Higher education reform will only come from the outside, probably from political reform. Or so we thought. Along came the coronavirus, also an outside force, that is upsetting the status quo in higher education. State universities are now preparing to cut budgets in the face of inevitable funding reductions from states and drops in student enrollment. The inevitability of cuts does not make reform inevitable, however. Left to their own devices, universities are likely to prioritize diversity over excellence and bureaucracy over faculty and student needs. Governors, state legislatures, and state boards of education should, as John M. Ellis argued...

The 2010 season is winding down and there are only four undefeated teams left going into the home stretch. The media is obviously hoping for a matchup between No. 1 Oregon and No. 2 Auburn, but are they really the two best teams? All four of these undefeated teams are in the top eight nationally in total offense. It is on the defensive side of the ball where the distinction lies. Oregon, TCU and Boise State are all in the top 20 in total defense. Boise State and TCU are in the top three. Auburn is ranked No. 51 in...

Six weeks into the college football season and one week before the first Bowl Championship Series standings are released, there are 13 unbeaten teams in all three polls. So who'd be the BCS' No. 1 if the standings came out today? Would it be consensus No. 1 Ohio State, the top team in The Associated Press, USA Today and Harris polls? Or maybe fellow unbeaten Oregon, ranked No. 2 and earning first-place votes in all three polls? According to the projection of ESPN's Brad Edwards, it's consensus No. 3 Boise State. According to the projections, the No. 1 Buckeyes would...

Tyler Stimson votes in the ESPNU poll) 1. Boise State (1-0) Beat Virginia Tech 33-30 in a thriller. Boise State has ice blood in their veins. Boise State now has a chance to do what no Non-AQ team has ever done before - go to the national championship game. They have the best QB in the country, and the most experience. 2. Alabama (1-0) Beat San Jose State 48-3. Defending national champion Alabama looked great - but anyone can look great against WAC cellar dwellers. 3. TCU (1-0) Beat Oregon State 30-21. TCU dominated Oregon State in total yardage (453-255),...

But the lasting image from this highly anticipated kickoff to the 2009 college football season may be Blount punching Boise State's Byron Hout after the final whistle and then needing to be restrained from fans by police on the field. As the Broncos began celebrating on their famous blue turf, Hout yelled in Blount's face and tapped him on the shoulder pad. That drew an immediate scream from Boise State head coach Chris Petersen, but before Petersen could pull Hout away, Blount landed a right hand to the defensive end's jaw. Then as Blount was being pulled off the field,...

Since his Jan. 1 proposal, Johnson said, he has received phone calls, letters and some personal threats from people who object to their marriage plans. Boise State wins 2007 Fiesta Bowl in OT against Big 12 Champs, Oklahoma. Amazing 4th and 18 touchdown from the fifty with a flea flicker with 7 seconds left. Amazing 4th down touchdown in OT followed by another amazing 2 point conversion to win against a very resilant and strong OU team which came back from 18 points down and took the lead with a minute and 6 minutes left in regulation. One of the most exciting and amazing College football games I have seen, next to the Miracle Bowl when BYU beat SMU 41 to 40 by scoring...

All of this was detailed in an Atlanta Journal-Constitution article last week and when Georgia fan Sam Hendrix read it online, he had an idea. "It hit me that he shouldn't have to bear the cost of...

But the NCAA rule book got in the way. Dan Miller, father of Broncos sophomore guard Tad Miller, is a retired police lieutenant who is training Iraqi police officers. When Sam Hendrix of Signal Mountain, Tenn. — "suthndawg" to his fellow Georgia fans on the Dawgvent, an Internet message board — read a story in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution about the Millers, he started an online movement...
