A police officer in San Marcos, Texas, was shot and killed Monday afternoon when he was serving a warrant, police said. Officer Ken Copeland, a veteran of the San Marcos Police Department since March 1998, was serving a warrant in the El Camino Real subdivison of the city when he was fatally shot, Police Chief Chase Stapp confirmed during a press conference Monday night. Copeland — who was wearing a protective vest — and other officers were shot at by the suspect, "much like in an ambush type of situation." He was taken to the Central Texas Medical Center immediately...

The House of Representatives will vote on national gun-carry reciprocity and gun background check fix bills this week. "It is my understanding they may be combined," the aide said. "Rules is meeting at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday. They have both. Floor vote should be Wednesday." The House Committee on Rules website shows the texts of the two bills combined as well as an amendment filed by Rep. Dina Titus (D., Nev.)...

The M30 Luftwaffe drilling (“triple”) was a survival weapon issued to Luftwaffe pilots during World War II. It was intended to be used in the event that a pilot was shot down, for defense and for hunting game to stay alive until rescue. For maximum versatility the M30 featured two 12 gauge shotgun barrels, and a 9.3x74mmR rifle barrel. They were manufactured by the German firm JP Sauer. If you’re wondering why the rifle looks similar to a hunting rifle. Drilling has been a tradition of high German hunting culture dating back to the 19th century. The drillings were not...

A recent experience shows how problems can occur with guns and estates.  I was involved in this. My involvement occurred 27 years ago. In 1990, an elderly relative wanted expert advice on obtaining a firearm. Her husband had recently died. She wanted to have a gun in the house, and wasn't comfortable with pistols. She was already frail and did not have much upper body strength. I recommended a .22 semi-auto, which she could keep handy. She could keep the chamber unloaded. It would be easy to charge and put into firing condition. The Brazilian copy of the Remington...

is usually pretty hard to definitively identify media bias. Often pressed for time, reporters are just unaware of opposing opinions or facts. And there is no way for readers to tell what information has been left out. But an Associated Press article, which appeared in hundreds of papers from the Los Angeles Times to the Houston Chronicle, provided a unique peek at how the media selectively picks anti-gun information in order to push for gun control. The Associated Press article edited-down a 441-word version of a longer, 1,000-word article that appeared in the Indianapolis Star and a quote from the...

“A community groups (sic) has a strong message for parents this Christmas,” Buffalo, NY’s reports. “They want to help keep toy guns out of children’s hands…to prevent them from getting their hands on a real one.” Ellipsis indeed. How does that work? . . . “Whatever you put in a child’s hands that’s what he feels comfortable with and you put a toy gun in his hands at an early age and when he gets older he’s going to want the real thing,” said Leonard Lane, president of Buffalo F.A.T.H.E.R.S organization. That’s why Lane is encouraging parents to give...

  • Will the GOP Leadership Be the Ones to Deliver Gun Control

If you were the GOP congressional leadership and WANTED to lose both the House and the Senate in 2018, how would you do it? I would suggest that there is no better way than to turn the GOP into the party that "finally delivered gun control." And this is after an eight-year stalemate under Barack Obama, when the anti-gun movement suffered one demoralizing defeat after another. Not anymore. Senator John Cornyn, the Senate's number two Republican, is doing the "happy dance" with his new friends and cosponsors Chuck Schumer, Dianne Feinstein, Richard Blumenthal, and Chris Murphy -- over their new...

Soldiers from the U.S. Army’s iconic 101st Airborne Division out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, were the first to field the new M17 pistol this week. The era of the Beretta-made M9 for Army leaders is over with the introduction of Sig Sauer’s new Modular Handgun System. A select group of soldiers tested M17s on Monday. Roughly 2,000 pistols were inventoried and inspected prior to the demonstration.

Semi-automatic rifles have been common in the hunting fields in the United States for a hundred and ten years and more.  I picked up the Remington model 8 above at a gun show in Tucson a few years ago. The design has been popular for a long time. The rifle pictured was manufactured early in 1907. It was called the Remington Autoloading Repeating Rifle at the time. The Model 8 designation was applied in 1911. The rifle pictured was one of the first chambered in the .30 Remington caliber, Remington's ballistic equal to Winchester's .30-30. Unfortunately, the Remington model...

They say history repeats itself. It certainly seems to in the firearms industry. Long ago, Bill Ruger supported magazine capacity limits. Back in 2000, Smith & Wesson threw in with the Clinton administration on expanding gun control. Much more recently, Springfield Armory and Rock River Arms…well…you probably know all about that. The latest gun maker that’s sure to to draw the ire of America’s gun owners: Accuracy International. AI head honcho, Tom Irwin, doesn’t like the idea that Americans can buy bump fire stocks. As the Evening Standard is reporting, The British maker of the most accurate sniper rifle in...

The reason: guns. The United Way succumbed to pressure from the national media, such as the LA times. New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence, a political non-profit formed in 2013, pushed the Global United Way Worldwide to stop the charity raffle. From New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence Co-President Miranda Viscoli sent a letter to United Way Worldwide alerting the organization about the firearm raffle that led to the suspension of the raffle. “Basically putting 104 firearms back into...

If you didn’t know hogs are all over the state of Texas. Over the last couple years, Ray Shinpaugh has been perfecting the art of feral hog eradication using a side-by-side, thermal monocular, shotgun, and laser to eliminate hogs with incredible efficiency. One strategy that he uses under the cover of darkness is that him and his hunting partner use thermal optics to locate groups of feral hogs. With the lights off, they position themselves between the pigs and any nearby cover. Once in position, they flip on the lights and drive the pigs further out in the open where...

HE’S known for playing unflappable cops and cowboys with poker faces and steely glares. But after a prop he used in a 1968 war movie was handed in nearly 50 years later during a weapons amnesty, perhaps even Clint Eastwood will raise an eyebrow in surprise. The sub-machine gun wielded by the US star in Where Eagles Dare was taken to Bridgwater police station in Somerset by a former film worker. Officers confirmed it is not a functioning weapon, although it could pose a risk in the wrong hands as imitation firearms have been used in robberies. The link...
  • Medical Marijuana rules being used to confiscate guns in Hawaii

While 29 states have legalized medical marijuana in some form, the drug is still illegal under federal law. Some police departments are now selectively enforcing federal law — people can get the medical marijuana, they just can’t own guns. Hawaii requires all medical marijuana users to register in a state-run patient registry and also requires gun owners to register all their weapons with the county police chief.
