With car thefts at an all-time high in Toronto, some people are resorting to installing retractable bollards in their driveways — vertical posts to physically prevent their vehicles from being stolen. According to the Toronto Police Service’s major crimes indicators dashboard, car thefts increased by 25.4 per cent in 2022. Insp. Paul Rinkoff described it as a “dramatic surge” in the city’s auto theft crisis over the past few years, with the number of vehicles stolen this year already skyrocketing. “When you compare 2020 to 2023, we saw an increase of 54 per cent in relation to auto theft,” he...

Someone in the news media finally asked the White House an uncomfortable question — no, not Jim Acosta, whose only question is, “Are we fake news, Mr. President,” said with a daring stare — and it came from “Fox & Friends” of all places. On President Trump’s favorite program Wednesday, co-hosts Ainsley Earhardt, Brian Kilmeade, and Steve Doocy confronted White House adviser Kellyanne Conway with the depressing truth that Trump, employing his legendary cut-throat negotiating skills, had just embarrassed himself in trying to get what amounted to pennies in border wall funding. “[P]eople who voted for him and want the...

Hundreds of new protective barriers will be permanently installed in Times Square and other locations around New York in an effort to block vehicles from hitting pedestrians after deadly attacks last year on crowds. The city is spending $50 million on protective measures including the installation of 1,500 metal barriers, or bollards, in key locations around the city, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Tuesday.

Occasionally, in the wake of a terror attack somewhere in the western world, I'll find myself in a TV studio where highly intelligent experts are arguing that this is why we need to hit Raqaa right now, or institute even more extreme vetting, or get better cooperation between our 473 police and intelligence and counter-terrorism agencies, or devote more resources to anti-extremism outreach programs, or install bollards up and down the land until every bollard is itself ring-fenced with bollards, which appears to be the plan Malcolm Turnbull is implementing in Australia, bollards upon bollards upon bollards... All of which...

The new concrete posts installed along two streets in Scott as a safety measure are the talk of the town, but much of it isn't positive. The posts, called bollards, were installed on Carothers and Finley avenues in the Glendale section of Scott to prevent wayward traffic from running into yards and structures. But the elongated shape and rounded top of the bollards has drawn some derision. "People are laughing at it. They're calling it Penis Road," Glendale resident Pat Martin told the township commissioners Tuesday. Scott manager Denise Fitzgerald said the recently installed bollards were approved by the state...
