedom and independence and the places holy to Islam and Christianity. They have blessing and glory. They are among the martyrs and the saints, who are the best friends [of the martyrs] who improve [the land] with their blood for the sake of independence and freedom and the establishment of the independent State of Palestine whose capital is Jerusalem, if Allah wills it, they will...

When Internet users log onto schoolscandals.com and click on the Beverly Hills High School link, they will find a message calling one student a "retard" who "deserves to go to hell." A posting in the Frost Middle School chat room describes a student as a "homosexual with a pigeon-like face and a penguin-like body." Such name-calling and gossip about students are common on the 3-year-old Web site, similar to the crude messages scribbled inside of school bathroom stalls for decades but on a much larger scale.

"Obviously, I would have been happier if Canada had not been conquered in the past by the English, if this part of North America had remained French, but you can't rewrite history." -- Jean Chretien ---- Le Monde, Dec. 1, 1994 Well, doesn't that give us some insight into the mind and machinations of one Prime Minister Jean Chretien. But, as we look at how Chretien has snubbed our American neighbours at a time when they need our support most, maybe Chretien is trying to rewrite history. Perhaps he's pretending he really is a man of some consequence in the...

1 April-Secretary-General Kofi Annan said today he hoped United Nations weapons inspectors would eventually return to Iraq, noting that their work had merely been suspended. Speaking to reporters upon arriving at UN Headquarters in New York, the Secretary-General said that if any weapons of mass destruction were to be found, the inspectors should go back to test them. "I hope the time will come when they will be able to do that," he added. Asked about what consequences it might have for the legitimacy of military action if such weapons are not found, the Secretary-General noted that, although the issue...

Respect is the cornerstone of student character building in Ridgefield’s elementary schools, and at Veterans Park Elementary the third-grade class is creating a poem to that tenet of character. The kids have been working with singer/peace educator Victoria Christgau. Christgau is this year’s artist-in-residence at the school, and the subject of respect fits nicely into her overall message of "tolerance, diversity and non-violence.” "It’s just essential to help children remember they can interact peacefully and with respect for one another,” Christgau said, "to teach them to respect themselves and listen to their own voice and articulate their feelings in a...

Halifax — A 16-year-old girl was sentenced Thursday to a year in youth jail for bullying another teen, who later committed suicide. Emmet Fralick, 14, shot himself at his Halifax home last April. The girl, who can't be identified, pleaded guilty to three charges in connection with Emmet's death during a court appearance Thursday. The charges included extortion, assault and a threat to cause bodily harm. The girl was also given one year of probation. During the court appearance, she also pleaded guilty...

Ethical Illiteracy in Public Education Many people today are dissatisfied with public schools and choosing alternative education systems for their kids. Homeschooling, private Christian and magnet schools are gaining students at an alarming rate and yet our schools continue to state that they are making great strides in improving our test scores. We read almost daily about people who are unable to choose the school with which they want to send their kids. Magnet schools are appealing to many because they offer a more diverse curriculum and seem to have better discipline policies. Christian schools have teachers that weave into...

BRANDON, Man. -- A 15-year-old who bullied another into giving up his skateboard, jacket and ball cap got muscled himself when he got to court. "I want that jacket of yours," Judge Krystyna Tarwid insisted as the teenager sat in the court witness box on Wednesday. "Take it off and give it to the clerk." "Why?" the teenager asked. "Because I'm telling you to and I can," Tarwid said. "It's called reverse psychology. I'm doing to you what you did to that individual." With some encouragement from an imposing sheriff's officer, the boy relented and gave it up. Tarwid ordered...

Amazing Dylan lyrics on Israel. Must read the entire lyrics. ___________________________ The Neighborhood Bully by Bob Dylan - 1983 Well, the neighborhood bully, he's just one man, His enemies say he's on their land. They got him outnumbered about a million to one, He got no place to escape to, no place to run. He's the neighborhood bully. The neighborhood bully just lives to survive, He's criticized and condemned for being alive. He's not supposed to fight back, he's supposed to have thick skin, He's supposed to lay down and die when his door is kicked in. He's the...

We ask who should win a controversial cybersquatting suit: the multinational car company or the small-town computer shop, Friday 5/3 at 7 p.m. Eastern on 'The Screen Savers.' By Dave Roos May 3, 2002 Web addresses are awkward enough as it is. First of all, there's the bizarre "http://" business, which is as forgettable as an international telephone number. Throw in the "www" and a whole slew of suffixes -- .com, .net, .org, .gov, .us, .ca, .info, .biz, with more on the way -- and you've got a recipe for total confusion. That's why we rely so heavily on simple...

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. -- A teenager was convicted yesterday of criminal harassment in a landmark case filed after one of her girlfriends committed suicide -- the first time the province has filed charges in a case centered on student bullying. A second girl was acquitted of uttering threats after an emotional trial in youth court attended by the mothers of 14-year-old victim Dawn-Marie Wesley and the two defendants. The girls are not identified by name because they are minors. "It's unfortunate that my daughter has to be in the middle of all this. I wish that my family, my community, my...
